Day 62, August 20

Mirror work at the gym. Focused on alignment and wide to narrow feel in the backswing/downswing. Will hit balls later hopefully.

Day 33: 

20+ minutes at the range today. Hit a small bucket of balls. Used my alignment stick training aid for my OTT move, but my swing thought was sliding my hips to start the downswing. I think (ok I know) that I have been rotating my hips too early in the downswing nd not getting enough lateral movement, and thus kicking the club out in front of me. My swing thought and training aid worked wonders for my swing today. I will keep engraining and swinging slow and focused as necessary.

Day 232

I have a pretty good weekly routine for my daily practices. I taxi my two youngest Grand Daughters to school. After dropping them off, the golf course is just a couple of blocks away. On weekends, I just go to the course for practice, and breakfast. Golf practice basically get my day started. I am writing this while in the club house right now..

Today it was putting practice, on the course's practice green. They provide a 40X20 foot green, with 6 practice pins. The pins are between 10-12 feet apart from each other. There are some, shorter straight putts available, but this green definitely has some slopes to deal with. Some subtle, and some very noticeable. There are also some up hill, and down hill putts available

After warming up, today's focus was on reads, alignment, back stroke, and ball speeds. These are my four building blocks to a successful putt.

Using one ball, it was 6 pins clockwise, 6 pins counter clockwise, and 6 pins mixed up. My par is 36 strokes. I treated every putt just as I would when playing for a score. Even waiting for another golfer to move out of my way a few times. Had 33 putts, with no three putts. It was a great practice session for me. (A-)

After my 18 pin practice round was done, I hit some very long (30 footers) putts just for lag purposes. Idea was to stop the ball close to the hole, using the same focuses as I discussed above. The number I was looking for was 5' feet, or less from the hole. (C+)

DAY 271    Spent a couple hours on the range working through three drills -- hitting wedges and my 7 iron.  All drills are designed to help me keep my head steadier and to move more to my left side on my downswing.   I seem to be making some progress... though it is slow. :-)

Then spent 30 plus minutes on the putting green with two separate drills.  The first one is making 10 putts in a row from 3, then 4 and finally 5 feet.  I chose a portion of the green with a lot of slope (4% slope for you Aimpointers!)  Then did 2 sets of lag putts using 10 balls in each set... randomly dropped balls from 25-75 feet.  Ended up with 1 one putt and 1 three putt.

Finally out to the course for some more practice/testing.   I have been listening to Cordie Walker who does several podcasts.  And he offered a challenge for shooting par from 150-250 yards in 2 yard increments.   The score you are trying to achieve is 4 from each distance.  You play nine holes from 150 and see if you were able to shoot 36.  Then you do the same from 175, .....    While score is important, the most important is reviewing your round and determining what impact it might have for your practice.

So I decided I would start at 100 yard and also do 125 today, then later in the week 150-175...  AND I would modify the approach in two ways, first start at a closer distance and second set my par as 3 versus 4.   So my par for 9 holes is 27.   I will go into detail in another post about why I chose 27.

Here is the results: 

From 100 yards I was 9/9 in GIR and shot 25.  My proximity to the hole was 23.2 ft.

From 125 yards I was 2/9 GIR and shot 30. For the 2 greens I hit my proximity was 24.5 ft.   This percentage of GIR was no where near my average from lots of rounds in my Game Golf app.  The greens at my new club are much smaller than the ones I am used to playing on.... and I was also having some ball contact issues.   So work to do!!

I know a guy who does that par from 150 + yards idea. Only difference is he plays this on a par three course near his home. He assigns 4 strokes to each hole, and calls it his short game practice.

Day 44

Spent my morning chipping on to a practice green, both from <5 yards and from  soft green side top.  It was my best practice on this to date, even got to focus on the follow up putts.  I must admit I got tired as the last 20 minutes or so the quality faded fast.

Day 6

Played today in my league. Driver got me in a lot of trouble. Chipping and pitching were also not very good. Played to my average, but won my match, 3 and 2.

Day 27

Hit 25 and 50 yard pitch shots out of the rough at lunch. 

Went to the putting green after work and hit some chips with the LW. Worked on putting from 4, 6 and 8 feet.

Day 77.  After reviewing my video yesterday, I did not send it to evolvr as I had clearly not accomplished what I set out to do.  I went back to swinging slowly indoors today.  Three dozen balls, indoors, slowly, 7-iron, mat, into a net.

Playing 18 today on a 9 hole course. It will be fun to get a second chance at a hole!

Day 233

This morning, it was was all about uneven lies. By that I mean hitting balls above, and below my feet. Also hitting balls off uphill, and down hill lies. 

Focus on the uphill/downhill lies was ball placement in my stance, and matching my shoulder line to the slope. From there it was just putting a good swing on the ball. Club selection comes into play on these shots relative to the distance needed. Less lofted clubs for the uphill lie, and more lofted clubs for the downhill shots. 

For the balls above/below my feet, focus was on a balanced toe/heel stance, choking up, or down on the club, and aim points. Balls above my feet tend to curve left, while balls below my feet tend to curve right. The loft of the club used will determine how much the ball will move left, or right. These are usually sweeping swings for me to avoid the heel, or toe of the club head from digging into the turf. I also manipulate the lie angle of the club with a slight grip change. 

I was some what limited to which clubs I could use due to distance restrictions, but my set ups are basically the same for all clubs used. Since there were no pins to aim at, I used my bag/trolley for a target on the various types of shots I hit. I have to have a target on any practice shot, or putt I hit. Without a target, it's not practice.

Day 45

Putting day.  While the practice green at my DR s fast with gentle breaks on artificial turf, I decided to first do the pins in order with two balls.  I counted ONLY the ball that took the most puts and wrote it down as the"score to beat" when I took a second round of the same balls, but I now only used one ball.  I improved by 4 putts over all but on 2 holes, I ended 2 puts MORE than the previous round.  Tomorrow, I will play this game on a more undulating practice green with real grass.  On to making my thoughts of speed and line a bigger skill.  If I can get to an average of 2 putts per hole, I may go and buy myself a beer!

DAY 272   Spent 2 plus hours on the range working through my full swing drills - focused on keeping my head steadier, and moving onto my left side more on the downswing (AKA less hanging back!! :-) ).

Then played 9 holes from 125 and 150 yards.

I shot 29 from 125 yards with 4 GIR  Which is an improvement over yesterday when I shot 30 with only 2 GIR

I shot 30 from 150 yards with 2 GIR.

No three putts in the last 36 holes of this practice regimen.  I just need to continue improving my ball striking so I can hit more GIR and improve my scrambling since I am 9/19 or 47% which is pretty good but I know I can do better since my misses are generally within 5 yards of the green.     Tomorrow maybe try 150/175??

Day 34: 

Played 9 holes of short game golf. -2 Bogey golf. 22% scrambling rate, with no doubles. If only I could replicate that on the course! Then spent another 20+ minutes hitting various different wedges trying to be able to hit my landing spots around the greens.....I typically carry my desired landing spot by a few yards. I wondering if I am too armsy?

Day 7

Played 18 today, went to the range to warm up, hit about half of my small bucket well, some fatties. I shot 85, had one 8 on a par 5, cranked the first one ob. I hate hiting 3 off the tee then 3 putt. came back par, birdie and par.
