I get it. We actually think the same but you have made it a challenge to get past. Good idea!

Nope.  I use to hit a small bucket, cycle through my clubs playing shots on holes I have played before.  Wouldn't hit any wedges as I would head to the chipping area after the bucket was done with my shag bag full with 60 balls in it.

I would do 120 chips, pitches, chunk n runs, flops, bumps and anything else I could think of.

I would finish up with a game of 3 ball on the putting green... all 3 balls in from 2', 4', 6' and other distances.  That was a pretty good practice routine.  I miss that facility!

I actually don't mind leaving the range on a not that well hit shot. Keeps one from being complacent. And bonus if video shows you're changing the picture. Sometimes a good looking shot means you're not making the changes you want. It sounds counter-intuitive, but golf at times is counter-intuitive.

For practice I will hit every ball in a small bucket (approx 30). I also want to leave on a good note, but the idea behind hitting every last ball is to simulate pressure.

If I am warming up before a round I will hit every club once, and maybe the driver 2-3 times (half a small bucket). If I hit one bad I do not re-hit, because the idea is to trust my swing.

I don't ever leave the range early, whether I'm hitting them well or not.  Reason is, I love to hit golf balls.  I hit way too many on the range, actually.  I usually wind up with a sore back, which I don't ever get from playing 18 holes.  But I don't want to stop, because I love hitting balls.

I always finish the bucket at the range, whether I'm hitting well or not. If I'm not, might as well try to figure out why. And if I'm hitting well, might as well try to reinforce the swing when the parts seem to be working. However, I usually only buy a small bucket vs the large (twice as many balls). I've seen guys buy two large buckets - I wouldn't want to hit that many balls good or bad.

I don't like hitting at the driving range because it does not mimic playing on course, but I need the practice so I try to focus on the range. Last season I went to the range once a week and played twice a week for the most part. I'd rather "practice" on course more than the driving range. YMMV

Just the left the range on a perfect Sunday evening in San Diego. I hit maybe 25 balls. My rule hasn't changed. If I'm hitting well I'm outta there.

I’m very fortunate to have a unique facility at my disposal. That being said, if I’m not playing I’ll spend anywhere from 3-6hrs on the range. I’d do it every day if I could. And I do this while having a full time job. So yeah, the pros are just a bunch of pansies. I always leave on a good shot. But unlike most of you, my bad shots are shanks so I can’t imagine anyone wanting to leave on a shank.

Depends on why I'm at the range.  There's a good fraction of the time where if I'm hitting them well, I'm doing something wrong.  My first 2-3 range sessions working on a new priority piece I hit it poorly.  Sometimes I look like a 30 handicap out there.  But you know what?  Instead of "let me hit the next one well" I keep working on what my instructor has me working on.  And before too long, it becomes a better swing (that eventually produces good shots too).

If I'm just at the range to warm up, sure, I'll leave after a good shot if there's still a few balls left.

If I'm at the range and reinforcing my priority piece, but I've got it to the point where I can hit good shots with it, no, because my reason for going was reinforcement.

If I am hitting the ball well, I want as many reps as possible for muscle memory to develop.  This would also depend if I was just in routine practice or if I was in the middle of a swing change.

I'll leave on a good shot, but only if I'm getting down to the end of a bucket.  If there's more than about 10 balls in the bucket, I'll hit more.

I like to leave on a good shot and will walk even if balls are remaining. Generally I bring several goals to my practice session and will leave when / if I hit my goal for 3 shots in a row.

I'm 49 and have lower back issues.  I have to balance practice and keeping my body healthy enough to golf the weekend.  I just found out that I can't go a week without hitting a ball and expect to play my normal game. ha!

I always end a session with a good drive.  I've taken a sleeve of balls out of my bag to do so before.  😉

The range closest to me is closed for renovation, so I only hit balls before I play. I definitely go on the  putting green if I am swinging well, loose, and the ball is going well.

If anything, I may stay too long. I am lucky that my range uses a ball card and If I want to only hit 35, I don't have to purchase 50).  I do have a routine if I am going through all my clubs (putter excluded; that is a day's focus),  or unless I am working on a fix of one sort or the other.  Minimum of 10 shots per club, but I often take a break between clubs to allow brain to re-gather its thoughts or to hydrate or go to the practice trap at my range.  I try not to end on a bad shot, but will not be upset if I don't either.

It makes no difference to be whether I am hitting well or not.  For practice, I just buy a bucket of 35 range balls and work on one thing I am there to do and leave afterwards.  If I am playing a round, I usually hit about 10-15 total range balls as a warm up.

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
