"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge

Day 295

Just putting practice this morning. Focuses were on reads, ailignment, and putter face aim.

Started off on a flat portion of the green, rolling balls over a dime, 15+/- inches in front of the ball. Hitting the dime tells me if I am rolling a straight putt.

After that it was putting to the practice pins of various lengths. Went through 36 pins with only one 3 putt.

Day 38:

Good range session today. Focused on alignment and the "Rickie Fowler" feel. Shanks were nonexistent, though I did hit a few pull hooks. All in all a good first day working on some feels seriously. I like the take away feel for sure. probably 45 minutes at the range today...maybe an hour.

Day 104

I will be very lucky to get to a DR today.  So I made time to do physical exercises which are to strengthen the hip rotation as opposed to simply shifting weight.  Did 40 repetitions.  Amazingly did not feel stiffness on the rotations.  Also did a few "swings" with my 5i just to put it into action.

In My BELDIN Green Bay Packer 1999 SUPER BOWL CHAMPION bag :  :ping: G410 Plus Alta Red CB 55 sr,  GX-7  (acting as a 3 wood)  :ping: 4H, 5H. Sr Flex   :ping:  G400 6i Sr Flex, G-Max 7i. 9i Sr Flex , Glide 2.0  Wedges (50º, 56º, 60º)  :touredge:  Chipper  :ping: Putter: Cadence Mid-TR 350g:bridgestone:  e12 for the items I try to hit on purpose.  :footjoy: on my feet and hands, US Embassy-Singapore hat on my head (with PACKERS, Brewers or UW-Badgers hats as options).

Day 12: Mirror work today. Working on getting a feel for shallowing up the downswing. This has been a stumbling block for me, so it's going to need a lot of work. Really working on getting an exaggerated feel, even if it looks a little ridiculous.

Day 46.  Another long day at work, another dozen balls in my indoor practice room when I got home.  Slowly hit, and I love the feeling.

Day 14, October 23

Mirror work at the gym. Focused on head position at set up, then downswing with lower hands at A6. Worked with the feel of my right elbow going down and forward and staying bent while rotating with my torso. It's going to rain later, so I don't think I will get to hit balls outside or film.

Day 296

Just some simple chipping in a road side rest area. The dogs needed a travel break, as did I.

Focus was on no real focus. Just walked around the area hitting foam balls for safety reasons. Maybe 20 minutes worth.

Day 105:

Same rotation focus as yesterday but with clubs in hand and round objects to hit. Just an observation, it is so much easier to hit straight and far when proper hip movement is included in the process (and, keeping the head down!)

DAY 334    A couple of hours on the range at The Legacy Club working on the turn in my backswing and my impact position.  Working through a series of drills to help.  Today was not as good.  I wish improvement was a straight line instead of a series of peaks and valleys.  :-)

Day 47.  Today's a bit of a cop-out.  Knowing I'd be at work all day, I took some time in my office to work on setup and slow swings using a coat hanger to hold onto as if it were the grip of an incredibly light club.  Same thing I used to do when I couldn't get out for the day.

Day 297

Used a good friend's large front yard for some chipping, and pitching practice this morning. I hit balls off a mat to avoid damaging my clubs hitting off his drive way. . He is going to help me scope out the various golf courses in the Tucson area later today.  He's a "once in a while" golfer.

Focus was on just staying loose with my swing. Got in a few of my preshot routines, and of course my putting stroke chip shots.

Pitch shots were 1/2-3/4 swings with my A-Wedge. Same focuses as above.

Probably play 18 tomorrow.

Day 106:

used a 9 to 3 slower motion to double check consistency of body angle and to set keeping everything in position.  Took about 30 shots after about 30 strokes without hitting anything.  Hope to get to DR this evening to go at it a little fuller

DAY 335    Got out just in time for the range to be closed for the day.  They close at 3 pm on Wednesdays to mow the range.  So headed back home... and spent time in the garage doing drills against the wall.... which help me stay in posture, have a more extended follow through, and not take the club back inside on the backswing..... all great drills, just wish I could have gotten out since the weather was spectacular.

    • I run tournaments and want to put in a local rule that allows relief from tree roots and rocks that are not loose impediments. We have some really terrible lies in some of our courses in my area and nobody is getting paid enough to break clubs. Let me know if you think the verbage for this rule makes sense. Local Rule Roots and Rocks You may move your ball from a tree root or buried rock one club length for free relief no closer to the hole. However you may not use this rule to get relief from a tree, bush, boulder, or other foliage hindering your swing. Your only option here is to play it as it lies or take an unplayable for a one stroke penalty.
    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
