Who do you think are the top five one-hit wonders (major winners, that is)?

Andy North backed his way into two, so he's immune. But Ben Curtis, why, he's out there. How about some others? Who would you rank as your top five, going back as far as you'd like... (well, not really much before 1900).

Think. Answer. See if the folks on your list make our list this Saturday...

I'm just going off the top of my head here...

1. Phil Mickelson :)
2. Shawn Micheel
3. Rich Beem
4. David Duval
5. Ian Baker-Finch - he won the Open right?

Yep, Ian Baker Finch is definitely up there. Also, thrown in Paul Lawrie, winner of the 1999 British Open. I don't believe he has done much since. I wouldn't even say that he really won that British Open, Jean Van de Velde lost it. :/

I'll try to think of some more..

Here is a quick list of some one hitters since 1970. Some were very respectable on the tour.

John Mahaffey 78 PGA
Bill Rogers 81 Open
Hubert Green 85 PGA
Bob Tway 86 PGA
Larry Mize 87 Masters
Scott Simpson 87 US Open
Jeff Sluman 88 PGA
Wayne Grady 90 PGA
Baker-Finch 91 Open
Steve Jones 96 US Open
Mark Brooks 96 PGA
Paul Lawrie 99 Open

This is my top 5 since 1970

5. Ben Curtis
4. Baker-Finch
3. Paul Lawrie
2. Bill Rogers
1. Mark Brooks

Here is a great site.

From Don, who said he couldn't post (crazy old coot! )

Mark Brooks (1996 PGA)
Todd Hamilton (too soon to tell, but has the potential)
Rich Beem
Ben Curtis

How about players who have only won one major despite being very talented? Like:
Fred Couples
Davis Love III
Tom Lehman
Tom Kite
Steve Elkington
Justin Leonard (though he still has plenty of time)

Older one-hit wonders:
Charles Coody
Orville Moody (I believe his Masters was his only PGA Tour win, making him the king of this category)
Tommy Aaron
Jack Fleck
Ken Venturi

BTW, I changed things up a bit. This week I'm going to do best players to have won only one major, and next week i'll do worst players to have won one major. Kinda lets me pick on both orville moody and Phil Mickelson.

A quick glance gives me this top 3: Mickelson Love III Weiskopf

A quick glance gives me this top 3:

I

went with 5. Tom Kite 4. Tom Lehman 3. Fred Couples 2. Davis Love III 1. Phil Mickelson I really don't consider Tom Weiskopf a "current" player, and I stuck with somewhat current players in making the list.

I

Nice article. I understand about Weiskopf. He was one of those players I watched growing up. If Nicklaus couldn't win, I wanted Tom. He had a beautiful swing but couldn't handle the mind game.
