In golf we are just standing there.  I file this topic either in the round section or under misc irrelevant.

 

You have just brought up one of the great myths in Deep Breathing. Many people believe that the body must be moved vigorously in order to force the oxygen into the system to create deep breath and that is why we exercise.

We do not have to move the body vigorously, but instead just practice deep breathing. As we condition the body to get used to deep breathing over time, it responds and we breath deeply all the time, not just when we exercise.  I use slow controlled Yoga moves to build strength, mobility, and balance while at the same time using very deep breaths. My resting heart rate is 38-40 and I have not exercised in the traditional sense for many years, although I have now started swimming. Of course I have developed this over years, but non the less it works.

I found this video where the breath is used in Karate in a similar way to tennis as mentioned on youtube go to youtube and search

Here is a GolfRX clip from Mark Williamson, the golf yogi, on how to improve breathing for the golf swing. Mark played professional golf from 2002-2007.

Mark has longer YouTube clips on golf and yoga in various online links.

A couple of years ago, one of the young PGA tour pros (can't remember who) said that he had done conditioning workouts with Manny. During the workouts, Manny told golf pro that proper breathing was important in boxing and throwing punches, and suggested that managing breathing would help one's golf swing. The golf pro started focusing more on breathing properly during his swing.

Key idea from many sports: Don't hold your breath during tense moments, it just makes you jumpy.

Good observation. In 1970 a guy by the name of Herbert Benson wrote a book called the Relaxation Response. In it he studies "Fight or Flight " the reaction when confronted with a frightening situation, the body prepares itself to either fight the threat or run from it. The muscles tighten and breath is short. The problem is our bodies do not know the difference between a real threat and a perceived one, so if that 3 ft birdie put is perceived as a threat, we go into fight or flight.

    • Got my schedule mostly figured out.  I'm in for both days.
    • I played a round at the course I am trying to get par on every hole, on Thursday. On a par 5 I have yet to par, dog leg left with a cart path and tree's on the left at the bend and a sand trap right in the middle of the fairway at the bend where you're most likely to hit the ball. I managed to get great contact with the ball off the tee, knocked it well over the tree's/cart path and into the fairway leaving me with around 200 yards to the green on my second shot. 3w shot landed the second shot just outside the green about 80 yards to the pin. 3rd shot landed the ball about 10 feet from the pin on the green. Now putting for birdie, I miss the edge of the hole by about half an inch and the ball rolls past 2 feet. Now putting for par, I putt nice and soft and the ball lips out hahaha. Bogey   
    • I think Scottie isn't as enjoyable to watch play golf is because he doesn't have the "flashy" game. He doesn't take on more than he can handle. His misses are always way less most other golfers. He's just the ultimate steady golfer, but his floor is like stupidly high.  Let's say Scottie was in Rory's position on Hole 15 on Sunday at Augusta this year. Is Scottie even attempting that sweeping draw around the tree? I don't, I think Scottie blasts it into the bunker right of the green and tries to get up and down.  Rory is more fun to watch because of the highs and lows to his game. It's like, ah man he can crash and burn here or hit it to like an amazing shot.  Tiger, we just didn't know what we had in the moment. His floor was so high that we were just like, this is awesome. Then he hit an amazing shot and it left us speechless.  As for Rahm, I get why people have issue with him. I like his game. I like his attitude on the course. The passion is 100% and I a respect that even if he gets hot headed. I rather have human beings on the course playing golf, and that means they are fallible.  I appreciate Scotties' game a lot. If you sit back and just think about how he plays it's really impressive. 
    • Played a round yesterday, went up and down from greenside on a Par 5 and dropped a 40-ft putt from off the green on a Par 4.
    • Oh jeez.. it's not like rooting for someone to fail life or anything.
