I think by now it's just part of their brand and what fitters are accustomed to.

I guess if you get fit or stick with PING irons it's easier to remember a color code than a number, most people have no idea what their 6-iron lie angle is. And obviously you have to be careful with just saying 1° flat because that means something different for each OEM. Heck even then length can be a little different depending on OEM because not everyone measures length the same.

I get that, but in changing the color codes, they've made things far more confusing than remembering "1° flat." Black now means "standard lie angle." Red is now always 1° flat. It used to be dynamic: black but -1" would mean the lie angle was different. So for awhile, the lie angles were dynamic, and now they're right back to static, I think.

I also don't think remembering "1° flat" is more difficult than remembering "red" (or whatever).

I think 90% of the reason is that they invented it, and the other 10% may be that it encourages people to get fit, rather than just accept "1° flat" from a completely different club maker whose standard lie angles may not be the same as PING's standard lie angles.

Which is fine, but… consider that this topic exists, while nobody would ever post a topic saying "I don't understand what 2° flat and 1" short means".
