We are 120 miles from the path of totality.  We can go west to Nebraska or south to Missouri.  Same distance either way.  We plan to check the weather forecast the day before and decide which way to head.

Our choice is to head to Missouri.  One of the towns in the path is known as "Quilt Town" and my wife likes to quilt.  The town has a very nice man cave as well.  I already have the glasses and camera filters to catch the eclipse.

I live in the path of totality and I took the day off. We're hosting some friends from Portland, I will probably break out the grill and make a block party.

We are expecting a million extra people in this area. Emergency Services are expected to be overwhelmed. think I heard the Governor has already called on the Nat'l Guard to help.

All for 2 minutes of fun

Ideally, you'll see a solar eclipse on a clear sunny day with no clouds in the sky. During the first hour, as the moon begins to eat away at the sun, it can only be viewed safely through filtered glasses (not sunglasses), telescopes with solar filters, or projection devices. Not much changes around you, but as more and more of the sun is covered, you begin to notice that colours are beginning to fade and a slight greyness pervades everything.

The temperature starts to noticeably drop, and shadows have crisper edges. Any reflections of sunlight, such as the surface of rippling water or shiny surfaces, take on a diamond-like appearance. Under trees, sunlight that makes it through the leaves make little crescents of light on the ground as the gaps between the leaves act as pinhole cameras projecting images of the sun.

Finally, as the last bit of the sun's brilliant surface disappears behind the moon, the light all around dims down as fast as the lights in a theatre before a movie begins. People begin screaming with delight as the moon's shadow, traveling anywhere from 2300 to 4700 km/h, passes overhead.

If that is not enough of a spectacle, four planets will also become visible during this eclipse, two on either side of the sun. Venus and Mars on one side, with Mercury and Jupiter on the other.

You'd be surprised at the lengths some people will go do for 2 minutes of fun ;-)

There will be a ton of video the instant it's over. Many in 4K. I know, not the same.

I was thinking about trying to drive to Kentucky to see the solar eclipse this month, but I've decide it will be easier to go to Sandusky (or Lima) in 2024.

I just received the 12 sets of solar eclipse glasses, mainly for my son to have with his buddies at school, I'll likely take a couple of pairs to work with me too.

We tested them out last night and it was pretty cool looking. Couldn't see anything except when looking right at the sun (which is how they are supposed to work) and it was overcast and looking right at the sun you could see the clouds partially passing in front of the sun.

I got the ones made by Lunt from B&H. Tested them at a restaurant, looked at the sun, cool, then someone knocked them off. My eyes, my eyes! That was pretty bad, but looked away quickly enough. Must have looked pretty silly. You can kind of see the flash light of your smartphone, but yeah, they're pretty strong.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
