"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge

Day 282

Spent some time pitching, chipping, and putting out those pitches, and chips. Same routine as I have explained before. Use my preshot routine, and then pitch, or chip close enough for a chance at a one putt.  2 putts are acceptable as needed. 3 putts happen occassionally, and are just tolerated. 3 putts are a "just forget it, and move on" expirience.

Played 9 practice pins while alternating between pitches, and chips to various practice pins. Averaged 2.4 club/ball touches per practice pin.

Have an 11:45 am tee time later today. Going to play 18. Focus will be on some serious effort to put up a good score.

Day 25:

Yesterday was my second miss this cycle. Gotta get on a roll here. Played short game 50 today with a caveat. I played everything with a pitching wedge and tried to play low bump and run type shots. 23 holes to get 52 points. Interesting practice.

DAY 320  Spent 75 minutes around the chipping green working on my chipping technique by rotating through six drills...hitting 5 balls with each drill then onto the next drill.  Finished the session by dropping 18 balls around the green and seeing how many I could get up and down.  I was 16/18 in getting up and down!   #Hardwork starting to pay off.   Now heading to the monthly 90 minute mental training session with Bill Nelson of Mind Management Academy.

Day 13

30 minutes of indoor putting practice working on length and tempo. Very frustrating session as it felt that I couldn't hit any good strokes. I hope I can get out on the course tomorrow.

Day 92:

Focused on my "tee" clubs, 7i, 7i/w, 8i, 5h, GX7, and Driver.  I got back what I was expecting with a few mis-hits here and there. I did run off a few push hooks in a row, but I was able to eventually correct the problems using a two sticks to line up my swing.  Too much outside/in swinging and mis-hitting due to over swinging.  I will do some work tomorrow to make sure it sticks.

Over the last two days I have made some good strides towards consistency, such as eliminating topping the ball and allowing the club to do its job without my getting in the way.

Schedule for remainder of the week: Tomorrow, dealing with specific club related problems (reinforcing the last 2 days), Thursday, bunkers and putting, and Friday hitting the whole bag.

Day 33.  Resumed my Tuesday tradition of putting after work and before meeting up with friends for the usual Tuesday evening social.  Today was 20 minutes of putting (grass, real putting green, real balls, my actual putter), primarily 6' and 10' putts.  I finished though by sinking two 15' in a row, which was fun. :-)

Day 283

Worked on 100 - 150 yard shots this morning. I guess I should call them approach shots. Targets were areas between two flags down range.

I played a 9 hole, par 3 course yesterday, and missed too many greens I thought. A good reason for this morning's practice.

Focus, using my preshot routine, was on alignment, as I took my stance. That, and a well balanced swing tempo.

Day 93:

As planned, worked with clubs that gave less that excellent results yesterday and Monday. My list included: 4h, 5h, 6i GX7 and driver.  None of these were total disasters, but each had some serious inconsistency.  After an hour, they all gave better results.  Still not 100% comfortable with them, but I have serious knowledge of what I can expect and clearer understanding of what to hit when.

To me, that is what DR work is all about.  The imperfections of my game will still bite me on the ass every now and then.  Such is golf. But I am gaining knowledge on how to plan my game. LSW!!!

DAY 321  Living in the outer bands of Hurricane Michael limited my practice time today.   I was out for almost 2 hours, however, only got in about 1 1/4 hours of practice.  Came in twice due to rain showers.   Worked on my chipping technique with 7 different drills.  I hit 5 balls with each drill and repeated the process....   then threw 9 balls randomly off the green to test my ability to get up and down.  The goal is a score of 18 which translates into 1 chip and 1 putt from each of the 9 locations. I scored 19.  I chipped in once and twice I two putted...which means I got up and down 7/9 chances I had.  As I have gotten a little better with my technique and more consistent with my strike/contact, I am making the chips more and more challenging (deeper rough, a little further off the green, sharper uphill and downhill and even sidehill lies).

Day 26:

crap practice today. Wedge day. Shorter partial wedges were good, everything else up to full swing was crap. Tried slowing things down but it just wasn’t my day.

Day 249 - October 10, 2018 - Spent some time with the sand wedge today. Actually it was a found sand wedge, and I played some holes with just that club in helping my kiddo to prepare for the regional tournament in DuBois.

Day 14

Full swing practice behind the house. Working on hip rotation (I tend to over-rotate in the backswing) and sliding the hip forward in the downswing.

Day 34.  Got home from work, a little more than a dozen balls in my indoor practice area.  8-iron, setup still.

 Day 15

Got out to the club today 😀 Did a little work on irons at the range but mostly short game practice. Focus on medium and long chips and pitches. Then I finished off with 9 holes. All in all a great day!

Day 94:

For some reason my shoulders are a bit still today, so worked on 1/4 swing with my 56 wedge and 4-6' putts.  Short practice my my standards; planning on a full bag tomorrow.

Day 27:

And the crap continues. Putting practice today...didnt get a chance to do more than about 10 minutes but it was a lag putting day and I couldn't keep hardly anything within 10% of the hole. Probably 40% 3 putts.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
