Well, clearly he sucks at the game:

6 top tens out of 11 tourneys (4 of them top 5s) two of them the from the 3 majors of this year

Poor kid - how can he even afford to eat and pay his mortgage....

This shows how high Rory's standards are.. this would be a great run for most of the pros! Interesting to see who ends up being Rory's caddie. There's a rumour that his best friend Harry Diamond would caddy for him at WGC Bridgestone, but surely that has to be just for one tournament..

Let's be honest, from a course management perspective, how much could a caddy really help Rory? Maybe a stroke a tournament? I get that there's a lot of intangibles that a caddy could help with, but I have a hard time believing that a caddy could really directly save strokes with putting or course management help.

Diamond confirmed for the WGC Bridgestone and the PGA. Interesting, but you've got to feel that Rory's running out of excuses after this...

Currently focusing on: Key 4 - shorter backswing.

I am wondering if Spieth would even be relevant with out his caddie :-P.

I think it depends on the golfer. If you have a guy who can read the greens better than Rory does, that could be significant. If you have a guy who you are comfortable with, and trust, that can be significant.

IMO Rory will hang around leaderboards for the next few years because his ball striking is good enough. But I would make a hefty wager that he won't win anymore majors. I know most disagree, but that is my hunch.

I dont think that opinion is unreasonable. Winning majors isn't easy. Guys that have won four majors or more are usually canonized as golf royalty. But in the post tiger era, Rory is assumed to be some kind of disappointment because Tiger made winning appear so commonplace.  Rory has already done enough to have a HOF career IMO.

Is his hall of fame status questionable at this point...? I thought it was a given?

I think to some, he isn't an all time great. Even though his results say different. I think alot of folks hoped and even expected that Rory would erase Tiger from any conversations of GOAT by winning 20 majors or something. Thats obviously not going to happen and i feel like some in the sports media sphere and fan world tag him as a disappointment.  20 something wins, 4 majors. He's done enough already. I feel like that mantle of expectation is starting to shift to Jordan Spieth and its completley not fair to him, either.

Ironically, a year ago, I read a couple of articles talking about how Spieth needed to replace Greller to get to the next level.

I really don't think the issue with Rory is that he needs a better caddy. Maybe it'd help a little bit. The real issue is that he hasn't been healthy enough to get his swing to where he can dominate. No one was talking about his struggles 9 months ago when he won the FedEx Cup and then dominated the conversation at the Ryder Cup.

That was awesome but you do realize why Greller couldn't stand there right? That hole making bogey when double or worse was a real possibility saved the tournament

I truly believe that what Rory needs is a caddie to give him tough love first and foremost.  But what seems to be so wrong with his game is how many of his shots to the green wind up short or long and he looks at his caddie in amazement.  If this is because of his ball striking or club selection is something that needs to be figured out but he needs a coach and caddie with him on the driving range to figure this out and then he is back to dominating like he did a few years back.  No doubt getting a caddie will be easy for him but most importantly is someone he trusts.

@DeadMan, 1 stroke can truly make a difference and if your caddie can help you with that, then jump and pick a guy like that.  For a pro of Rory or Jordan's skill, a caddie is more about course management and perhaps reading greens.

I agree with Rory's reasoning for separating from JP. Why ruin a good personal relationships because of the working relationships, and every golfer should own their golf game. A very mature decision.

An update

Quote

“It’s a big change,” said McIlroy, who didn’t play the 2015 Bridgestone because of an ankle injury and the 2016 contest because he played in the French Open. “J.P. has been a huge part of my life for the last decade. A lot of great times on and off the golf course. I still consider J.P. one of my best friends, but sometimes to preserve a personal relationship, you might have to sacrifice a professional one and that was sort of the decision that I came to in the end. ...

"There’s nothing to say that J.P. mightn’t work for me again at some point, but right now I just felt like I needed a little bit of a change,” McIlroy said. “I hate the term fired or sacked or axed, because that’s definitely not what it was. I just changed my path a little bit, but maybe in the future that path might come back to where it was. Right now I just needed to mix things up a little bit, and J.P. understood that and we’re still all good.”

I bet it can be stressful for a friendship if you need to have a working relationship as well. Especially at the professional level at any sport.

Update² - Rory T4 at-3 with the new caddie.

Coincidence?

Probably

It's not windy out. Firestone South is a course you can take advantage of from off the tee and high approach shots. This course would favor Rory, like it favored Tiger.

I just wondered peoples opinion on mcilroy sacking his caddie? I personally feel he has made a bad decision, and feel his golf has slipped purely on his part. After all them wins and golden few years I don't see why change a winning formula

Everyone needs a change sometimes.  Rory has already changed equipment, ball, etc.  He admitted his golf has slipped because of himself and nobody else.  He also said, that he was reflecting the blame onto his caddie which he did not want to be doing.  They are very very good friends off the course too, so in an attempt to save the friendship they parted ways.  Rory even said we might even see him back on the bag in the future.  Make no mistake, J.P. will not be out of a job very long...

    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.

    • Cool here's my tweak, "If a player’s ball lies in the general area and there is interference from exposed tree roots or exposed rocks that are in the fairway or 1 club length from the fairway the tree roots and exposed rocks are treated as ground under repair. The player may take free relief under Rule 16.1b.[But relief is not allowed if the tree roots only interfere with the player’s stance.]
    • I would never do the extended warranty on the $50 slow cooker.  I also routinely reject the extended service plans on those toys we buy for the grand-kids.  I do consider them on higher cost items and will be more likely to get one if the product has a lot of "Electronic Tech" that is often the problem longer-term.  I also consider my intended length of ownership & usage.  If my thought is it would get replaced in 2-3 years then why bother but if I hope to use it for 10 years then more likely to get the extension. I did buy out a lease about a year ago.  Just prior to the lease end date the tablet locked up and would not function.  I got it repaired under the initial warranty and would not have bought it out if they had not been able to fix it since IMO once electronic issues start in a car they can be hard to track down & fix.  They did fix it but when I bought out the lease I paid up for the extended warranty the would cover electronic failures because my intent is to keep that car for another 8-10 years and I just do not trust the electronics to last.  Last week the touch screen went black and was unresponsive.  It reset on the 2nd time I restarted the car but that is exactly how the last malfunction started.  I fully expect to have a claim on that on repair under the extended warranty.  I do not recall the exact cost to fix last time since I did not pay it but I think it was @ $700-$800 and I suspect that will be higher next time.
