Reading these replies, I'm starting to do that laugh that slowly turns into a depressed crying fit.  I don't think there was an option to let them sit out this year.  The conversation literally went like this

Me: "Hey, me and the guys were thinking of traveling to Orlando for a nice round of golf on..."

Her: "AWESOME!  I'll call the wives and make sure we get babysitters for the kids!  We'll let you guys play by yourselves though"

Me Later:  "Hey John, sorry my wife really ran with that one"

You'll learn "grasshopper," though I'm guessing you're way too young to get the reference...

"Quickly as you cansnatch the pebble from my hand."

At least leave it to the wives to entertain themselves. If THEY want to go, THEY can figure out what to do with themselves. You might want to play 36-holes a day, so this doesn't happen again next year for you and your buddies. Or maybe all eight of you will have a great time.

You are thinking like a guy here, when women get together, time is no longer relevant.  A spa day will be a full day, you won't need to worry.

My recommendation to you would be to put a schedule together, so everyone is on the same page, that way you will be able to carve out the time you need for golf and let the wife know when she needs to self entertain.

7AM group breakfast

8:30 - 4:30 men are golfing (2 rounds per day right??)

6:00PM group dinner

etc. etc. etc.

Why is it that everyone feels the need to tiptoe around their wife's feelings these days? You simply say that you are going on guys golf trip and they can plan whatever they like on their own.

Might not be so bad, especially if your definition of golf buddy trip is golf, not going out to strip clubs. Our golf trips are 2 rounds a day, walking, every day. By the time we're done, we're pretty beat. We have a few beers, eat, play a few rounds of poker, and are generally unconscious by about 10 PM. Giving up the poker, and including wives at dinner wouldn't be a big deal.

We're playing (and staying at) the Waldorf Astoria in Orlando.  It's our first trip so we decided not to go too far from home - 3 of us live in Jacksonville.

Yeah, it would have been much easier if they were willing to play.  All of our wives have played golf with us before but none of them seemed interested.

Lol at MacDutch!

Honestly, I just did a trip in Orlando and am from Tampa. This was my 3rd Orlando golf trip Of the 6 rounds we played Waldorf was the most expensive and least thrilling. If you can change your itinerary just let me know and I can steer you in the right direction. Waldorf was $175 a round, and beers were so expensive I vowed to just stay sober.

Thanks for the replies everyone.  Seems like the consensus view is to let them know that buddy golf is the priority of this trip and that they're responsible for their own entertainment if they want to come.

If there is any good that can come of this I would say, play two rounds a day. Then when the wives see how beat you are and that you just want to go to bed early they will understand that your golf trips really are about playing golf.

My wife hated my poker playing because I could be out all night. She would get worried I was up to no good when really I was at the tables playing. Golf is easier for her to understand and accept.  She knows that if I have a mistress, it's golf, and I can't afford, nor have time for another one.

Hopefully after this trip concludes the ladies will understand that a buddies golf trip doesn't leave much room for nightlife and whatnot and they will be satisfied letting you go on your own.

Wife's don't understand that a round can take 5hrs and the after round hanging and talking about it, is just as fun.

It actually sucks to leave the course and jump right in to a wife activity without hanging with the boys after the round, you feel like it is an schedule you have to follow.

Be it as it may be..the only thing i know can keep a wife entertain for hours is shopping, so good luck with that. The Spa thing and a little buzz is great but I do a agree that is not enough.

If I was you, I would schedule the tee time as early as possible. Wifes on trips don't mind sleeping in..by the time they are ready for brunch is 12 noon, and you are back.

Thanks for that tip. I personally don't know anything about the course. One of my friends got us rounds for $80 a pop but I think it's because the trip is in July so we must be getting the dehydration discount.

We're definitely open to switching courses. Are there any you could recommend?

This is all very sage advice right here ^^^^

Definitely turn off your phone when you're playing too..

How long are you going to be here?

I always recommend the 2 courses at Orange County National.  As an added bonus, they have a small lodge you can stay at, a nice little par-3 course, and a decent bar and restaurant.  There's a huge lit putting complex right outside the rooms, for a little after hours putting competition too.

Nothing but golf though, so if the ladies come, they're gonna be driving a bit to find any fun.  BUT, if they're worried about extracurricular shenanigans on your part if you go alone, they'd probably like to hear that it's nothing but golf and a cold beer or 3, and no one needs to get in a car until it's time to drive home! :-)

Orange County is good. A bit south, but Southern Pines is really good. Celebration is a fun track. Champions Gate International is a good course.

Yeah, a wife takeover of a golf trip is not a compromise :-P

So my question is what do wives normally do on trips like this?  We were thinking of booking massages and pedicures but that's like 2.5 hours max.  Maybe that's enough considering our tee times will be early and the massages will likely start later in the morning but we're not sure.   How have you guys entertained the non-golf playing spouses on golf trips?

Find a wife that has interests beyond pedicures and massages would be my response.

But...you may find that the women are more than capable of organising themselves for a few days. One would hope so. :-)

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Last year my wife (non-golfer) wanted to go on a trip to Gaylord, MI.   We agreed the women could go.  They headed to the beach for the afternoon.    We met up after the round and had dinner together.   The problem....the next day, she was ready to come home and we had another full day of golf...

I also went to Treetop without the wives and we had a much better time.    I love my wife but golf is golf and unless the spouse is a golfer, leave them home!

Leave them home!

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
