"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge

Recommended Posts

Day 3   Up early and at the range by 7:30..

Warmed up with the Gold Flex, then worked through the Mach 3 protocols for the Jet Stick...  just trying to improve my swing speed.

Then went through 23 different drills from "Train for Golf Like an Olympian".   Started on page 174 and continued to 178.  The predominance of the drills were Motion Drills which focus on developing balance, stability, strength, rhythm, tempo, speed and overall hand-eye coordination.  I also did several Club Awareness drills which focus on positions in the swing and awareness of where the club face is.

As part of improving my swing speed, I hit 25 drivers.  Continued with 10 drivers off the deck to work on maintaining my posture, and then 25 left handed swings in preparation for having it videoed as part of the Challenge.

The day is early so maybe some more work later..... but I got my WAY MORE than 5 minutes in.

Day 338

Played 18 early this morning. First round after working on having a better tempo. Still get quick on more shots than I’d like, but pretty satisfied. My tempo was actually better on the more difficult shots (weird lies, tight tee shots, etc.) compared to easier shots so I’m encouraged.

Week 4 Day 1

yump another weekend with no drills or hitting balls, so restarting at Day 1.

54 minutes hitting off of the mat, 40 shots total.  Worked on 8i, 6i, PW, 3Utility & Driver.  Started with 5 of each then rotated after each shot between clubs for 2 sets.  Finished with Driver hitting 5 shots.

The plan is to do my S&C work out after work.  Happy that I am keeping consistent during the week and building week by week.  Need to figure out the weekends to get back to a solid 30+ straight days

DAY 4    Went to the local range today, since my club is closed on Mondays... and it was TOO crowded, and I learned that the Head Pro had been home quarantining due to COVID - 19.  So I drove right back out of the parking lot.

Spent 20 minutes in my office hitting putts down a 3 foot ruler.  Worked on making sure I could hit the ball down the ruler.... when I can do this with high consistency 19/20 then I am confident I can do it on the course, and not think at all about my stroke... it is all about distance at that point (after I have selected the starting line).  Also it helps me mentally since if I have a three foot putt, I am confident I can make it if I start it on the proper line AND sometimes I visualize the ruler between my ball and the hole... so it is just like at home... putting down the ruler.

Day 2 - Week 4

Got a nice range session in this morning hitting into the net. I started documenting my last 3 range sessions so I can be methodical this off season in working thru my entire bag and not just hitting what I feel like in a given day.

Today I hit 5 shots of each in order 7i, 5W, 9i, 5i, 48* and then I hit 10 shots with my Driver.  Hopefully after work I can get another session in.  If so then I will add it to this post

DAY 5   Up early and at the practice area by 7:15.   I did the Monday drill sequence of 17 drills from "How to Train for Golf Like an Olympian" focusing on the Motion and Clubface Awareness drills.  Then hit a dozen shots left handed with a 5-iron.

Headed over to the putting green, to hit a lot of putts left-handed, then did a distance control drill with putts from 30-70 feet. For this drill, I drop a ball at 30-40-50-60-70 feet from the hole.  Then after I have putted each one... I total the distance that all 5 are from the hole.  The goal is 18 feet.  I selected a hole that was downhill and putting across a 3% slope.  I did this drill six times.... with scores ranging from 14-22 feet.   4 1/2  hours later I am home!!

Day 42: Went to a local course to practice at the range and almost no one was there. So I played 18 in 2 hours. I did skip two holes to get around a foursome in carts, who were slow.

Day 324 - November 17, 2020

I'm giving myself a break today because my SI joint (or something) is completely out of whack and any movement in my back results in a whole lot of pain, so I spent the day reviewing videos and doing a good bit of work on my golf swing that way. I took notes and have a short list of important things to key on moving forward.

Day 1

Finally back doing the golf thing. Without going into a lot of detail, I lost strength in the legs for almost any activity, including standing and balance. After impressive work done by my primary care physician. cardiologist, and great physical therapists, all is in order for doing "golf activities".

First re-pairs were adding a stent to a blocked artery and doing a LOT of physical therapy.  THEN it was decided to put a Watchman in me and all has been cleared in terms of activity.

So far I can chip and putt and lightly swing my Orange Whip®.  So I did a little of each.  Results were "OK" for now. All showed severe rust; but, I expected that. I was chipping into a net and was happy with the feel. Orange Thing was mainly  simple shoulder to shoulder. Just past my feet so not a full swing. I involved some foot activity.  Putting was 10 minutes on my indoor mat.

Great to be back!

    • Day 118: 4/23/24 Stack Full Speed spectrum training session 2/24. Finished 1 mph over last session but 4 mph slower than the preceding program.
    • Hitting some good shots on my golf trip. It's good I can tell when I hit better shots the way I want to swing the ball versus when I use an older swing. Shockingly, the short game has been at worst, not harmful to my game. I am using similar feels to the full swing, in that I try to get my hands down. I've been nipping the ball clean off the turf.
    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!
    • Do you have examples of exceptional scores versus their established handicap indexes?
    • Day 539, April 23, 2024 Mirror work once again. When I get back to swings, I'll just do it A. LOT.
