Bucket of balls at driving range. Pre-game warm up.

Takeaway felt really good. Set tone for not over swinging.

good contact with driver

Shanking, ugh, and it showed up on the course too.

August 6th

Played 18. Shot a 95 which was better than it felt. Had about 5 penalties, so I know the round could have been better. Focused on taking easy smooth swings. Learned I hit better/longer shots with what feels like soft arms through impact.

Sorry - been away and not able to post.

Spent 2 weeks working on my set up and moving closer to the ball.

Huge results ...straighter ball flight and more distance.

Moral to the story.... stand closer = better results

79 from 6990 yards

82 from 6700

77 from 6300

36 from 3500 - second nine

August 7.  Played what I thought was going to be 18 par-3s, but course (and property) maintenance made it 16.  That's fine;  for $10, I'm fine playing only 16.  I hit 13 GIR, plus a fringe.  I also had a short chip on #4 and a sand shot (that I got onto the green but missed the resulting putt) on #16 (#16 as numbered, not my last hole).  So much for practicing my short game in this situation!

Actually, I don't know -- for the shots under 100 yards, but from a tee, does GG count it as short game or approach?

Greens at this course were kind of meh, and in some cases literal mud or roots, but hey, I had fun.  Played with mom, who had more fun now that she has figured out distances (she only hit one green in regulation, but made three pars including that one, plus a bogey, and a bunch of 5s.  And had enough holes where hit the right distance just not the direction.  I don't think she's broken 110 since getting back to golf a few years ago, so this was a big great round for her).

I had hoped to do more short game/putting practice, but it looks like that's not what happened today.

Reviewing the GG round now:  I turned on the GG as I was on the putting green prior to hole 1 (no range at this course).  It detected that shot and applied it to hole 1 somehow. ;-)

Sorry was up in northern minnesota without wifi connection. I played one round this weekend (shot a 38). Another day focused on putting stroke with simple drills at the cabin. Final day worked on flexibility with stretches. Today I worked on putting drills again (50 putts doing Tigers gate from 4 feet away)

Flew back from Atlanta this afternoon. Arrived home about 7 P.M.

Practiced short putts indoors for 10 minutes. I've noticed lately - both indoors and on the course practice range - that I tend to have a jerky hand takeaway sometimes. Usually means I'm rushing and not setting up each putt properly.

August 7:  recuperating from 54 holes over the weekend.  10 minutes of easy swings with the Orange Whip just feeling the weight and stretching my back muscles.  Followed by a 20 to 30 pitches in my back yard with a 58 degree wedge.  Thinking about re-reading Bob Rotella's "Golf is not a Game of Perfect".  Also need to re-read LSW and get the putting drills started.  Bought a metal yard stick for practice at home.

Did about 50 swings in my back yard with the step drill working on getting my weight forward. Tried to hit a few in the garage but ended up shanking a lot of them so I went back and did 50 more swings. Still also focusing on spine tilt at the top of the swing.

August 8th - I played 14 holes today and shot 9 over. I was rained out for the last 4. Really happy with how my game is progressing. I hit the ball really solid today - barely missed some greens and my short game was a little shaky.

8/8:

Played 18 today but afterwards played a wee Links where all of the holes were less than 100 yards.  Worked on short approach shots.

Aug. 8

Finally got to swing golf clubs outdoors after my trip.

Got in more than an hour of assorted activities:

  • Warm-up with dynamic stretches.
  • Hit some half-swing shots with 4 iron.
  • Walked the wedges up and down the target line: With each wedge Quarter, Half and 3/4 shots. "Hinge and hold" short quarter pitches working well.
  • Worked 6i. 7i and 9i into various target greens around the practice range. After a choppy start, I started hitting mostly solid iron shots (GIR, nGIR!). Some sprayed left or right, but distance was good. Focused on visualizing the full ball flight and lining up properly. Was using snappier backswing (LSW, Backswing-Downswing Ratio, p. 34). This helped with overall balance and weight shift.
  • Using laser and yardage insets, hit partial wedges into downhill and uphill target greens. I had trouble with distance - some wedges hit in center of clubface just didn't have the speed-length of others. May be lack of full hip kick-pivot on downswing.

Tomorrow I play a practice round at Westborough CC; Senior Championship there Monday and Tuesday. In between, I play a Friday MAGA Amateur circuit Round #5 at Annbriar GC. Lots of golf coming up before school starts!

Focus, connect and follow through!

August 8th

Spent about 15 minutes working on my swing in the backyard.  Working on getting the feeling of keeping my head behind the ball but getting my weight forward.  Started off with super slow swings and progressed in speed up to about 75%.

5 min Sklz swing trainer. Tried to go as slow as I need to go to put the club in the slot. Trouble finding right form and keeping balance even at slow speeds. Doubts about swing path--am I doing right?

8/8/17:

Anyone watch trampoline dodgeball on ESPN 8? The Ocho.

Played 18 today.

Sore back first five or six holes, didn't hit a drive longer than 230... So I doubled the 1st again (I'm really starting to hate that hole)... I hit three pretty good shots 3rd shot from 140 (I didn't hit the drive more than 200). Hit 9-iron, fly it over the green. Not even downwind, flew the green... I get up there, and "Alina 1" is 6 inches from the base of a tree on the wrong handed side (or it was which club do I want to break to hit this shot)... So I took the only club I can play left-handed my putter.... I only hit the shot 15 feet. But hell, I hit a decent pitch to 10 feet, lipped out for a 6, made 7.

Not going to do a hole-by-hole but shot 44 on the front nine (I did hit 2 GIRs out of 9)....

The second nine was much better, after the messy first nine... Driver was on point (hit a solid 4h on the 11th to pin- high about 25 feet played 193 yards today). No birdies, however managed a 39 with 5 GIR... Mind you, my putter saved my ass on the front, 14 putts... The back nine I had 17 putts. No three-putts.

I was a little outside of birdie range on 3 of my birdie looks, Reasonable looks on 15 and 17 (I lipped out on 17). But missed them.

18, I hit a drive in the left rough about 205 yards from the flag. Hit a really good 4h that went just a titch further right than I wanted (I aimed right of the pin which was tucked up against the pot bunkers on the left.) Into a pretty safe chipping spot right of the green... Chipped on and made an 6 or 7 footer for a par 4...

Shot 44-39=83... But 5 GIR in 9 holes for me? I'm estatic... If I would have hit the 18 green... I could've applied for 100th ranked Tour Pro for Greens in Regulation.

For 9 holes... Anyway...

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
