Should I be playing or practicing less? Last year was almost twice as much plus 50 hours a week working for about two years. I was constantly sore over my entire body. . .but again nothing debilitating.

If you are just sore, you're probably OK. Again, the doctor said that "people who cross these thresholds" increase their chance of being injured - he didn't say all would be injured.

I can't think of the last time that I heard of a top golfer (who would receive press coverage) hurting themselves while golfing and being unable to play as a result.

An aggravating factor for golf injury can be the X-Factor swing which has become increasingly popular the past two decades. Keeping the hips fairly still while super-rotating the shoulders can give extra power, but also put extra strain on the back. I found an article last year about X-factor swings and back problems among 30-something tour pros, but was unable to find it for today. More later (I hope ;-)).

I'm intrigued by the idea and would love to try my own version of it someday. I would scale it back quite a bit even if I had the time and resources. I want golf to always feel like it's fun and not a job.

Agree 100%.  A couple years ago, I put a ton of effort into my game (multiple rounds and range sessions per week).  I got down to a 7 index, but started not enjoying the game as much (got too serious, not enough fun).

It will be interesting to see what level this guy gets to, considering he appears to have the resources and an already decent game.  And interesting to see if he sticks with the aggressive time commitment.

Yes, I agree. Golf should be fun and not work on top of work. . .

Been there, and really started getting tired of golf. Almost sick of it.

I know people who can play every single day, and don't seem to get tired of it. For me, I just couldn't do it, even when I was still improving. There's just a point where it's no longer fun. I know this is kind of heresy on a golf forum, but really.

I think this guy really loves golf. It does take that kind of love for improvement in this game to stick with it long enough to get to scratch or better.

In addition to a high swing speed and talent, you've got to be passionate enough about it to dedicate 7 hours a day to it.

Block #2 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Play 18 holes.

This will be a pretty straightforward block. I will play 18 holes and use the Arccos 360 tracking system to track the whole round. The system allows me to identify weaknesses during the round and shows my handicaps in driving, approach, chipping, sand, and putting for that specific round. That information will be used in the third practice block.

Block #3 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Learn from the round.

I will use the above mentioned Arccos 360 handicap values and choose the highest two to work on during the final block. The first two hours will go to the highest handicap value and the next highest will be used for the last two hours available to me for that day.

From the site. (by the way- nicely organized and thorough)

I'd quibble with this methodology: play a round basically every day. Then use the Arccos analysis of THAT round to work on the area that the product says you lost the most strokes.

I find that to be a bit arbitrary. You're relying on a product which may or not be any good at identifying a weak area. It's probably ok, at best. But it could have bizarre results like "your putting from 15-25ft showed weakness today," so off you go to spend 2 hours on 15-25ft putts.

I'd suggest that he map out for the year a plan for improvement, using his own knowledge and judgment- tweaking it based on his on-course results.  If an area pops up as being consistently a problem, then adjust your overall plan, but I wouldn't recommend basing a long-term practice methodology based on the day's anecdotal results.

It already seems like a better idea than the Dan Plan, but he needs to switch around those practice ratios fast. 50% on putting! That's way too much.

In other words, I want to send this thread to him:

Too much play, not enough practice, and the practice ratios are really, really far out of whack.

Play is, what, hitting 80 different kinds of shots in 80 different situations over four hours? Hardly a great way to improve efficiently.

Cool that you read through his site! I hope something can materialize between this site and him. . . :-)

The part you wrote about "For many, it is." is quite true and interesting. I really think that part of the talent thing is being enthusiastic about Golf in addition to having the native ability.

Yeah, but your comprehension is pretty darn good. Your skimming might be other peoples heavy read.

Has he provided footage of his swing?  Quick look at the site showed nada.

My prediction is same as it was for Dan...burnout/fail.

I bought a membership to a very nice course with money i've been saving up and i plan to do something similar over summer. My membership includes instruction so i'll be working with an instructor every day, but not 7hr/day that seems like it would overwhelm me quickly. Maybe toward the end of summer ill work for 5+ hours but right now it'll be a refreshing break to just hit ballad for 2 hours a day working on my game then playing golf. I worked hard for my grades this semester and i saved the money so i feel i earned it!

    • On my car I got the extended power train warranty. I do read the fine print most of the time. Though at now 37, my eyes aren’t what they were 10 years ago.    The problem with most of these extended warranties on electronics and appliances is you don’t register the warranty with the place you buy the warranty from, which I’ve always found strange. Unless it’s GameStop then you know Alina drops her Switch in the next two years and the screen cracks they’ll replace it. No questions asked.    You buy a slow cooker at Walmart for $50 and the extended warranty is say $6, you have to go through a third party to register your product for the warranty, and it’s pretty damn annoying. Target is the same way. Anything you buy the extended protection on you have to go through a third party.    Why do retailers go through a “broker” for warranties? Because they don’t wanna deal with it? They make me talk to someone from another country, that I can barely understand, when I need my warranty fulfilled.   Sorry for the rant.
    • You may be able to find a regular flex Blueboard on the second hand market. I’m little more than half your age so I swing a shaft that launches pretty low so I don’t have a lot of experience with Regular flex (other than when I try to hit it I miss way to the left).    There are other shafts, such as the newer Ping Alta that I’ve heard good things about. And one that no one talks about. The Jupiter shaft. You can get this shaft for a $100 with a grip and your Ping adapter installed. I was talking to the golf manager at Dick’s Sporting Goods here and he has one in his driver and has nothing but good things to say about it. I thought about getting one for my Paradym Triple Diamond to play it a little shorter, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

    • Meanwhile, another old Tour Edge guy switches to Callaway for this season. I have a different problem, course dependent set-ups. What I’m wondering is if @dragonsmhas the 8 iron set 5-PW, AW, GW or just 5-PW, GW. Because the PW is 42°, AW 47°, and GW 52°. Because that could potentially be a gap there. The 5-iron to 6-iron length jump is 5/8” instead of 1/2” so you should be careful of that.    @WUTiger the problem most people have with 3-woods is they don’t play them far enough back into their stance. And they usually don’t have enough loft and the shaft is too long. So 3HL, 4 or 5-wood is probably better for most golfers. I do the “Frankenwood” approach. I have both the 3+ and 5 woods. I typically will either add two degrees to the 3+ on 6600 yards or longer courses, or take a degree off the 5-wood on shorter courses than 6300 or so, and use the 5-wood shaft for both. I don’t usually find a situation where I need both the 3 and 5 wood on a course. I don’t play from 7000 yards it’s no fun. Edit: I mostly agree with @WUTiger on the gapping, although a lot of the newer even fixed hosel fairway woods are made better than what we had when we were playing the old Exotics XRails.
