"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge

DAY 446    RIse and Grind.  Started on the putting green working with the Pelz Putting Tutor to train and get feedback on my skill in starting the ball on line.   Finished the hour long session with distance drills.  Starting at 15 feet, then all the way to 60 feet with 5 foot increments.  I putt one ball and it has to end in a 3 foot circle around the hole that starts one foot short of the hole and two feet behind it.  The goal is to get everyone in the circle.

Then headed to the range to work for a couple hours plus on my swing.  Focused on the six steps or positions, then several motion drills (right foot back, left foot back, sumo squat 3 woods, ....)    While working on my positions I also have been working on my sequence since I tend to start my shoulders too soon in the downswing.  Solid day.

Day 208

To call today crisp would bean understatement.  42º at the start of my physical warm-ups and my swing, itself never got hot at all.   While sound and basic feel said everything was solid, distance was ok, but not great.  I did hit a few that somewhat stung my hands.  Tomorrow looks as if it will be the same in terms of morning temps, so I may put off my practice until afternoon.

I did keep the plans to work on tee shots; and I still plan on working the whole bag through.  It is somewhat amazing, however, that my friend is already wimping out for Sunday!

Day 10:

Well they closed my range down about a week ago and honestly it may be the best thing that happened to my practice routine. I set up a practice area in my garage and I spent so much more time practicing correctly and not just beating balls.

Anyway, today I practiced partial wedges and full pitching wedge. Using the feel of proper forearm rotation in the downswing really has helped my contact. My partial wedges are especially crispy.

Day 38, 7 February

After 37 consecutive days, some quite long, working on a new swing, and how to hit a driver (after knee reconstruction surgery), I am feeling a little sore. So today, it’s a light touch: I undertook my carpet putting drill - 3 balls, must get min of 2 out of 3, on 4 occasions. I did this from 5ft then 12 foot.

I couldn’t resist hitting some balls in my practise area: 58 degree wedge, half swing, then finished off with a couple of full shots with my 8i and driver - just to check on my swing.

Day 401

Waited for it to warm a little this morning.

Just an easy morning hitting chips, and pitches, using my wedges.

Focuses were on reads for landing areas. Club selection for needed distances. Club face, and intermediate target alignments. Stepping into my stance, and (putt) stroking the ball.

Idea was to have the ball wind up in, or near the targeted hole. .

Day 402

Another glitch I guess. Day 401 was waiting for me this morning even though it posted up (I thought) yesterday. Look like it posted up anyway. This has happened before.

So this morning I took the extra 1/2 mile drive to putt on unfamiliar practice greens. These are also larger greens with more undulations than my home course offers up.

Focus was on two, or less putts per pin. This included reads, club face alignment with my intermediate target, and rolling the ball the distances required. My back stroke controls the distance I see that is needed

These practice greens offer very few straight putts, unless the ball is with 3-5 feet of most of the pins. Most of my putts were in the 10-15 foot range, which is the distance between the various pins.

Weather was a bit on the chilly side, which also meant the practice area was pretty empty. Probably going to play 18 holes later.

Day 359 - February 7, 2019 - Hit a number of 8-irons today. Felt good about the backswing, and the space at the top. Downswing was a bit steep… because the lower body wasn't moving forward quite as much, but the last three adding that was good.

Day 209

By AZ standards it was freezing today!

When I got to my car for a morning appointment, I had to use my credit card to scrape frost off the windows!

By early afternoon, when I took out the clubs, I still got a little bit of sting on some shots from the coolness.  I did get a chance to go through the bag and I got some pleasing results, except for the area of distance.  And then, even that was solid when they all fell somewhat short of the expected distances by 10% or so.  Driver a bit more so and wedges and 3h and 4h not at all.  As I do not plan on playing many rounds at 46º, I was happy.

One question though the practice was how much was due to my somewhat slower ball speeds and was any of that due to the fact that I was hitting the mighty range balls.  In the end, I decided that did not matter.  OK, the results were down a bit, but if that were taken on the course as opposed to a round at the range where I often overanalyze everything, I would have felt solid.  I probably would have ended up over 100 for a round due  the fact I may have needed about 8-10+ strokes to cover shorter hits from strikes that looked and felt good.  I would have done a post mortem on the round and went home and said, it was good for the day.

Any day when my 3h was a very strong club is a good day.

Round has been postponed until Saturday, so I will probably spend good amount of time tomorrow checking out if my putter is still sleeping in to stay warm.

Range is having a demo of the G410 driver from Ping so I may spend some time drooling over that!

Day 403

Spent some time on the range this morning. Weather is good. Chilly, but good.

Alternated through my bag with the various clubs, using different length swings.

Main focus was on watching initial ball flightswhich showed me what I needed to know about my set up, and swings.

Most likely will play 18 holes later on today.

DAY 448   Stuck in the house today... so spent time in my home office, working with my shortened club on positions in the swing.  Then time in the doorway working on turning back and through versus swaying.

Day 210

Warmed up to a somewhat balmy 66 today so  took the chance to do a number of items.

First, before I ventured out I did 30 minutes of indoor putting, working on keeping and even speed and not speeding up after impact.  As a result, I was more consistent  in the 6' and 4' range.  Longer than that, I often left the putt a bit long.  I was feeling good about that and continued for 20 more minutes when ( got to the practice green.  Far from perfect, but I am getting a better feel for speed all the time.

After that, I decided to spend time with 50º, 56º, 60º and 9i shots.  All of the shots were, for the most part, better on line with the target.  What I was practicing more than anything else was expected distance at 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 swings.  I rarely take a full swing with any of these clubs so that I am able to control line and distance more.

The best results seemed to come for 1/2 swings.  I got predictable loft and range with them.  I tried to get the plays to reveal what I am most able to do with them.  I am currently using the 9i as an extension of my wedge set.  For 110 - 40 yards, I feel that I am making solid strides into trusting these weapons.

Spent a bit of time with 4h to make sure I am hitting the club at a good angle to the ball.  Got some good shots off with no topping of the ball.

Then after a quick look at clubs on demo at the range, I went off in search of a nice cup of coffee.

    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
    • What simple fact? A golf match is not a coin flip — there is a fact for you. I'm trying to help you, and you're throwing out what could easily be called sour grapes. Come with FACTS, not weak analogies. Then you've got nothing. Hopefully they've done a better job of making their case. 😛
    • It's pretty close. The odds of a 50/50 shot going your way 21 times are greater than 1 in a million!  I guess your point is, that simple fact is not enough to declare these guys dirty rotten sandbaggers. I disagree, but fair enough. I posted it here on the message board to get different perspectives, after all.  I probably won't be digging further into specific scores. I have no dog in this fight beyond a generalized contempt for sandbagging. With that said, it would not surprise if a lot of clubs shared my concern and were grousing about it to the SCGA.
    • I had an article on Cam Smith pop up along with this..... Current major eligibility list for all LIV Golf players Here's a look at which majors, if any, all LIV Golf players are eligible.
