"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge

Day 40:

Yesterday was my second missed day in the last 28. Still got life lol. Heavy rains and a busy day at work made for only 5 minutes of work on my backswing feel and alignment.

Day 48.  After yesterday's cop-out, I feel a lot better having spent some real time on full swings (indoors, off mat, real balls, into a net).

Day 298

Got in some putting practice on these new (to me) greens in preparation for a 9am tee time.

Focus was on the speed of these greens. They seem to be a bit slower than what I am use to. Hit about 20+/- lag putts, and worked on 10'-15'  putts at practice pins.

I will be hitting my driver a little later just prior to our tee  time.

Day 106:

Nice cool (for AZ) with no schedule of events.  So I did not need to rush through my golf routines.  Good physical warmups then off to the DR.  Started out with 50º and 56º wedges, swinging easy with a 9-3 motion.  Felt great!  And what was amazing is that I hitting both with great loft and accurate distance. Were the golf gods trying to tell me quit over swinging the damned weapon?

Moved on to my 4h.  Ok but a topping of the ball started manifesting itself. Foot and ball position were fine, but for some reason I was popping up and the last minute.  Also became aware that my hand position was WAY ahead of the swing at impact.  Way too much chapping on the swing.

So I sat down, took some deep breaths and thought through what makes a fine swing with this club. Hands were WAY ahead of the club at impact and I was looking for where the ball had gone well before I followed through.  Lots for me to correct but I was able to change and started really hitting with this club well.

By the time I switched to my 5h and then driver, topping the ball was eliminated.

Driver was more than acceptable, with an oh so lovely soft fade.  Most had fine loft and even the ones that did not were straight with good distance.

Later today I will go through the 5sk on head position.

Day 14: Mirror work on my swing again today. Working on that feel in the downswing to shallow it out. Going to take a look at it tomorrow on film I think.

Day 299

Just chipping, and short pitching (<40 yards) practice this morning. Main focus was on just getting loose, and keeping my body use to swinging a golf club. I did have a target to aim at.

I have played more than a few rounds on this current journey, so serious practices is not a priority right now. October is usually my restful,  take it easy, and  regroup for my next 12 months of golf month.

Just swinging a club, any club, every day, keeps me in decent golf swing shape.

Day 42:

Range day today. Warmed up with PW, 7I, and 4H and hit the a ball great with my feels and alignment sticks. Spent the rest of the practice hitting random clubs and random targets trying ti simulate course shots. I had much less success at this. I hit some great shots sure, but hit some really bad ones too. Starting hitting the ball fat very few shots or so as well. Meh.

Day  One Hundred and Seven!

Solidified some actions, primarily with the 4h, making sure I was not raising up on my left shoulder too soon on the down swing.  No topping of the ball at all.  Results were shots in the 150-160 range, good loft and reasonably in the line I aimed them at.  Nice easy strokes helped as well.  I am impressing no one and hurting my game if I try to smash all shots into the next county!

Day 49.  Skipped October 25, still within regulation though.  Today I hit a dozen pitches after work (UW, half swings, real balls, mat, into net, indoors).  In a rare difference, I had a drink while doing so :  anniversary of my grandfather's passing.  He enjoyed golf, but I took up the sport well after he wasn't able to play (or do much of anything) anymore.  This is one of two days a year I have his favorite drink (not one high on my list).  I generally tried to do something golf-related on this day anyway

    • I would never do the extended warranty on the $50 slow cooker.  I also routinely reject the extended service plans on those toys we buy for the grand-kids.  I do consider them on higher cost items and will be more likely to get one if the product has a lot of "Electronic Tech" that is often the problem longer-term.  I also consider my intended length of ownership & usage.  If my thought is it would get replaced in 2-3 years then why bother but if I hope to use it for 10 years then more likely to get the extension. I did buy out a lease about a year ago.  Just prior to the lease end date the tablet locked up and would not function.  I got it repaired under the initial warranty and would not have bought it out if they had not been able to fix it since IMO once electronic issues start in a car they can be hard to track down & fix.  They did fix it but when I bought out the lease I paid up for the extended warranty the would cover electronic failures because my intent is to keep that car for another 8-10 years and I just do not trust the electronics to last.  Last week the touch screen went black and was unresponsive.  It reset on the 2nd time I restarted the car but that is exactly how the last malfunction started.  I fully expect to have a claim on that on repair under the extended warranty.  I do not recall the exact cost to fix last time since I did not pay it but I think it was @ $700-$800 and I suspect that will be higher next time.
    • Have you looked at Model Local Rule F-9 Relief from Tree Roots in or Close to Fairway?  You could extend this to cover exposed rocks.  The rule is recommended to be used only for areas relatively near the fairway, a player who hits a shot 20 yards in the woods doesn't really deserve relief.   Players can always take Unplayable Ball relief, they're not required to play it from a rock or a root.  Of course, they hate to take the penalty stroke too.
    • I agree with @klineka, you're clearly doing something right.  Its always going to be a bit of a guessing game if you don't have any scoring history.  On the other hand, understanding that it takes only 54 holes to establish an actual handicap, and they have about 6 weeks in which to play and post enough scores, I don't think its at all unreasonable to require them to have an official handicap before they become eligible for prizes.  I don't know how you structure the fees for the series of competitions, but if its possible they'll play with the group without being eligible for prizes, you could consider a way to let them do that without contributing to the prize pool.
    • I run tournaments and want to put in a local rule that allows relief from tree roots and rocks that are not loose impediments. We have some really terrible lies in some of our courses in my area and nobody is getting paid enough to break clubs. Let me know if you think the verbage for this rule makes sense. Local Rule Roots and Rocks You may move your ball from a tree root or buried rock one club length for free relief no closer to the hole. However you may not use this rule to get relief from a tree, bush, boulder, or other foliage hindering your swing. Your only option here is to play it as it lies or take an unplayable for a one stroke penalty.
    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
