Day 152: Crying while doing full swing mirror work because of the snow storm we got today. 😞 Anyways, worked on keeping my head back after transition. Like how it's coming a lot.

Day 5.  15 quarter-shots, this time with a 56 degree.  I hit a few poorly early on and realized I was going at full speed, possibly faster.  I consciously slowed down.  Off a mat, indoors, into a net, real balls.  I believe I will have to try to be consciously slow tomorrow when I take a friend to the range (and do some of my own practice in the process) -- see tomorrow's entry (when it happens).

Day 435

A little breezy this AM. Worked on 30, 40, and 50 yard shots. Not that I hit the shots those exact yardages, but close is good enough. I use three flags from my set up position to get those yardages.

Took my time between each shot. I used three wedges, with various back swings. I hit 14 retired game balls, 5 times. (70)

Focus was on acquiring my target line, picking out out my intermediate target on that line, setting the club face square to the intermediate target, then stepping into the shot.

I make sure my feet, knees, hips, and shoulders are aligned properly (for me), and then swing along my shoulder line. This set up usually sends the ball towards my intended target. A miss directed shot is still not that far off line.

Day 6.  Took a friend & co-worker (one person) to the range this morning.  I did some full swing work on the range, did some chipping (my slow from yesterday produced some nice chips), and some putting too.

DAY 481   Headed out to the range after lunch to work on two drills to help me improve my backswing (amount of sidebend) and starting the downswing with my left side.   Did this for a little over an hour and felt good about the progress.   Then headed over to the chipping green and hit both 7 irons (using the Paul Runyan approach) and PW wedges to help me with my ryhthm.  Spent about 45 minutes in this area before heading home.

Day 246

Wonderfully clear and mildly cool day for a once through the bag practice.  As a whole, I was pleased with a most of the day.

Started out with ALL of the wedges, including my clipper.  Only iffy one was my 60º.  Lobs   good but tended to have too much roll upon landing and a little too much off of the aim both left and right.  Heck, I would have been happy with the results during the round; this sense of off was only in relation the the other clubs.

9i and 7i were as I planned. I was able to adjust the 9i to between 90 yards and 120 yards a I planned.  One hook out of no where but the other 15 or so swacks looked good.  It was the best 7i day I have had, both off the turf and tee. After these clubs I took about 10-15 minutes away from the hitting area.

On to the hybrids: I was shocked by my 3h.  Best yardage and loft from the get go, good direction with only a soft draw.  I stopped after 10 hits and moved on.

Same result with the 4h. Great loft and distance and the ability for holding aim.

Between both clubs, I feel confident with these clubs in long iron situations.

So the gods of golf had to mess with me with my 5h. Topped a few of the first couple of hits and I got a few pushed and/or pulled results.  So I sat again for 10 minutes. Upon return I decided I was trying to hard to get great results. I made sure grip was my favored hybrid gip, addressing and stance was back to my basics for these clubs and simply relaxed and let fly.  The end results were "where the hell was that 20 minutes ago?"

I took this mindset to my off the tee 7i/w, Gx-7 and G5 driver and the results were more than acceptable.  Yes, the 7i/w was better that expected by a LOT and the GX-7 was a bit more of a fade, but very playable and the Ping G5 Driver proved every this from a soft draw to a pull that I pray a move to the G410 Plus will allow me to correct.  BUT these results on this day tell me to relax and stop over hitting! 215 yards on line and good rolls. The more I trusted the clubs the more I liked the results.

Damn, golf is an easy game!

Day 404 - March 14, 2019 - Worked for about eight minutes on the transition after my workout. Done well in slow motion the clubhead stays open, done at speed it kicks around the corner in plenty of time to just be a little draw. Yes, this is now about the seventh year in a row I've basically worked on this same thing. But… like I keep saying… getting better all the time.

Day 153: Doing some full swing mirror work. Working on keeping my head back on the downswing. Think I've got a good feel for this. Going to hit up the simulator tomorrow, play a round, and then work on some stuff, too.

Day 159, March 15, 55F

Went to the range and did a simulated round after warming up. Went pretty well. Tough to evaluate ball flight because the balls lookd like they were sanded down with wear. But contact was good. Finished with partial wedges.

Day 436 (continuous)

Played 18 holes this AM. Carded an 81 with 29 putts. 9 pars, and 9 bogies. 3 of the putts were one putts for par, with one being around 9-10 feet. Pretty pleased with that one.

Golfed with a couple of old guys, that I have seen out here before. I was a walk on, and they seemed a little miffed I was added to their twosome. No big deal, as I played better than them. Damned eletists...lol

I played with my 12 iron bag. My driver was an old Nickent 4W I tend to hit pretty well.  I took the time on a few occassions to try to  hit draws with my longer clubs. I do this using my normal nuetral grip, a slightly closed club face, and a closed stance. A more closed stance than the club face was closed. I then just swing along my closed shoulder line. I even tried this with a slightly open club face. Some balls drew more than others. Some even went reasonably straight. Others faded a little. I am not a consistent worker of ball flights, but made some mental notes. .

