Day 142: Arctic outside so I spend the morning constructing a version of @iacas Butt Board. I want to use it more for early extension work from one side. It’s only 3” deep from the other side, but I have some stock to add 1/2” for the set up work if needed. Used it for a few minutes.

I also did some repair work on my nets.

Day 12.  I had two five-minute practice sessions during work breaks today.  I was mostly checking that I could swing and hit a ball, given my arm (vaccine in arm yesterday).  Success!  Off a mat, into a net, real balls, 6- and 8-irons.

Day 59 (Mar 6 2021) - new drill for pitches in the backyard.  It’s called the saw horse drill....set up the sawhorse about 10’ in front of the hole....start pitches and/or chips anywhere from 10yds on out.  The goal is to land the ball in front of the sawhorse and get it to release and roll through the “gate” (sawhorse legs).  Pretty challenging to not let the ball recoil off the legs!

Day 13.  Played 18 holes today at my home course (although it's now about a 45 minute drive from me).  I shot a 96 (GG says 89;  I did not finish hole 17 and had to take net double bogey).  We played from the tips.  Why.  This is not a course I should be playing from those tees.  We made good time though.  Some highlights include three GIRs (plus on-in-three on a 462 yard "par 4", the last shot being a 42 yard pitch to  a back pin, so I'd argue that should be mentally thought of as a fourth GIR) and making a great 5 on the par-4 5th (I'm happy with a five there from any tees).

Day 447:

Forgot to post yesterday, but did COVID-19 day-3, -4, -5 drills, and superspeed workout.

Played 18 today. Short game was really good, with 8 up/downs. Was overdoing palmar flexion early, but settled into a happy middle ground after a few holes. Had a swing thought for backswing, touch lead shoulder to chin, to make myself do a full turn. Best ballstriking round in awhile, and broke 80.

Today’s strokes gained vs. tour player:

Day 60 (March 7 2021) - "long distance pitches/approach practice today (from the neighbor's yards ranging from 50 to around 75 yards out) with the 6i and 8i and the hard foam balls with the target being the sawhorse setup at the hole.  "Good" was landing within 10 yards, "Great" was landing within 5 yards and "Excellent was landing in front of the sawhorse and rolling the ball through the legs.  Not easy, by any means!  A fun way to practice proper backswing, downswing motions - also the lies were anywhere from tight grasses, to slight uphill, slight downhill....

Day 61 (Mar 08, 2021) - Today was "bounce" back Monday.  Got in the yard, temps in the 50's and worked the bounce of the 58 wedge.  Again using the sawhorses as the target zone.  Went two methods - pitching it short using the bounce to get the ball "near" and letting it roll through the leg gates, second - a little tougher - pitching it over the sawhorse but landing before the hole to roll in.  The horse is set about 6' out so there is room to land and roll.  Was a lot of fun and makes working the bounce a real challenge to get the proper flight.

Day 145: Worked on a new feel with my existing drill, pushing the left hip back while keeping the belly button pointing down. Did this with my BB and then without and filmed it. Making progress on the EE and rotation is better at impact.

Day 435 - March 8, 2021

Practiced downtown at Golf Evolution and then played four holes with four balls with a 7-iron at Whispering Woods. Got a tee time tomorrow!

Day 15.  After work, hit 8- and 6-iron shots for ten minutes (and about as many balls).  Indoors, off a mat, into the net, real balls.

Day 146: Range work today evaluating ball flight with ball position. Worked on my drill at the start and used those feels. I was letting my hands turn over through impact for a bit and that was causing hooks. Once I figured that out, flight got better and repeatable. I didn’t notice that tendency hitting into my net. I will focus on that next net session.

The season is getting close. I hope to play next week.

    • It’s simple. Hook it onto the tee box of the adjacent hole. Get a GIR with your approach. Birdie hole. #5 Hook it to the adjacent fairway Hit green with next shot. Birdie hole. I call it the Bill Method.
    • I’ll have to pay attention more attention to the area when I’m there. I know the area to the left of the bunkers off the tee is fescue/native vegetation but I can’t remember what’s around the tee boxes. Something to consider still is that you can’t see the green from the tee. You can’t even see all three bunkers IIRC. So I could have a line on the drive but still not know where it ends up. I think I’d be a lot more comfortable going with driver if I played here more regularly and had a log in my head of where shots tend to end up like I do at the other county courses. I have never hit driver on this hole off the blue tees. I have done it from the gold, but the length and angle are different, and during casual rounds when I didn’t care that much about score. I’m not sure the best time to try it is the second hole of a tournament. Or at the very least, I’m uncomfortable with the idea and that’s probably enough reason not to do it. I see what you’re saying. Wind is supposed to be pushing out more to the right on Saturday, too. I could probably aim right at the bunker and not end up in it. I don’t think there’s anything near the green other than that tiny bunker that would give me trouble. Well, trouble in addition to my short game deficiencies that is. Yea, me too. All I’m thinking is get it in play, put it near the green, chip on and two putt for 5. I’ll have plenty of opportunities to use my length as an advantage later. You realize all of this theory crafting will be moot when I chunk it off the tee, right? 😆

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.
