Punch Shot Club

  1. 1. What club do you use when you have to punch out from the trees (and keep the ball under the low branches)?

5 iron for me.

I feel pretty confident that I can produce a 100 yard punch out and a 150 yard punch out. I can't really punch out any further than that. And if I'm punching less than that I'm basically guessing.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

4H or 5I or 6I depending on lie and distance needed and how low I have to keep it. I started using the 4H near the end of last year and have fewer "misses" with it.

Standard 5i, but I have experimented using my 19o rescue club. I usually try that when I'm trying to get more distance than with the 5i.

6 iron, would be 4 or 5 if I carried them.  I usually shut the face down, play it back and hit a low draw recovery.

Custom made 2 hybrid. Little bigger than a normal hybrid but smaller than a fairway wood. My buddies call it my get out of trouble club. I can punch it low or high 10-130 yards straight, fade, or big slice if needed. Doesn’t want to draw which is my natural shape even off the tee so I only hit in when I am in trouble.

Generally anything from a 2 iron to a 7, but on average I'd say a 4-5 iron.

Iacas was pretty specific about the shot - low punch a few feet off the ground.  I'll choose a more or less lofted club depending on which way I have to bend it (if I have to).

I read maybe 2 months ago.....your 6 iron tip to extract a shot under the trees to get out of the woods.

I tried it back then for a couple of shots with success...then abandoned it ......to go back to my usual 5 iron extraction shot.

Played today...and after a lousy 5 iron extraction on the 7th and 10th hole...went to the 6 iron for a shot on the final hole with much success.

I'll now stick to the 6 iron until it fails....lol.

I fail to see what significance using a 6 iron instead of a 5 iron has. It has more loft, so that can't be it. Shorter club maybe? That you can control the club slightly better, but you may want to choke down on the handle whichever club is used.

ya...I think this is the thread.....most golfers use their lowest lofted iron to punch a low shot out of the woods...for me a 5 iron.

But you said you prefer to use a 6 iron and then hit a shot and delofting it at impact...or something like that to punch a shot....I have found success with this method...I'll use it until it fails...lol....hopefully it never fails and I continue to employ this method.

My #1 option is the driver.  Whenever I use a hybrid or fairway iron, I usually get the ball to high into the air and into the low-hanging tree branches.  I just choke up on the driver, move the ball back in my stands and swing the club like a putter.  this works great, plus it allows me to pick up some distance (depending upon how hard I swing the club).
