I read a story on another topic about how a guy bought a rangefinder and, being old school, deemed this "selling out."

So, I thought it would be a good topic. What sort of changes to your swing / clubs / balls / etc. have made you feel like you've sold off a part of your golfing soul?

It could be buying a set of game-improvement clubs, replacing your 5-iron with a hybrid, buying a push-cart (or selling it in favor of riding in a cart), aiming 40 yards left to accommodate for the slice you've given up on fixing… or a million things I haven't mentioned here.

What has made you feel that you've sold out a little?

This year I've gone all-in on the push cart lifestyle. My back thanks me. And you know, I really don't think it looks goofy anymore.

Now you kids better get off my lawn!

I don't think a push cart is selling out. I started using one this year as well.

I can't think of anything I'd consider "selling out." Guess I'm punk rock like that. :-P

Somewhere along the way I went form carrying a one iron to my longest iron being a six. So I guess carrying a 3, 4 & 5 hybrid is the sell out. Or I'm old. Or both.

When I first joined TST, I carried a 3i. It got mainly used as a driving iron on tight holes.

Finally, I swapped it out for a 4 Hybrid.  I felt slightly less a golfer for the first few months. :~( It was kind of like in 1994 when I bought a new iron set without a 2i !

But, the 4H proved more reliable than a 3i, and more versatile (it also can be used for chipping on moon-crater greenside lies).

I really embraced hybrids, however, once I swapped the Adams 4H for the FlyZ 4H with a slightly heavier shaft. It bridges the 19* FW and the irons nicely. And, it's a welcome tee-off tool on hellish, super-tight par 4s. :-D

Focus, connect and follow through!

Everyone's gonna have their own points at which they've sold out. For some it might be using steel shafted clubs. ;-)

Thought provoking question, thanks. I look forward to others responses.

This year our senior golf club asked the membership which set of tees each of us felt most comfortable playing. The choices were 6,300-6,400, 5,900-6,100 and 5,500 or so. For the past 10 years I have played the A Flight at the longer tees with reasonable success.  Depending on the course, weather, etc...at times recently I have felt over matched.

So I responded that the 5,900-6,100 was my preference. Now I am playing the shorter tees and feeling a bit like a sell out.

I'll go with getting a push cart. Im not carrying the bag.

I have both 4i and 4H. Rarely use 4H. Will feel like a sell out when I go to the 4H full time. Nothing yet though. All heart and soul so far.

I don't think of anything in golf as a sell out.   If it helps me or is more convenient, I'm all for it.   I have hybrids, play the appropriate tees and sometimes the forward tees and when I walk, I have a cart.

I honestly don't know why I waited so long. I'm so much fresher by the end of the round now, my back doesn't ache, and I don't have to constantly pick it up and put it down.

Probably the only thing that has ever made me feel this way is just not playing the back tees sometimes, when they are not that long to begin with.

I remember very clearly having this feeling about using my first Titanium driver. It was ENORMOUSLY larger than my previous driver and it felt like cheating.

Interestingly since that point there haven't been many times I felt this way. Kinda with the Pro V1 when it first came out it also felt like a big technology jump.

Haha I sold out the day I started playing golf. I was 25 years old, spring of 2008. I was hooked right away, and I've been a proud sell out ever since.

I sold my stand bag and bought a cart bag...basically admitting I'm never going to carry my clubs (I do walk whenever possible, but use a push-cart).

Cuz they're not cool.

Or so my college kids say… until they have to play four rounds in four days with them. ;-)

    • Day 12: Same as last couple days, but focus was on recentering aspect of flow. When I recenter earlier I make decent contact most swings but if I recenter late or not at all it’s a roll of the dice.
    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
