Day 178, April 3

Mirror work at the gym. Focused on hip turn and transition with a bit less palmar flexion. Had a few hooks yesterday from over-cooking the flexion. My path is already pretty in-to-out, if the face closes too much I get a big hook. I also worked on opening the face more and trusting the swing.

I hope to film some work later if it is not too windy.

DAY 501   Spent 90 plus minutes practicing -- working on my backswing and staying in posture.  Then played 18 holes in a skins game.  The good news is I drove the ball well hitting 13/14 fairways, hit 10 GIR, ... the bad news is my putting SUCKED!!!  Never did adapt to the speed of the greens...   very short every time I three putted!!!   I also had 4 lipouts!!

Day 266:

Chance mainly to work on the 9i with 30 strokes of trying to hit a wide variety targets and distances.  The main goal was to gain a great feel from the club to get me comfortable with a number of options.

Day 456

Just some warming up on the range this morning. This, in preparation for an 8am tee time.

Went through my entire bag, except for my putter. The first couple of greens will let me know how to putt today.

Finished up with my driver, as that is the first tee club I will be using. (Par 5)

I am expecting a very low, in the 80s round.

Day 179, April 4

Mirror work at the gym. Focused on set up with open face and slightly open stance, then swinging out along the line the face is pointed. I will hit the range later and work on this again. I got away from it with all the work hitting into my net.

DAY 502   Spent a little more than two hours on the range continuing to work through the drills to help me rotate and now sway on my backswing, and get onto my left side sooner (by starting the downswing with my pelvis).   I do 4 specific drills to help me with this... and do them over and over again.  I do a drill for multiple air swings, then hit a ball, then back to air swings, ..... after hitting 10 balls, I move to the next drill.

Then headed over to see my coach, where we spent an hour assessing my progress on my full swing... made one adjustment and gave me a drill to help me with the followthrough.  Then worked on improving my technique with the Phil Runyon chipping technique.  Making progress.. now for a million more reps :-)

Day 267:

Only time to work on putting today.  Primarily putts of 10' and 15'.  Putts of 10' were fairly good and sank about 85% of them and usually left myself with a short tap in.  Then I moved back to 15' and my percentage dropped to to about 65%.  And that 35% missed had way too many that left me in difficult position to make in only one more putt. A little better on the second round of 15'.  This was on a practice green I do not et to play too often and I was left with reads I had not had to deal with before.  I will be doing this practice green with both putts and chips tomorrow so I will see if my chips will leave the long late breaks to be more manageable.

Day 457

Just some putting practice this morning. Same routine as always. 6 practice pins using one ball. 6 pins clockwise, 6 pins counter clockwise, and 6 pins at my discretion. Par was 36. I had 33 putts, which included 3, three putts.

All first putts ranged from 8' feet (+/-) to 25' feet (+/-).

Focuses were on reads, set up, club face aim, distance, and rolling the ball on my chosen target line. I used an intermediate on some putts for club face aim.

It was a good practice session.

Day 180, April 5, 40s

Worked on chipping and pitching and filmed for my Evolvr lesson. Then I did a few set up drills with my 7, 5, 3W and driver. Focused on opening the face, aiming the face, then setting up to that. For the swing, I focused on swing along the line the face was pointed. This seems to produce the best flight with high push draws. I filmed them to check on my positions and they looked ok.

DAY 503   A two part day!!    Spent a couple of hours on the range working through 5 drills to help me improve my backswing (internal rotation into my right hip instead of swaying) and staying in posture through my downswing.  Seem to be making progress.

Then headed to Golf Galaxy to look at the new 2019 Callaway Rogue irons.  There was no doubt in my mind that I would pick up 10 plus yards on my current irons, since technology has gotten better in 5 years, AND the lofts are a lot stronger.  Sure enough I picked up a bunch of yards over my Titleist 714 AP1s.  So I am very close to making a buying decision.   We then tested my Callaway EPIC against the new Epic Flash, and did not see much if any improvement.  My biggest issue was that I need to get my launch angle down significantly.   So learned a bunch.   AND of course if I pull the trigger on the new irons, I also need to look at the distance gap between my "new" 5 iron and my 3 wood.

Next Thursday I have another fitting scheduled with someone else....  one of the reasons is that this fitting will be outdoors.   So I can really see the impact of hitting the Rogue Irons, IF that is what works best for me.

Day 268

End of a Long and busy week!

Took aout 30 shots out of a somewhat fluffy trap with my 60º to practice getting up and out towards the hole. Results were better that before, and that what practice is all about.  I have been working on this specific touch for some time now.  We will see how it translates my next round early next week.

Day 458

Spent this morning working on "forced carries". I hit 20, and 40 yarders from the front edge of the hazard.

The carry is bunker, and 4' foot high burm next to it. The target flag is 15' feet (?) past the burm.

Options are to land the ball on the down slope, on the far side of the burm. The ball would bounce towards the flag off the burm  Or, drop the ball on the flag with a flop shot. I used both options.

Focuses were on set up, intermeadiate target, club face aim, and a good swing tempo with abbreviated swings, and follow throughs. I used my SW for most of the shots.

Balls that didn't carry far enough, rolled back into the bunker, and became hard pan, weedy, bunker practice shots. This bunker is not maintained at all. Had a couple of those critters to work with.

The burm also doubles as an uneven lie practice area. The down slopes are pretty steep.

I had good lies to work with, since the mower was in the area yesterday. Not a fairway lie, but not quite a semi rough lie either.

DAY 504  Rise and Grind...   Spent 90 minutes on the range continuing to work through my 5 drills to improve my backswing, and stay in posture through the downswing and initiate the downswing with the pelvis.   Drills, drills, drills.....

Then spent 90 minutes around the chipping green, working on my technique ... in using the Paul Runyon chipping method.   5 balls swinging with right arm only, while counting, then 5 balls with both hands on the club while continuing the counting to help my improve my tempo.

Day 181, April 6

Easy day today as I have been hitting for a. Umber of days straight and this old body needs a rest day. So just did a bit of pitching work focusing on the float load feel.

Day 269:

Finally a day where I was able to simply air it out!

50 shots with the driver and GX-7 to get the muscles flowing off the tee.

The GX-7 performed as expected. Nice shots finishing with a bit of a draw.  Averaged 185-190 with a good continuation to about 200 yards.  I did hit a few hooks but no nasty slices.  So it seemed the best day for this club in some time.

The G5 driver was more than acceptable with only one hook, which I still considered playable.  I was getting, perhaps, a bit too much loft and would have preferred distance.  Consistently about 200 yards out before touchdown, I wold have been happy with such smacks off of the tee.

Felt good, though a bit stiff afterwards, as this was the first real full out swings in about a week.

Tomorrow will focus mainly on hybrids and irons before a once through the bag on Monday before Tuesday's round.

Day 459-Range Work.

Continued on with my practice routine to see if I can gain some more yardage hitting tee'd up balls. By hitting off tees, I am saving my surgically repaired left wrist the extra wear, and tear of hitting off the turf, with a faster swing. .

Focuses were on set-up, club face alignments with an intermediate target, and staying in balance while swinging the club head a little faster than I normally do.

The whole idea of this practice regimine is to see if I can give myself shorter second/third approach shots. This to maybe save a stroke or two, here, and there.

Since I am hitting range balls that are most likely in suspect ball flight condition, eventually I will go to an open area where I can measure carry distances, while using my regular game balls.

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
    • day 34. Technique practice. Became too quick and outcome oriented. need to slow down and work on technique again.
    • Day 534, April 18, 2024 Practice before lessons today. Priority piece. No sim this time. 🙂
