The problem with that is that on the rare occasion a star player takes out a fringe player, the fringe player may be induced to sit for a loooooooong time.

I don't believe in punishing the result, and sometimes weird stuff happens. That would be punishing the result, not the actual hit. It's the same as not giving a fine/suspension if the player is uninjured, but in reverse.

Certainly fair points, especially about a lesser player feigning severity to cost another player/team time. I did qualify with "at least", if only to be sure that the most egregious violators receive just punishment. There are any number of better and more effective systems of discipline that could be put in place and improve the current NHL concept of "oops".

But hits to the head should be punished severely. I see no reason for leniency or pretending to buy some guys excuse. Sorry, no, you're out.

The whole leaving the skates thing has become a real no-no anymore.

I was surprised to see Zajac was the one that answered for NJ.

And then they disallowed what would have been Crosby's 400th because a Pens stick, tied up with a Devils stick, grazed the goalie (who went down like he was shot, despite having pucks flung at him at 90 MPH and being fine), and remained on the ice for several seconds when he could have gotten up to re-establish himself.

Lovejoy's (a Devil) stick is the one that rakes the goalie.

Bad call. They talked quite a bit about the Neal situation during the review and aftermath of this goal. (I say goal because it should have stood.)

Lol yea I saw that and said to my brother, "That goal will stand because it's Lovejoy's stick". Im current 0-3 on replays this year. :-P

He got hit in the neck from what I saw of the replay.

But hey they immediately waived off a Devils goal because Palmieri IIRC wiped out your goalie and that's totally a legal play based on what I saw in that Boston game.

Yeah, it should have been a goal.

I think you're right about Lovejoy's stick. Just below the mask.

That puck didn't go in until well after the net was off the moorings.

NHL refereeing, man…

Agreed.

Did the net get dislodged? I might be misremembering, but I thought the goalie was knocked sideways out of the crease. Doesn't matter anyway, it's interference/incidental contact, no goal. Just like that Boston/St. Louis game should have been.

Damnit, McDavid has a four goal performance last night and I’m on holidays in a country with zero NHL coverage.   Listening to games on the interwebz just isn’t the same.

Also, please suspend Alexandre Burrows for at least half a dozen games.  What an idiot.

Looks like just a phone hearing, so, nope.

Asking a lot for the NHL to actually begin to take appropriate actions… you know better than that @Warren Zevon.

Well, I figure Hall isn’t an Oiler anymore so DOPS might actually do something.

I kept my mouth shut about the goalie interference stuff.  You have no idea how many goals Edmonton has had called back this year.

Edit:  The league wanted to have an in person hearing with Burrows, which he waived for a phone call instead.   It looks like he’ll be getting a little playcation.

Oh. I just saw the “phone call” headline.

Burrows is suspended for 10 games.

Usually when the league wants to meet in person, it's serious.

In other news, Marchand is back, and didn't even miss the All Star Game. Johansson still out indefinitely with a concussion.

Damn it, I was hoping Chiarelli could dump off Lucic and his albatross contract at the deadline.  If he keeps his current level of play up he's probably going to be bought out.

This probably doesn't need to be asked, but if you don't want him on your team due to his declining play and ridiculous contract, who did you expect would pick him up and what would you be willing to part with to make that happen?

A team close to the cap floor?   It was just wishful thinking.  And seeing what a lot of players didn’t get in return for their clubs was less than inspiring.

I kind of expected Lucic to be slow on the ice.   I didn’t figure his hockey sense and hands would go so quickly, as well.