That said, most of my set ups were a square, to my intermediate target line, club face, and a bottom to to top square stance. This is my stock set up, and shot.

DAY 482   Headed to the range late in the morning and spent a couple of solid, focused hours on working through three drills to help me with my backswing AND initiating my downswing with my lower body AND staying in posture.  Making some solid progress.  If the weather holds up, I am looking to play Sunday afternoon and see the impact of all my work.

Day 154: Went to the simulator today. Played 18 holes at Royal Birkdale - shot 75 without really considering putting at all. Or the rough that I hit into 😆. But then I got some more game planning data - I have all my clubs now. And then I spent about 20 minutes working on my priority piece. I was hitting things a bit of the toe, but I was doing better as the session went on. Good work today. Too bad there's snow on the ground, though...

Day 247:

Same routine as yesterday, looking for consistency.

Result was very, very good. Even the 4h and 5h came to play.  Almost all of the shots from all the clubs stayed within the "fairway" I designed in my mind. Distances were well within the expected range.  Lofts were good, except my 3h, though I am not worried about it as distance was good.

Only ONE slice, but it seemed to be the result of my stance.  I seemed to have aimed it that way.  After this error , I concentrated on the aim and making sure I was setting up square to the ball and the aim. The next hit with the driver was well aimed and, for me, nice and long with very solid ball speed: 110 mph and 228 yards.  The remaining 7 shots with the big whacker were not as long and ended with the now common draw.  All were in my fairway target.

Ok, the slice was god awful and clearly my fault. I am not going to come back to the range overly worried about one god awful shot. I will, however, spend my next session with the good old alignment rods, making sure I understand foot aiming better.

Match on Sunday to see if I can take what I now do to the game.

Day 405 - March 15, 2019 - Played golf with @GolfLug and Brad. GAME GOLF sucks right now - won't upload my round from my iPhone Xs - so I'm stuck waiting for it to post it.

We played at Totteridge. Nice place.

    • On my car I got the extended power train warranty. I do read the fine print most of the time. Though at now 37, my eyes aren’t what they were 10 years ago.    The problem with most of these extended warranties on electronics and appliances is you don’t register the warranty with the place you buy the warranty from, which I’ve always found strange. Unless it’s GameStop then you know Alina drops her Switch in the next two years and the screen cracks they’ll replace it. No questions asked.    You buy a slow cooker at Walmart for $50 and the extended warranty is say $6, you have to go through a third party to register your product for the warranty, and it’s pretty damn annoying. Target is the same way. Anything you buy the extended protection on you have to go through a third party.    Why do retailers go through a “broker” for warranties? Because they don’t wanna deal with it? They make me talk to someone from another country, that I can barely understand, when I need my warranty fulfilled.   Sorry for the rant.
    • You may be able to find a regular flex Blueboard on the second hand market. I’m little more than half your age so I swing a shaft that launches pretty low so I don’t have a lot of experience with Regular flex (other than when I try to hit it I miss way to the left).    There are other shafts, such as the newer Ping Alta that I’ve heard good things about. And one that no one talks about. The Jupiter shaft. You can get this shaft for a $100 with a grip and your Ping adapter installed. I was talking to the golf manager at Dick’s Sporting Goods here and he has one in his driver and has nothing but good things to say about it. I thought about getting one for my Paradym Triple Diamond to play it a little shorter, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

    • Meanwhile, another old Tour Edge guy switches to Callaway for this season. I have a different problem, course dependent set-ups. What I’m wondering is if @dragonsmhas the 8 iron set 5-PW, AW, GW or just 5-PW, GW. Because the PW is 42°, AW 47°, and GW 52°. Because that could potentially be a gap there. The 5-iron to 6-iron length jump is 5/8” instead of 1/2” so you should be careful of that.    @WUTiger the problem most people have with 3-woods is they don’t play them far enough back into their stance. And they usually don’t have enough loft and the shaft is too long. So 3HL, 4 or 5-wood is probably better for most golfers. I do the “Frankenwood” approach. I have both the 3+ and 5 woods. I typically will either add two degrees to the 3+ on 6600 yards or longer courses, or take a degree off the 5-wood on shorter courses than 6300 or so, and use the 5-wood shaft for both. I don’t usually find a situation where I need both the 3 and 5 wood on a course. I don’t play from 7000 yards it’s no fun. Edit: I mostly agree with @WUTiger on the gapping, although a lot of the newer even fixed hosel fairway woods are made better than what we had when we were playing the old Exotics XRails.
