Welcome to the "5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge for November, 2017! The rules are the same as always:

  • Make a detailed post describing your practice every day during the month. Try to limit the number of very short or "ditto" type posts. Describe what you did for at least five minutes of practice (indoors or out, with or without golf balls, etc.).
  • No back-dating or pre-dating posts or practice sessions.
  • On the last day of the month, if you completed the challenge, post about it in red text so I can notice it and give you the award.

Enjoy and practice hard!

Note: you can miss one day per monthly challenge if you have a good reason and still be eligible for the monthly award.

11/1/17:

Worked with my new stronger grip with some takeaway drills, making sure it's a one-piece takeaway, low and slow.

I spent a few minutes practising my chipping action in the basement. I have a mat I chip from and a putting green I chip to. I've shifted the mat to be into the grain to make it harder. I'm working on getting my left arm to separate from my chest a little bit.

Is this for the stupid monkey award?

Had to work, later than usual so right after dinner, I played my putting game in the living room. 1st as close to the opposite wall as possible, 2nd 18 inches behind, 3rd 18 inches then just repeated to work on my feel of the putter.

Its 8:27pm HST 11/1 if this posts on 11/2 please count as 11/1

More of this.

Also, working on half swings at "full speed" with a swing speed monitor. Looking at how much variation I'm getting with partial swings from the same positions.

11/2/17:

Nice day today, went out and worked on my "9:30 swings", 54°, PW, and 8i... With my new to me stronger grip, I don't hit that stupid block to the right. It's getting better. Just need to continue to work on it, so maybe just maybe I can get Keys #4 and #5 better.

Tried this out in the short game area with what I call "beginners" results. I hit a few flags and holed one ball, but everything else was scattered over the entire green. It looked like a mess. Until I get within 10 yards or so, it was more or less random. Don't know iif it's simply limited by what's possible or not, but I feel like other players can do better.

Hit more balls on the range. Used an exaggerated A2 target line pause and paused again at the top of my swing. Did the same thing all the way up to driver. Shots are going straighter, but I still pulled a few of my more aggressive shots. I think I loaded the shaft too much.

I spent a few minutes working on my downswing movement. I’m trying to get the feeling of my right arm straightening from the top of my backswing. I’m going to also hit a few chips and putts in the basement after my dinner.

11/2 On our small backyard, warmed up, hit 8 balls lined up 1 at a time, did that a few times, then took 24 swings trying to get the balls on to the roof. Soft practice balls, wasn’t taking out any windows, then went inside and did living room putting closest contests. Hope to play tomorrow.

Warming up with a club simulator using the above movements.

It's quickly becoming an integral part of my swing now, as my shots seem to be more accurate. Maybe it will be smoother with time? But the thoughts and feels should remain.

9-iron slow swings just focusing on positions, it was only a 9-iron because it was handy.

11/3. Had the chance to get on a wide open muni. Played 18 in 2:20, goal was no 6’s had 2 on 1&9, but my practice today was on hitting the greens in regulation, instead of around the greens. Went well.

Practiced this more, because I played a round where I didn't maintain this performance and didn't relax enough for the swing. Basically hitting all over the place, while competing. Need to learn to do all the things I've been practicing with or without pressure.

    • Day 8: Indoor backswing work, mostly rehearsals of takeaway. Hit some balls wtih 6-iron working on adding flow, but not too Much which I tend to do, swaying too far away from target.
    • Day 55: 4/18/2024 Got to the range again today. Planned to do my priority pieces and then hit targets with irons. But after my priority pieces I hit a few drives and tugged them all hard left. .... Uh... oh boy.  So, I spent about a half hour trying to hit targets at the range with my driver.
