Hello TST Fantasy Golfers,

As many of you know, Yahoo has dropped fantasy golf for 2018.  Some digging has been done, and a replacement has been found. The PGA Fantasy golf was looked at, but it started with the Fall segment so is 25% done, and some of us play that too, so we would not start off on an equal footing. @Undr Par found one on The Golf Channel, and it starts next week with the Tournament of Champions, so we figured it would be best.

The format is different than Yahoo in that you set a roster of 6; each player is assigned a monetary value, and you have $100, 000 to spend per week on your roster. Points are given for scoring (set amount for birdies, eagles etc) along with placing for the tournament. A full list of rules can be found here: http://static.golfchannel.com/Fantasy/2018/2018-Golf-Channel-Fantasy-Contest-Official-Rules-FINAL.pdf

To join, go to the link below:

https://www.playfantasygolf.com/league/join/rywWkYlmf

No Password is required; you do have to set up an account with the Golf Channel if you don't have one.

I have never played this one in the past, so will be interesting to see how it goes. I also hope it is easy to join; TGC does not provide a lot of instruction on their site. We can do this one for 2018, get some feedback, and then decide for 2019 whether to keep with this one or hop over to the PGA Tour one (which has more similarities with Yahoo in terms of picking a lineup, but does have a complicated scoring system).

Good luck to all TST Fantasy golfers. I hope you are having a good Christmas. BTW, someone on TGC has my GoGolfing tag, so I am now GoGolfingcanada in the new league; hoping it doesn't mess with my mojo!

Hope the regulars @Club Rat @kpaulhus @Undr Par @Warren Zevon @Strat-Pack Rick @boogielicious @Wally Fairway @Carl Spackler @J M Brown @Shindig @Toffeelover @Ernest Jones can all come on board.

Let me know how joining the League goes.

The Sand Trap Fantasy Golf 2018

Commissioner: GoGolfingCanada

"Good luck to The Sand Trap members in another season of Fantasy Golf.
Go to the account tab on your page, and the rules are given in detail."

Everyone be sure to check out the points rules as they are much different than Yahoo.

@gogolfing - Question? I'm guessing the TST league is private and will members qualify for prizes also from the Golf Channel?
Thanks for setting this up again this year ....

@Club Rat I am assuming it is Private, but the Golf Channel does not give a lot of details. Looks like to join you either have to have the link or an email invite, but it did not ask for a Password to set the league up like Yahoo did and the PGA Tour Fantasy does. As for prizes, I do believe we would all be eligible for the weekly prizes discussed on the rules page.

I'd also note that when you sign up, it looks like you are assigned a random user name that contains mostly numbers and a few letters. If you go to the Account tab, then Account Settings, you can edit your User Name.

I’ve joined, but they say to contact the commissioner to join and existing league.

I'm going to want to join and will set up later today.  Thanks for putting this together.

The description makes me miss ESPN's Best Ball league.

Yes, trust me, I did one last search for ESPN Fantasy golf just in case there was a revival....no luck. I enjoyed their Best Ball league. I guess there are just not enough fantasy golf geeks out there to support them....though we TST seems prevalent with them!

I am looking forward to trying the salary cap nature of TGC league.

We have hit double digits in the league...don't forget to change your User Name from the random numerical one TGC provides, to one similar to your Sand Trap user name so we can keep track of things.

Great; welcome on board. You will enjoy it. We are up to 14 members. To see who is in the league, you have to do some digging:

Hit the blue view button on the right of the league page, then click on Leaderboard and it will show who is in.

I know Yahoo had a limit of 50, no indication from TGC if there is a limit on this one.

I'm in as well. I didn't like the old scoring system mostly because I sucked.

    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
