which club is more difficult for you?

Yes, I know....difficult to get a consensus, but (other than driver), which club do you feel gives you the most trouble?

For me, it is the 3H.  Interestingly enough, I have two 4H, but each with different loft. Bobby Jones Black is called as a 4H with 21 degrees of loft, but the Calloway Diablo 4H has 22. The Bobby Jones is the easiest of all.  I can hit my 3 FW  XCG-7 Beta fairly easily. One would think the 3H would be, but such is not the case.  Of course, the different shafts would weigh heavily in the equation.

Anything that's considered a "sand wedge" with more than a 1/2 to 2/3 swing.

5W. I just don't have a good feeling for it. I don't have a good feel for the take away or the top of the swing, whether it should "feel" more like the driver or more like, say a 3H? If I grip it strong it pulls badly, if I hit down on it goes too high.. if I top it... yuck. And where is the ball position supposed to be?

I know this club has incredible potential to help my scoring on par-5's and that's why I bought it. But I will probably need a lesson this off-season to use it effectively.

5W's can be  tricky. Mostly diminutive head size, lack of confidence. Most have better luck setting up a little back in stance with a little more descending arc.  I used to muse about a persimmon 5W being nearly impossible to miss the sweet spot, as if you do, you are whiffing the ball.  I prefer smaller head sizes (440 in a driver), but that's just me.

For me it is my 4,5, and 6 irons with anything other than a punch shot swing. It doesnt really seem to be too much of an issue right now though, a hard 7 iron for me can reach 180, and my 3 hybrid can go 180-220 depending on if I choke down and how hard I swing. I know I probably should get better at hitting the 4,5,6 irons, but I have a hard time justifying the need to spend time on them when I dont really have a glaring distance gap at the moment.

I might face 180-200 yds out one, maybe two times per round at the most. Most par 4s I have <180 for my 2nd, most par 5s are over 200 for my second. I dont know that me getting better at hitting 4,5,6 irons would really help me save that many strokes.

I'm actually getting very comfortable hitting 1/2 to 3/4 shots from say 7i down.... It gets a little tricky with longer clubs. But 3/4 swings with Driver down to gap wedge works well. I would rather hit a 1/2 swing or so PW from 90-100 than try to force say a 54°. I feel more comfortable. It actually helps from 50-75 yards (my absolute nemesis distance) if I just think "half swing". Are there times I need a "full height shot" from there? Sure. But the premise I've decided is if the clun has 54° or more. I don't really need more than a two-thirds length swing, ever. Mostly half swings.

They all take turns.

3I is used exclusively for punch shots. No faith at all on a full swing.

3W only gets used off the tee. (Note the 5W is generally my best behaved club)

SW gets used all the time but pisses me off frequently.

Then there is that dumb putter thing. Not even sure why I have that one in the bag.

... To answer the question, I'll go SW.

For me, difficulty is directly proportional to length.

5W for me. Funny thing too. All my FWs and driver are matched. However, I have a tendency to hit my 5ver fat more times than I care to remember. Now I usually know what I am doing wrong to hit these fatties, but why I only do it with my 5ver is one of those golf mysteries I gave up trying to figure out a long time ago. It's not the club mind you. It's me.

3W used to be for me, but when I bought the XCG7 "beta" it became easier. This is a little unusual given that the "beta" is supposed to be one with lower trajectory and recommended for better players. I did not have any trouble. I think possibly because the face is deeper but the head size is smaller. Off the tee, I do not tee it very high, just maybe 1/4 inch or just the crown of the tee showing.  Fairway, is hit or miss with a fat hit every so often, but a lot of clean shots also.

For me it’s still hybrids. I have a 3H & 4H but I have better luck with my 2i & 3i. I’ll keep trying but I’m not hopeful, so I’m probably biasing my own outcome.

I’m planning on buying a new set of (fitted) irons this winter, and still not sure if I’ll buy the optional long irons or hybrids...

It’s my sand wedge.  Easily.  No consistency at all with that club.

When I’m striking the ball well, my five wood can be my best friend on the course.

That's easy... it's so we can turn birdies into bogeys.

My hybrid, 21 degree. Hybrid used to be my friend. Lately I've been getting a handle on my irons and am even considering a 20 or 21 degree , maybe 4 iron. It seems to only be a replacement for a deep rough putt or a punch out.

Back in the day it became long irons, which started my transition to hybrids, and which I have hit well from day one! I don't know what it is, they just seem to fit my swing. I don't carry a true iron longer than a 6 these days.

Now, it's less than full swing wedges. From 40 to 80 yards is a sore spot. There was a time when I hit a lot of shanks at those distances, but I figured that out. Now I hit the ball in the direction I want, just not the proper distance.

    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.

    • Cool here's my tweak, "If a player’s ball lies in the general area and there is interference from exposed tree roots or exposed rocks that are in the fairway or 1 club length from the fairway the tree roots and exposed rocks are treated as ground under repair. The player may take free relief under Rule 16.1b.[But relief is not allowed if the tree roots only interfere with the player’s stance.]
    • I would never do the extended warranty on the $50 slow cooker.  I also routinely reject the extended service plans on those toys we buy for the grand-kids.  I do consider them on higher cost items and will be more likely to get one if the product has a lot of "Electronic Tech" that is often the problem longer-term.  I also consider my intended length of ownership & usage.  If my thought is it would get replaced in 2-3 years then why bother but if I hope to use it for 10 years then more likely to get the extension. I did buy out a lease about a year ago.  Just prior to the lease end date the tablet locked up and would not function.  I got it repaired under the initial warranty and would not have bought it out if they had not been able to fix it since IMO once electronic issues start in a car they can be hard to track down & fix.  They did fix it but when I bought out the lease I paid up for the extended warranty the would cover electronic failures because my intent is to keep that car for another 8-10 years and I just do not trust the electronics to last.  Last week the touch screen went black and was unresponsive.  It reset on the 2nd time I restarted the car but that is exactly how the last malfunction started.  I fully expect to have a claim on that on repair under the extended warranty.  I do not recall the exact cost to fix last time since I did not pay it but I think it was @ $700-$800 and I suspect that will be higher next time.
    • Have you looked at Model Local Rule F-9 Relief from Tree Roots in or Close to Fairway?  You could extend this to cover exposed rocks.  The rule is recommended to be used only for areas relatively near the fairway, a player who hits a shot 20 yards in the woods doesn't really deserve relief.   Players can always take Unplayable Ball relief, they're not required to play it from a rock or a root.  Of course, they hate to take the penalty stroke too.
