Hi Everyone,

I am a new member to TST and after reading a few posts the responses have been great so hopefully I can get a good bit of feedback too.

I have been playing golf about a year and now currently work as a Greenskeeper at a Course in Reading. To join our club the fees are fairly high plus the monthly payments are well in excess off £100. All the clubs of a decent standard around the area are similar or slightly less.

On site we have a Pro shop which sells all top brand clothing and clubs. This got me thinking that a lot of people may want to start golf but don't want to Pay huge money for clothing as the initial costs can be High enough.

Reason for the post is to get some  thoughts on whether you would like to see in your club pro shops some clothing that was of good standard but very reasonable money? Not to replace the Branded stuff such as Taylormade but just to give you the option of getting more for your money? If your not that worried about named items?

Ive discussed this with my club and need support to get the ball rolling if people feel the same way.

Please let me know your thoughts

I can only speak for myself, but a pro shop at any golf course is the last place I would think to go for equipment when I'm new to the game. I buy shirts/shorts occasionally when I get a good members discount. Clothing is obtainable at so many venues be it online or any common retail store around. I can't imagine anybody relies on their pro shop for clothing since with golf it's pretty much, well, shirt and shorts/pants.

Welcome to TST.   We're glad you've decided to join.

I echo what @Vinsk has stated. Unless I absolutely have to have something from the pro shop, it will be the last place I'll choose to buy.   There are just too many less expensive options.

That being said, there are many people that will buy a hat, shirt or another piece of clothing with the club logo as a memento of their travels.

I hate to pile on, but I have to agree with everyone else. If I were looking for entry-level golf clothing (which I almost always am, since I don't love shelling out $80 for a polo), I'd go to outlet stores, TJ Maxx-type stores, Kohls, Macy's, Dick's, online, etc. Unless I specifically wanted something with a course logo, I wouldn't buy from a pro shop.

But hey, if I were a member at a club and they sold affordable clothing, I certainly wouldn't say no.

I can't recall ever buying clothing at a pro shop.

My first dri-fit golf shirt was from a company I did a summer internship for in 2007.  My next several were from Steve & Barry's when they had Bubba Watson's line of clothing for something like $9 / item.  A great price when I was in graduate school!

Even now, I largely buy from the clearance rack at the PGA Superstore / Roger Dunn / etc when they have my size and it looks good.  And I have enough shorts and shirts now really.

If you work at a golf course typically you should be eligible for an employee discount. I know when I worked in a pro shop I would typically get about 30% off for clubs and 50% off for clothing (in the US).

(edited)

The only time I buy clothing from a pro shop is if it is a place I probably won't likely get to play again, like say invited to play a private club with a member.  Or if I am playing right after work, and realize when I get to the course I forgot to bring a golf shirt or shorts or more often socks.

Like others have said, shop is always pricey and can get clothing for less easily elsewhere.
