Jordan Spieth is as big of head case as I am.

I would not compare myself in golf talent but I see some amateur tendencies in his golf game. Things like double misses with the driver and poor conversion on 5 foot putts. Lack of confidence and inability to "right the ship" during the round compared to other great golfers seems to more glaring. Maybe it's just me or the fact that he is constant covered. Any one else want to weigh in?

I don't follow the tour (or at least specific players) with a ton of regularity, so take my thought with a grain of salt.  The only thing I've recently noticed with Spieth that is different compared to lots of other great players is the blow-up holes he's had.  They all go through regular ups-and-downs, but I can't recall seeing too many players having singular, round/tournament killing holes like he's had in the recent past.

I can't begin to imagine what it's like with this era of social media, too...but I'm glad it wasn't around when I was in college O:).

That is exactly what I am talking about, Bill. Yeah players have the occasional "blow up hole" but he has had quite a few of them, which is why I say it is similar to my game and not like most other top tier players.

Ahh gotcha, and right there with you as my regular 4-some's season leader in sideways punchouts.

Wish I could speak more to Spieth's current stretch, but just haven't followed him enough to offer a more thoughtful opinion.  Confidence is a crazy beast...he'll get it back.

He seems to be very twitchy too at the tee and when he is setting up for shots.

It is tough when a golfer struggles with their full golf swing. Though I think he was pretty high up in strokes gained from tee to green earlier in the season.

Especially when he is contention. I hate watching him golf when he's in contention. He'll back off the ball a number of times.

He's still young too thou,is it a case of just needing to mature a bit.and get a bit more experience.(how old is he exactly i know his early 20s?)

I know he's not the same type of players but i seem to remember sergio garcia having a lot of blow up holes when he was younger, and losing his temper a lot more over it.and he seems to have matured into a much more composed player these days.

That said ild take Jordan's game over mine in a heartbeat :-D

The dude has won 2 majors with glaringly less talent than the other top players....I don't think that happens to a head case.

People tend to think otherwise at times because he wears his emotions on his sleeve so vividly, but Spieth's mental game is still more of an asset than anything else for him IMO. With his relatively limited talent, you don't accomplish things that only Jack, Tiger, and Seve have done if you're truly a head case. Reality vs. perception difference here.

I suppose age could be the factor. It does seem like the younger unmarried guys tend to be erratic in the sense of consistent play. They are still pro level obviously.

In one year you can. The feather in Tiger and Jack's hat is that they held it together year after year. Jordan rode a wave of amazing golf and a feeling of "I can't do anything wrong." Now he's dropping off and missing cuts. Something Tiger and Jack didn't do in their prime. The headcase part is where his game is at. It's like watching a guy grind for par for the whole 18 holes.

Sometimes, it takes a guy a couple of years to find his game again after winning one or more majors. After a major win, I've heard they go on so many paid exhibitions and travel so much doing so that it wears them out, and can affect their swing.

But Jordan's worked on his swing over the last year; and it could be he needs another set of eyes, or a consultant to assist his instructor.

We'll agree to disagree. The jury is still a long ways out on Spieth IMO, he potentially has another 20+ years of his career left.

My $0.02 is just that there is a difference between being a head case and wearing emotions on your sleeve. The two can be mutually exclusive and I'm sure there are plenty of stoic appearing golfers out on tour who are very much head cases inside...we just don't see it.

This has nothing to do with the on course rhetoric, it has to do with the botched holes, short putt percentages and inability to corral his drives on a frequent basis.

I like him as a player but he is frustrating to watch at times.

By that criteria, Tiger from 2013-today and Phil are also head cases. Many great players battle two way misses and blow up holes at certain times in their careers.

Some of his nervous ticks and fidgetiness might support your argument but the above does not.

He's 23 years old, has won 9 times on the PGA Tour in his 4 years on tour, including 2 Majors and a FedEx Cup.  He was previously the number 1 ranked player in the world, and is currently 7th.

I've got to ask, by what measure is he "glaringly less talented than other top players"?

I like Jordan for his game and spirit. T2 last weekend and now 6th owgr, thats not nutcase material.

The blowups and meltdowns are part of golf. Even the best players can't keep clean of them

I don't know. Cut, then T11, 4th, cut, cut, then T2. If he gets cut next week or two, I'll stand by my statement. I like Jordan and he is fun to watch and frustrating at the same time.

I was saying this as a compliment to his mental game, not an insult in any way.

Just based on the eye test, I think most folks who watch him play recognize that he has less God given talent than the likes of Rory, Day, or DJ...

The kid is a straight up gamer and knows how to win.

    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.
