"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge

Day 438

I see my day 438 post was waiting for me this morning. I don't know what's going on with that. I post these things, they show posted, then the next morning there it is like it was never posted. I just cleared the editor.

Anyways, I devoted this morning practice to my lob wedge. I hit lobs with it. Pitches with it. Short chips with it. Even used it in the practice bunker full very firm sand.

Lobs/bunkers I move the ball a little more forward, with an open stance. I can get 20-30 yards with a full swing. Just a high flying ball that drops pretty much straight down. My favorite short game shot when I have the opportunity to use it.

Pitches, the ball is in the middle of my stance, with my normal stance. I practice this shot, but I very seldom use my lw for pitches. I have other clubs I am better at for pitches.

Shorter chips, the ball is still center stance, but I am using my putting stroke. This upright stance lifts the heel of the club off the ground, while lowering the toe. I contact the ball towards the toe of the club. I adjust my stance, and the club face to hit my landing area. Stubbing the club toe before ball contact has never been a problem.

My normal full swing distance is near 60 yards with my lw. Again, I have other clubs that are easier to hit that 60 yards with.

Day 15:

Longer range session today. Hit balls through the bag, and then focused a lot of my driver and 3wood. Hit driver ok (though had some interesting pulls), and my 3W wasn't good at all. Work in process.

Day 250:

Another milestone, but a day with no wild celebratory breakthroughs!

Limited in part because I was going to play a quick 9, my pre-round warm-ups consisted first of my standard physical warm-ups.  Then, as we still had about 35-40 minutes before our time, I hit a few off the tee and some off of the turf warm-ups.  Felt good and they proved solid in the round. Then about 10 minutes at the practice green.  Putter speed was a tad strong, but did not leave myself in any 3 putt situations. finished with a 39, best ever on this course, which is a bit too short and undemanding.

DAY 485     Got a late start, however, put in two solid hours on the range, working on increasing side bend on my backswing, and getting into better impact position, as well as getting onto my left side more.  Sometimes it just gets boring out there doing drill after drill after drill... the hope it that it will positively impact my game when I take it to the course.  All I can do is focus on the process, ... learn, fail, learn, fail, ...  just stay the course...and next thing you know is that you have moved up a level.  :-)

 Day 440

Played 18 this morning with a couple of friends, and a walk on. The walk on is now a new golf friend. Probably aa new friend period. He, and I both have alot in common, including our golf games.

Carded an 80 for my troubles. Thanks to a pretty good back 9,  37 which is one of my best 9 holes in quite a while. Made a lot of one putts having 12 putts for that back half. Great approach shots made that possible.

The front 9 was sort of a struggle. Had 18 putts, and several not so good approaches.

I suppose if I was an "excuse" kind of player, perhaps the lower early morning temps played a part between my two 9s of play. I will just own both of them, with no excuses...lol.

DAY 486   Windy, rainy and cold!!  Not the day to go outside!! So worked indoors in my office with my shortened 7 iron on getting more sidebend on the backswing, and improving my position at impact.  Lots of very slow swings to get the feels.

Day 251:

Final day of primarily putting work.  Various ranges from 4'-20' and varying paths to the cup in terms of breaks.  Timing and speed much better, especially below 10'.  I am not trying to sink 20' putts but rather working to have these putts end up as true gimmies  under 2', IF gimnmies were an actual trial thing in golf!

Over all I would give myself a B± with a closing reminder spend 20 minutes/week on this.

Day 158: Just full swing mirror work again. Working on keeping my head more steady in the backswing and keep back in transition. Think I've got a good feel for it. I'll see what it looks like on video this weekend.

Day 16:

I thought I already posted in here today but apparently not! Today I played about half of “Short Game 50”.  Practice green was too busy after that. Been switching to my sand wedge and working on picking better landing spots. Thin lies are still the death of me lol.

Day 441

Took all my drivers to the range this morning. 9.5, 10.5, and 12.0. Just want see how I was swinging them.

Focus was on a one piece take away, a smooth, easy swing into the ball, and follow through.

My 10.5, low profile, square head driver was the better of the three. No surprise there, since this is my normal gamer.

DAY 487   Went out at lunch time and spent 2 1/2 hours plus on the range working on my backswing (increased sidebend at top of swing), impact position and getting more onto my left side.   Did the basic 4 drills I have been doing for the last week.  Feeling like I am making progress.   Then headed to the putting green for 45 minutes to work exclusively with the Pelz Putting Tutor to train on starting the putt on line.

    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!
    • Do you have examples of exceptional scores versus their established handicap indexes?
    • Day 539, April 23, 2024 Mirror work once again. When I get back to swings, I'll just do it A. LOT.
    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?
