"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge

Day 114:

Worked on palmar flexion with delivery rehearsals, and then hit some balls later with the feel from 2nd half of my last round of "pause and gather" at the top of the backswing. I don't know if it is a perceptible thing, but I consciously feel like I am slowing down and getting my body in synch for the downswing. For whatever reason, ball striking improves with this feel, so I am going to play around with it this week.

Day 65.  The putting green at a nice golf course is far more empty at 9am on a Tuesday than it was at 4pm on Sunday.  I putted around a bit before setting up to do a 4' drill.  I missed my second putt but not another;  I chastised myself after missing it for not focusing on process -- read, pick a line, set up, hit ball.  I focused on that for the remaining and sank them;  13 putts total to sink 12, my best ever.  I need to focus more when I putt, and I think that somehow needs to be a practice priority at some point.

Day 194 - Spent about 2 hours at a nearby pitch and putt hitting various shots and doing Broadie's "short game game" from 10 to 40 yards. There really isn't any area which is like fairway, so its more like hitting out of the rough. Also winds were strong and gusting to about 40 mph so it made for an interesting, but productive, practice session.

Day 6:

Hit balls in the garage. Working on my priority pieces from the last GEARS session.
I also did mirror slow motion work, trying to get everything just right.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

Day 31

Finally got to play. Far from my best round. In spite of hitting a bunch of balls in my office, there was definitely some rust to shake off. In hindsight, it was also probably a bad idea to bring the new driver I'd not yet hit. Because it was a rough start to the day off the tee.

Went double, double, bogey to start. With one lost ball. 🥴 But played the remaining 6 holes in 1 over. And outside of those first three holes, there were another 3 strokes I left out on the course. So, I'm not terribly unhappy with how the day went. I did strike my irons pretty well. But my distances were a little off.

Putting was also solid once I committed to my traditional grip. After the brilliantly bad start off the first tee, I went safe and used a claw grip for the first 3 or 4 holes. And while I putted OK with it, my speed was off. Around the 5th hole I decided to just go for it with my traditional grip and my speed was significantly better.

Ultimately, I'm kind of happy it played out like it did. As they're using this round for my initial handicapping for the next couple weeks. I didn't purposely sandbag. But I also have a weird tendency to play really well the first round out each year. So that would have been rough the next few weeks for my team if I'd shot even or a couple under.

While it was far from my best day, my partner and I took the W pretty convincingly. They play a point system, one point per hole. And 3 points for the low round between each competitive pairing (A player vs. A player, and B vs. B). So a total of 24 points up for grabs, and we took 17 and half.

I did hit some balls when I got home. My indoor hitting area is a little tight to comfortably swing my woods (which I'm working to rectify). So I dragged my net into the yard and hit around 100 balls with the new driver.

It was a lot of fun getting back out there, and I'm looking forward to having a good reason to play each week.

Day 115:

Worked on palmar flexion and combined it with my end of backswing/start of transition feel. Hit balls with 5-iron, I was contacting the ball crisply, and when I execute palmar flexion I get the launch angle and start line I want. Most common miss is a straight push, bad miss push fade.

Day 572: Range today. Focused mainly on setup and my main PP. Feel was to be on my toes with knees bent and more upright posture and hips tucked a bit. Backswing thought was to clear hips to make room for the downswing. Also did short game and distance wedge work.

Day 153 (11 May 22) - Played 18 w/son and a good friend for an early morning threesome.  While it was blustery, it was a fun round.  Very settled ball striking, much more consistent across the bag.  Recent focus on setup and working through the swing looks to be paying off.

Day 66.  Wednesday's the other long day, but I got home between times I had to be at the office and managed to spend ten minutes hitting balls (full swing, 6-iron, indoors).  Less specific practice today and more being ready for tomorrow and Saturday (playing both days!)

Day 7: 5/11/2022

Played 9 holes tonight. League night.

Started out just awful, made a snowman on the first hole, then made a 5 on the par 3. Then a triple, putting 2 in the water. Finally, got it going. I hit a few good shots and got it together. I finished strong. 9 over on the first 3 holes, only 1 over on the last 6.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

Day 32

After a terrible day off the tee yesterday, I went back to hitting drivers this afternoon/evening. Definitely think that the thousands of iron shots over the past month or two resulted in swinging driver like an iron. But now that it's officially nice out, I can get more driver work in. Struck it pretty well. Still shaking little of the rust off. But markedly closer to normal than it was yesterday.

Day 116:

Did some bead putting work indoors, and then worked on figuring out when to start palmar flexion for the best result. Used LVP camera for mirror/playback, but unfortunately LVP camera does not have a high enough recording frame rate to accurately discern clubface during full speed swings.

Day 573: Range again today working on the same pieces. I should be able to play next week. I did add a path swing thought in my practice today with the driver using a second alignment stick for path. It helped quite a bit. I’ve been so focused on one part, that I neglected path. I noticed this in filming a few days ago with some of the swings coming OTT.

Also worked again on distance wedges and longer chips/pitches and sand.

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
    • day 34. Technique practice. Became too quick and outcome oriented. need to slow down and work on technique again.
    • Day 534, April 18, 2024 Practice before lessons today. Priority piece. No sim this time. 🙂
