Day 19

I went to a football game at the high school that the middle school I teach at feeds into, so I worked with the weighted club inside again.  I really like using it to get into, and hold, the proper positions.  I went really slowly for the first five minutes, and then made 25 full speed swings.

Day 419

Anyone else ever have a day like this?

I had a limited time to work as I was on my way to an appointment.  Plan was to hit 15,  or, even a few more, whacks with the mighty driver before meeting my doctor for a fairly short bit of follow-up. My range allows you to use a pre-purchased card to activate the ball set up about 90 minutes before they open.  So it was time to go.

I felt forced to leave, as I could not put up with a loud, irreverent and even profoundly profane group of young gentlemen (using the term quite loosely) of, I surmised, high school age, who decided to utilize far too much foul language and invectives.

I was fairly sure of their age, as I taught HS for 47 years. They actually were screwing around in the parking lot and did not even pretend to practice; I suspect they did nothave the card which allows the machines to work in the hour and a half before the range opens. Total time they were driving through the lot was perhaps 10 minutes tops.

After I think I hit 7 or 8 shots or so,  it became clear it was time to leave, as I could not concentrate at all. I was not even sure they fully saw me.

So it was a morning dealing with "those types".  Ok, I am an old geezer, but it was not fun.

I do not blame the course as it was the actions of some, shall we say, idiots.

As I was packing up and changing my shoes, they left.  As then time was a factor for me.

I am just venting as I have been substituting for 6th grade classes this week and the behavior level I saw this morning was about the same level.

Perhaps the golf gods found a off the wall way to tell me that I need to take a deep breath, relax, and have a focused practice tomorrow.

Thus ends the sermon from your favorite curmudgeon!

Day 125.  45 minutes worth of putting.  Did two around-the-clock from 6' (the version where I have to make each number eventually, not consecutively).  I then did attempts at around-the-world (where I need to make all 12 consecutively) from 3', and got to 11 at one point.  Course was closing for the night so I didn't get a chance to get to 12.

Day 20

Got to go outside the the "swing lab" and spent a half an hour hitting my old Ram blades.  The work I've put in with the weighted club has really paid off, because my contact was really solid and my swing is really starting to feel automatic.

I hit six, eight, and four irons, and caught all of them really crisp.  None were fat, and only the first two were thin.  Everything else felt really flushed.

Day 420

The day I hoped for yesterday.

Early AM to get in 25 driver drives.

Average speed was some of my best, 110

Without adding extra yardage for the stiff range balls, I was about 205.

No arm of hand tension, good turning of hips and follow through.

No fat or thin shots,  a few pushes, but nothing gawd awful.

Now to figure out how to take all this off the range so I can win friends and influence people.

Day 126.  Ten minutes of wedges, about seven of which were right handed (did a few left handed too, mostly for fun).  Indoors, off a mat, into a net, both foam and real balls.

Will be packing up the golf room soon for about two months so it's good to get this in while I can!

Day 329, Sept 8

My latest Evolvr lesson basically said stay the course. So today I worked  on my PP in to my net with PW, 7 iron and driver. At A4, a little press with my left index finger then smooth transition with palmar flexion. Get hips to rotate through impact.

After impact, maintain spine angle and don’t let wrists roll over until >A9, or at least that feel.

With each club, I started with short 1/4 swings and worked up to full length but less than full speed.

Day 127.  Went to a nearby course for a bit of morning practice before social plans today.  10 minute pitching with my 58 (real balls, off real grass, to a real green) and then I got to spend half an hour putting on a freshly rolled putting green! :-)  No excuses now Shindig.

Did the 6' drill (make from every clock position, not necessarily consecutively).  Made 6/12 first go around, 3/6 second, 2/3 third, and then made the last one on my fourth attempt.  It felt bad, but it was an over 50% rate from 6', which is really good.

I then did from 4' and made about the same numbers, wtf.

Day 21

Today, I was able to double dip.  Worked on slow motion positions with the weighted club, focusing on my takeaway.  Then I went outside and hit balls into the net.  Contact felt really solid, especially when I verbalize my "back-to-target... face the target" swing-thought.  I find that it takes my mind off the ball, and focuses it on my target, which keeps me from hitting "at" the ball.  When I am focused exclusively on the target, my contact is much better.  I know that the the pros and low caps on here know this, but the high caps like me struggle with this concept.  Slowly, as I get more consistent with my mental approach, my ability to focus on the target and simply swing the club is really improving.

I have to admit that I am really getting excited about my game.  I just need to make sure that I take this consistency to the course.

Day 421

I must be doing something right.

20 dutiful driver events were such that , I almost dare say, I may know what I a doing; at least, for this week I do.

It is amazing how much not forcing a club and the swing often gets me far better results.  My speeds today were some f the best in terms of consisItency. Distance was solid, 200+ yards with god following role.

I had only one push right.  I was a but upset at first, but then came to understand, if that were a drive at the course scheduled next, it would have probably ended up in the second cut of rough at worst! Heck, I have seen many a pro do that as well.

Except for that miscreant whack, I somehow got, primarily, a nice draw.

Now, I cannot state all was glorious today. While my 6i was good with only one rather than shot, my 3h was lacking both loft and distance. I need to spend either time mastering my 3h, or seriously take a look the value of this particular club. (My coach had suggested that the Karsten 3h design might be the reason as it does not, in most respects, match design of my other bride. When we next meet, I will try out a 3h at the G400 line)

Day 1

Spent 10 minutes working on chipping onto the practice green earlier today and then tonight spent about 15 minutes tonight working on hitting with a "correct" grip.  After my first lesson I dont think I understood exactly what the instructor was talking about and was holding the grip in my palm as opposed to the fingers.  Will probably work on this for the next week or so until I can get it to become more automatic.

Day 33: Worked on my long game feels for a bit tonight. I think I'm losing the little move off the ball when I'm playing. Got to focus a little more on it when I'm playing for real. Anyways, seemed better tonight.

Day 422

As promised (to my self at lest) it was an intimate day with me and my 3h.

I was very much able to make good full contact, and, I was able to get decent distance.  However, good loft was almost not appearing as it should.  Most only rose 8-10' above the planet.

I made sure the angle of the club was proper for the club at address.  I made a slight adjustment so that my grip was a bit more strong to keep it a bit more open.

Again, solid contact but no great loft.

As I stated, Karsten hybrid is not the same design as my other, more reliable 4h and 5h. The reality is this one does not have the dragonfly design normally found in Pings and the face is not made of the same resilient materials.

SO tomorrow, I will be looking at a replacement to try out. Great thing about this range is that one is allowed to test any club in the store.  I will look at all the 3h in stock from new G400 and G410 as well as some older models if they are in the used club section.  I am simply looking to find a more consistent club to save one or maybe two strokes a game on the longer courses I play.

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
