Hey guys, relatively new to the site, but I've been reading this thread (big GSW fan, so obviously I love what Curry's done in this event so far). Apart from what this is doing for golf's exposure - Curry being a megastar at the moment - I was also thinking about the impact this could have on Under Armour's status in the golf retail/equipment kingdom. A few days ago on the first, UA reported their shares fell (though less than expected), but they saw growth within their golf sector. We can pretty much attribute this to Spieth's recent hot streak (man, can UA pick their guys or what..) but I'm thinking if this "Curry experiment" keeps attracting eyes/clicks/interest (and Spieth stays hot), UA could be in line for a big push to challenge the top dogs for apparel/shoes/etc. What do you guys think? Any chance UA can get up there more so than they already are? Or do they need more legitimate tour players under contract like Spieth?

Not a chance.  UA has already said they have no interest in making clubs.  The equipment industry is brutally competitive and dominated by 2 names, Callaway and Taylormade.  Nike is one of the largest companies on the planet that said enough was enough after spending 20 years making equipment to earn, I think they said about a 3% market share.  Assuming thats what you might be implying.  As far as signing more players, lol of course they'll look to sign more but I think they carefully pick and choose who they kinda sign.  As far as challening Nike in golf, I doubt it

Yes -  essentially 8 over par after 27 holes on a relatively easy  course with 4 guys shooting 62 in round 2. And it looks like the average score in round two for the top 25 is about 66. Yet.....his experience in the NBA is going to help him succeed as a pro golfer, according to some. :hmm:

It would be nice if it could be treated as the novelty it is and be left at that. Good on him, I say. He had more to lose than gain and he has probably exceeded the expectations of many. But the idea that he is anything other than a very good club golfer is preposterous. Kenny G is used to performing in front of crowds too.

Dude, there's been like ONE comment about how he could maybe hang if he retired and dedicated himself to golf full-time.

Seriously like one comment. :-P

The comment you quoted was about how he was beating a whopping THREE players only.

Looks like he finished really strong today.  +4 through 8 holes and then even par over the last 10 for another 74.  Good for T148 and ahead of 4 players that completed all 36 holes.

Pretty impressive, all things considered.

He's got to be pleased with that, even though he missed the cut by 11 strokes.

For a non-professional golfer making his first ever appearance in a professional tournament, I'd say its VERY impressive.  There are pro golfers who are worlds better than Curry out there that probably can't even get on the web tour.

Well, to be honest, he didn't "get on" the tour either.   ;-)

I hope he plays well but if he shoots anything in the 70's I'd be impressed. Not because of nerves but because of his skill level, he's counting every shot and the course can be tricky. The course plays fairly easy for the pros but there is some trouble if you're offline.

I'm impressed!

I think most people understand that what he did is impressive. The people that has something negative to say is a) don't like him for few reason or b) think anyone that doesn't do golf full time should not compete Aka other athletes

For the record there were 5 sponsor exemptions for the Ellie Mae Classic - 4 of the players missed the cut, and one - Martin Trainer, shot 65 66 and is T9 heading into the weekend.

Players play, tough players win!

Yes that is great to see, Martin plays there a lot. Got to play with him about a month ago, he's got game.

Only just seen this but count me in the 'pretty cool' group. Can't be bad for the Web.com tour to get more exposure and great to see him do about as well as he possibly could!

Currently focusing on: Key 4 - shorter backswing.

Its almost sad how littered golf is as a sport with players who are just out of this world good and yet can't making a living playing it because the top players who do are just on yet another level.

The fact that there are players that "are just on yet another level" tells us that the others aren't "out of this world good".

In golf, as with many other sports and endeavors, the definition of "really good" is relative to the skill level of the person making the observation.

On the other hand, it's possible that many players on the  web.com and other tours are good enough for and would do fine on the pga tour.  There are only so many spots available so you just have to be lucky enough to make it through the bottleneck, have the right rounds at the right time, etc.  The top ten or twenty in world however, I imagine are going to be there no matter what.

So can it be said he's the best golfer among those active in another professional sport who tried golf?

I don't know how you could quantify that.  He's good, but there are plenty out there just as good...

Just a few examples from 2 weeks ago.

    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
