4/3/17:

Slow many 50% swings with a 7i. Focusing on positions more than anything, thinking in-line impact, and getting my weight over to the left side.

3/4/17 - Had a hybrid and wedge fitting. The Edel wedge fitting alone amounts to some of the best and most useful practice that I've ever done and can't wait to get them!

Currently focusing on: Key 4 - shorter backswing.

April 3, 2017

Busy day and rainy day. Practiced swing-to-top for 5 minutes - without club - using the reflection in the glass of my office door as a mirror. Can feel myself start to lose balance if I over-swing.

Focus, connect and follow through!

20 min

sklz swing trainer, 7 iron and driver

stop at top, pump, step thru and swings

3/3 alt 7i and driver sets

working slower to keep form. Watching to see when I get tired, what changes

i believe that as I went for more power and/or got tired on Sunday, my shoulder started moving and I was chopping across the ball to produce a slice

at the very least, I have to learn to swing with an emphasis on form rather than effort because I don't get more distance when I swing harder

4/3:  45 mins. total
15 mins. loosen-up/conditioning drills w/OW & Momentus (turn; hinge/release; full swings)(focus on consistency in balance)
20 mins. full swings w/foam balls (focus on keeping lag into A7; launch direction slight push)--using tour striker pro iron
10 mins. fatigued form-keeper drills (2x20 reps full swings w/OW, no balance loss on any rep)

Looking forward to a range session + playing tomorrow; hoping to see payoff in consistency of ball-striking, and from putting work.

4/4/17:

Practiced some. 1/2 wedges with limited flight balls in the yard for about 10 minutes this morning. Frankly, I'm not good at half wedges so I felt I needed some practice, so I brought my hula hoop out, and tried to land the limited flight balls inside the hula hoop.

April 4 - Mirror work using a club holding the head end to keep it light and take stress off my elbow. Focused on turning shoulders and hips from the top and keeping the wedge with my right elbow. All this to have my hips more open at impact.

Right now in the north of Boston area, indoor practice is all I have.  Recent snowfall killed any chance of courses opening in the area this week.  I work on proper hand positioning and sequencing through the swing.  I really need to start scratching some tickets to get an indoor sim...

20 min

sklz swing trainer, driver and 7 iron

stop at top, pump, step thru and full swings

3/3 alt 7 iron and driver

tried reverse order and noticed more control on driver swings. Maybe less influenced by 7 iron or just less tired

worked on lagging club on swing thru and finishing all the way w/o losing balance

no golf this weekend and travel next week

4/4: 10 minutes with metronome app and focus on tempo. Just slow to medium, ~three-quarter swings, starting balls to the right of my target line. I'm working on feeling a smooth tempo, weight shift, and a bit shorter swing. Hoping I can fall back on this when my nerves get going Friday (first tournament :-D).

4th April:- 15 Mins again spent on the full swing, outdoors with no ball. Still finding what 'feel' gives the correct picture for the take-away up to A2. Strangely enough, at present it is the thought that the right forearm "pulls" the straight left arm and club back along the target line. Right elbow stays close to right hip.

    • Hitting some good shots on my golf trip. It's good I can tell when I hit better shots the way I want to swing the ball versus when I use an older swing. Shockingly, the short game has been at worst, not harmful to my game. I am using similar feels to the full swing, in that I try to get my hands down. I've been nipping the ball clean off the turf.
    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!

    • Day 539, April 23, 2024 Mirror work once again. When I get back to swings, I'll just do it A. LOT.
    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?
