"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge

Day 51 (12/11/21) - More putting practice today.  Did several drills on the PuttOUT mat after warm up including:

1) Ladder drill - make every putt from 1'-6'; made "perfect putts" on 4 of 6.

2) Pace drill - Place the ball between 2 dotted lines on the mat from different distances

3) Line drill - Putt down the line on the mat.

After a couple of weeks of experimentation, I have decided to switch to arm lock putting for 2022, to much of this offseason will be spent on putting. Bottom line the reason is that I put a much more consistent roll on the ball with this technique.

I live on the course. I like to hit 50 different wedge backswings with different clubs. 50 7:30 swings with 60degree. Then 50 9:00 them 50 10:00. Then I move to my next wedge and repeat. I can usually get on the bottom of the range and play circle the flags from different distances. I’ve dropped 10 strokes off my average this year.

Day 411: worked on driver today with a few of the same drills. Filmed them. I was coming a bit over the top of some of the early drill swings, but corrected the issue going back to a few basic feels.

Day 52 (12/12/21) - Nice day today so I did some chipping practice in the yard. Worked on the bump and run (basically a "chitch"/"pip" motion) shot with 7 Utility iron through 54* wedge. Hit 6 shots with each club, trying to use the same motion. I focused on making good contact and noticing the carry distance (I had a towel about 7-yards from where I hit from).

Interestingly, carry distances weren't that different, regardless of the club I was using, for well struck shots.

Day 134:

Played 18 on a cold and wet morning. Heavy rain predicted, but it was mostly drizzle to light at worst, but cold and windy. Only took 7 clubs on account of the weather forecast. Played okay, but somewhere around the 5th hole, I tweaked a muscle in my back, which limited mobility for the rest of the round.

Day 5 (12 Dec 21) - Chipping work in the backyard off "tight lies" (using the small practice pad) and "regular" lies - the dead grass in the backyard.  The goal was to make consistent contact that neatly clipped the ball off the tight lie and then replicating the same with the ball in the grass.  Worked with the 58 and PW in this drill.

Day 53 (12/13/21) - Putting practice indoors, same 3 drills as on Day 51. Then hit some wedge shots outside with my 49* UW and Almostgolf balls.

Day 6 (13 Dec 21) - Worked on club delivery through P5 through P8 with the 5i.  Rehearsing this has been part of each day's drill other than putting.  Ended the session with hard foam balls and the old Tommy Armour 845s Silver Scot 3i.  Under full swing the ball flies about 70 yds.  Thankfully I have neighbors that don't mind me hitting from their yards.

    • @Double Mocha Man didn’t say it but I was there helping the fitters. Not in the actual fitting of people but as the pro and “to make the sale.” I was helping a couple people. Some ladies were swinging way too hard and couldn’t make contact to give good readings on trackman. I saw @Double Mocha Manman hit the driver and sure he hit them well but definitely not 40yds better. The fitter also said several things on flight data that was clear he was milking it a bit. I didn’t know they said it was 40yds. I would’ve believed 5-10yds at most. Also we only use flight limited balls at this range so a couple data points were not accurate.  I’m always as honest as I can be. I’ll “make the sale” if I think it’s a good idea or if the person really wants it. I won’t lie about ball flight data or what a club can do. So that environment was hard for me.  It was also weird. I used their driver a couple times towards the end because I hadn’t hit it before. The moment I asked to test it on their trackman, both their monitors both died… maybe they wanted to just pack up and go but it still took them over an hour to leave. Makes me wonder what truly was going on.
    • Day 209, May 28, 2022 Hit balls for 10 or 12 minutes waiting for a lesson to arrive. Shorter, wider, still just as far.
    • Good one.  Thanks.  But the problem is the guy kept pushing his drivers when (if he looked) he could see I was hitting my own driver just as far or farther.  When I went into the session I told him I was looking for more distance and at least the same accuracy.
    • It's entirely plausible that the fitter is unscrupulous, but it seems more likely to me that there was a misread on one of your baseline shots. The good news is, it sounds like you have a setup that works well for you. Maybe try yelling "boom!" When you hit your current driver to make up some of the yardage.
    • So I went back for another part of my fitting. I didn't have a good swing in my first session, and I let some minutae get into my head. So I came here for some advice. I want to thank everyone for their advice on the last thread. I especially want to call out something @TourSpoon said "The only person that should be thinking is the fitter," I went into this session with that in mind.  After the warm-up, I hit the shaft and iron combination that we decided on zelos shaft with Cleveland launcher xl head. With the better swing and mindset, the results were much better. I was making good contact, getting good results. It felt good too, the zelos felt solid despite being so light. They were easy to swing, definitely a good club for those off days. Then we moved on to driver, which I'll swing back to. After driver we went to putters. I found out that my swing, which I thought was straight back and through, actually had a slight arc and the face balanced putter I am using is not the best fit. Technically I need something with 30-45° of toe hang. I ended up going with an Odyssey eleven tour lined with stock shaft and grip. I rolled it quite well and had good pace control. Now I'll circle back to drivers. This is where we kind of screwed up. We paid attention solely to performance and not budget. I got fit into a Diamana pd, $400 through them, and kinda surprisingly, looking online not too overpriced, I've seen it as low as $300 but usually around the $360. It felt sooooo good though. Plan A is to go back and try some more budget friendly shafts with the same profile, plan B is to try and sell off some old gear to offset the cost and save up. I guess my question this time is what shafts have the same profile as a Diamana pd, for ideally a quarter of the price, but more likely half the price.
