What is your most important wedge?

  1. 1. If you had to pick your favorite wedge, what would it be?

    • Pitching Wedge
    • Approach/Gap Wedge
    • Sand Wedge
    • Lob Wedge
    • Other, please specify
    • I can't pick just one, they all do different things

I have:

PW, AW, SW & the LW

I’d say that my single most favorite wedge is the sand wedge.  I use it for everything.   The LW is a close second.   What say you, if you had to pick just one?

I would say right now, my 50 degree wedge is the one I use the most.  It's a Ping G-series "U" wedge.   I have a good feel for those 20 to 50 yard pitches, or chips around the green, with that club.

I have a 45 degree pitching wedge, the 50 degree "U" wedge,  an old off-brand sand wedge, and a Cleveland 60 degree wedge.   The 50 degree wedge seems to be the most versatile.

I have a hard time calibrating distance with the 60 degree wedge.  Half the time it just goes straight up and down, and it's hard to calibrate how far it's going to go.  I have to take a big swing just to make it go 20 yards.

I certainly hit some irons better than others, but I’ve never had a favorite wedge or any other iron. I use most of if not all of them during a normal 18 hole round. Sorry.

I don’t have a lob wedge though, I hit my SW so high I can’t imagine a LW - will it hit me in the face? jk

Not to long ago my favorite was my LW. These days it's my SW. I find myself using it quite often, and I have lots confidence in it.

Several months ago, I made the decision to go with just two wedges instead of 4. This made for fewer decisions on the course. That, and I found I could, by opening the face, easily make two wedges work for my game.

I still have, and sometimes use my LW, and AW

I added a poll.

For me, it's my LW. It's my primary greenside wedge and I started using it out of bunkers recently, as well. It's easy to hit high pitches and flops with and I can deloft it to hit lower shots as needed.

I've been thinking about mixing in some more wedges for greenside options, but the LW will still be the go-to wedge.

Thanks.

Anything from 100 yards in, I take all 4 wedges (and maybe another club or two) because there are just too many variables....

I pick 60 degree because I use it most around the greens.  That last poll option sucks.  If you were in a limited club game and could only choose one, which would it be?  Of course all our clubs do different things.

What if the question was "would you rather leave your driver in the trunk or your 7 iron?"  Would a reasonable answer be "I can't be without either, they both do diffent things."?  (Keeping your driver has got to be better.)

The last option is the only one that makes sense.

The only option missing is to swap out the damn 60* wedge for a chipper for most players over single digit hcp...

I don't think so. It's the only reasonable option for people who don't have a primary wedge for short game shots.

That's not what's being asked in the thread.

That's not really a good comparison. Your driver and 7I are both golf clubs designed to hit a golf ball, but that's about where the similarities end. They have completely different functions.

A better comparison might be if you asked people to pick between their 4, 5, 6, or 7 irons, but we're getting OT.

There's an option for that, and for all the XE1 wedge lovers. ;-)

But seriously if swapping my LW for a chipper was going to make me a single digit index, I'd do it in a heartbeat. But I'm not sure how putting a chipper in the bag will reduce the lateral dispersion of my drives or the number of penalty strokes I take and we both know the short game is overrated :-P

I use them all, but if I had to pick a favorite, it would be the SW. I was hitting greenside cut shots with a SW for 15 years before the LW appeared. And, it gets me out of bunkers.

Well, you’re the boss.  But the question was “if you HAD to pick your favorite, what would it be?”  I like using several clubs around the green as well but the 60 is my favorite.

In keeping with the spirit of the thread, if I could only have one wedge, I'd dump all of mine, and opt for a single, high-bounce 54* wedge.  Right in the middle of the 4 I now carry.

Thankfully, that's not something I need to do...

    • Shot 92 yesterday on a course I get 15 shots on, so net +5. Not hopeless, but I have a lot to work on.  Fairways 4/14, greens 5/18 and 33 putts, 3 doubles and 2 tripples tells a lot.  This was my best hole (even with the 3-putt) (490y par 5):  305 yard drive to mid fairway 174 yard 8i to 15 feet (above the hole) The downhill putt was too long and it ended with a 3-putt par. Very happy with the 2 shots to the green!    My homecourse opens this season, so I will squeeze in a couple of rounds then.
    • That's hilarious. I had a set of clubs for a short time without the line drawn under the 6 and the 9. Drove me crazy.  Nowadays it's impossible for me to make that mistake, my 9 iron is a different style of club AND a different brand. I have a 9 iron players blade and a Super Game improvement 6 iron. 9 iron is dynacraft, 6 iron is Tour Edge. I dare say nobody could confuse them.
    • That’s the feel I use too. It’s feeling the head drop behind with the start of the swing going more out than down. It flattens the shafts so by A5 it’s on plane.
    • Why not square? Hooks suck, too. Your face is shut in both swings.
    • Have you made the 6 instead of 9 mistake? I have! Wow that 9 iron went far!
