DAY 505   Just hanging around the house today, catching up on rest, reading and TV.   However, I still strapped up and did the four drills I was assigned using my KPlayer.

  • Upper Body at Top
  • Rotation at Impact
  • Hip Twister
  • Hip Twister Phase II

These drills help me to  improve my sidebend at the top of my backswing and improve my pelvic rotation through the swing.

BTW -- I HAVE NO IDEA how to delete the insert below!!!  Any help @iacas would be appreciated.

Day 428 - April 7, 2019 - Putted in the hotel room while prepping for the Masters tomorrow. The floor is hard (not a carpet), so I focused on start lines.

Day 460

Worked on 50, and 80 yard shots this morning, in the the short game area. These were carry yardages, using semi retired game balls. .

Focuses were set up, club face aim, and a nice easy, in balance swing. Used my SW, and, PW.

After warming up, I hit about 30 balls at each flag.

Day 270

Despite feeling a good deal under with a respiratory infection, I took time to do some work  with my 50º and 9i,

Energy kept distances about 10% below usual runs soI focused more on how well I hit the sweet spot and kept the whack on target.

I put a contact indicator tape on each club. The results showed a hit that was well centered, but not perfect, almost every time.  Add, in good loft, if my total energy were better, it would have been a great day.

DAY 506    Rise and Grind....   today I spent 3 hours, yes 3 hours!!!  Working exclusively on my chipping using the Paul Runyon method.   Hitting balls with only my right hand, then only my left hand, then both hands.... working on getting the "hit" out of my swing.  Don't have it with my putting, however, I do on this shot.   I will over come it...

Then got home and turned on my KPlayer to do some more sets of the four drills.

  • Upper Body at Top
  • Rotation at Impact
  • Hip Twister
  • Hip Twister Phase II

These help me get more sidebend at the top and more hip rotation at impact.

Day 271:

Follow-up from yesterday as I pushed myself towards more overall energy even though I was still not at 100%.

I started off with a lot more physical warm up. The focus was on balance through the full motion of the swing.  I used a combination of the Orange Whip® and position of sticks to get a feel for start and finish.  It took a bit more time than I expected to have a good feel.  And, I had to stop every now and then to keep a solid balance.

Again, not full out shots, more like 80% with a focus on the impact tape to check for how well the strikes were inn the sweet spot.

With a few exceptions to keep me from too much of a swollen head, all indications, both on the tape and in the results, were solid. Again, my inability to take my fullest shot allowed me to focus on club position through the full swing. Direction and loft were good with out 85% of the expected distance.  I got a good sense of hand position on the club as well as other things in the grip.

I suspect I will be close to full body energy tomorrow to make sure all work with my fuller powered efforts.

Day 461

After a little warming up, I spent about 45 minutes with my chip/putt practice routine.

No big deal. From various areas around the green, l chip the ball towards a practice pin. The idea is to chip the ball in, or at least leave it close enough for a one putt. I do this using one ball.

Focuses are the  read for a landing area for the chip shot. Set up after acquiring that landing area. Using an intermediate target fo club face aim. Then using my putting stroke to chip the ball. Should the chip miss, and many do, I go through the same focuses for the putt, as I did for the chip. Maybe not the intermediate target part.

The over all goal is two average close to 2 strokes from the chipping distances. Under 2.15 is some what acceptable for me.

DAY 507     Did not get out until just after lunch time.   It was very windy so I decided to work on putting and chipping.  Spent a couple of hours on the putting green working through two drills.   25 three foot putts in a row, and then 20 putts in a row into a 3 foot circle around the hole from 20, 30 and 45 feet.  And then some random putting to various holes around the green, each putt at least 20-25 feet.  Then headed over to the chipping area.  Spent 2 more hours, hitting chips with right hand only, left hand only and then both hands.  Anyone who has played golf with me more than once, knows I have been suffering from the pitching and chipping yips for several years.  With help from my full swing coach I am committed to finding a solution to this... as it is my single largest weakness AND is the one thing that is keeping my scores up.   For example, last week when I hit 10 GIR I did not get up and down a single time...  I will be back at it tomorrow with the same committment -- fix this part of my game so I can go low!!

And yes I have the yips even when I try the Phil Runyon method of chipping. :-(

Day 272:

Back to full swings!  Mainly worked on just a solid technique to increase ball speed.

Worked with 6i, 7i/w and driver. I was able to get up to my usual ball speeds and it showed both in increased loft and distance carried.

The impact strips on the clubs showed fairly good impact close to the sweet spot, though a number of them were a bit off the toe, but not enough to throw the ball wildly so off line as to be unplayable if they were hit in a round.

Distance yardage was not the best I have ever managed.  Where I would usually be around 200 yards in flight with my driver, I was.today, 10 yards short of that, according to tracer.  Given how miserable I felt since last Saturday, I'll take it.

I was very happy taking my 71/w off of the tee.  The loft was good and shots were 175-180 with a good slight roll after impact.  This will make that perfect for the usual par 3s on the corses I play, if not slightly long.  Touch is what I lost a lot of this past week; I hope it returns quickly.

Day 462

Practiced on uneven lies this morning. Side hill lies with the ball below, and above my feet. Also those pesky uphill, and down hill lies.

Focuses were on ball placements, club face aim, matching the the bottom of club head with the slope, weight ditribution on the bottom of my feet, and choking up/down on the club as needed.

Another important focus was matching my shoulders up with the slopes. Then swinging along that shoulder line.

Club selection is also important for distances required. Especially with the up, and down hill lies.

I see these types of shots more often than not. Even some fairways have these uneven landing areas. By practicing these types of shots, I am not surprised by them, and have the knowledge to pull them off.....most of the time.

Day 185, April 10

Did Mirror work at the gym at lunch, then went to the range later to work on start direction. Still drawing the ball too much unless I open the face enough.

Day 273

Broadened my clubs today to include 6i, 7i, 9i, 7i/w, 4h,  & 5h.

Very windy today so worked on getting a good loft while keeping it down bit to be minimally affected by the gusts.

So I gripped down a bit and worried more about direction than a full distance.  Fairly happy with the results, especially with the 4h. And distances were not all that lowered. No really off the wall pulls or pushes.

Hope to be able to have a good top track before week's end.

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
