Day 186 (04 Nov 24)

More tempo work today (6i into the net)….did notice that the more I “thought” about it, the less solid the strike.  Side bar - thinking it might be time for a new target flag (the hole 1st appeared Thurs and has now grown to look rather “scowled in appearance”):  IMG_8481.jpeg.4accdc7c74694ec276843968af00c216.jpeg

Finished up with sone bump and runs with the 6i in the backyard…

Day 35 - 2024-11-04

Hit balls with many breaks over the course of two hours. Wrist is feeling a little better, but ulnar deviation still twinges. I did the first two levels of Operation 36 and passed, duh. 25 and 50 yards. Would have been easier if putting was real. 😄

Day 36 - 2024-11-05

Went downtown for a little over three hours. 90 minutes of that was doing other stuff, but I got a little practice in. Some messing with GSPro (v3 is now out) and the settings, some chipping, some little stuff. Not a ton of full swing stuff, and what I did there was mostly backswing stuff.

Day 187 (05 Nov 24) -  Got in some time with the 4&5 hybrids in the backyard - hitting hard foam balls.  Rehearsing preshot routine, focusing on tempo, by reenacting some of the shorter par 4s at my regular course - hybrid off the tee, hybrid approaches.

Day 188 (06 Nov 24) - Played the Weds men’s group scramble today as I won’t be able to play Fri.  Our group started on the back nine - shot a PB 38 on the back (7pars and 2 bogies). 2-over at the turn and reality returns with a dbl-par-dbl start.  Settle down to 3 pars, 3 bogies, a tap in birdie that missed eagle by less than 2 inches.   IMG_8495.thumb.jpeg.ec6500676ad6e341ef7c1ef90b6ca074.jpeg
This was on 7, nice drive with 110 to the flag (this is normally a Pw for me, but the weaker lofts the the DCI irons had me play up to the 9i.  Solid swing and it rolls this close).   I was playing the old DCI 962 irons w/Rifle 6.0 shafts - man those things are still some sweet playing irons.

Finished with +6 on the front for a 42 and overall score of 80.

Day 189 (07 Nov 24) - Played nine with my friend Mike - mixed the bag down to a 7-club setup (3w, 4h, 6i, 8i, Pw, 54 & P).  Goal: play more irons into the hole.  Played one set of tees forward. Shot a 41 (6 bogies, 2 pars and 1 chip in birdie).  Had other looks at birdie (two of which turned into 3 putt bogies off lipped out pars.  Even with the struggles with the putting, I enjoyed the challenge of having “in-between” distances - and choosing between a club that goes too far and one that may get there if struck well.  Excellent session on course management and shot planning.

Day 190 (08 Nov 24) - Worked with the putter this morning, while watching the Champions Tour on the Golf Channel, working right hand - higher/lower - finding a slightly higher right hand seems to add more consistent roll.  Later today moved outside to work with tempo and slightly shorter backswing to get better low point control - hitting 6i into the net.  Solid session except for the next to last ball that I got over the net and into the wild blue yonder….managed to sheepishly retrieve it from the neighbor’s back yard two doors down….

    • I played in Open Qualifying about 25 years ago. I got to the last hole - I shan't share my score, but it wasn't good. It's a long uphill par 4 with the clubhouse just long left of the green. The clubhouse is out of bounds. I hit my second shot left and it got a firm bounce. Get up there and the clubhouse has a patio. Between the patio and a grass is a little channel filled with pebbles. In that channel is my ball. Channel is in play, but hardly ideal. About 8 inches behind my ball also in the channel is a sprinkler head. So I asked an official who happened to be on the patio whether I got relief or not. He had me set up to it and take a backswing. My club hit the sprinkler head (harder than I would have liked). He asked me to do it again (side note - WTF?) and I hit the sprinkler again. He begrudgingly gave me relief and I dropped it on the grass, pitched on the green and missed from about 8 feet. Holing it would have allowed me to break a certain score threshold I'd rather not flirt with. Following year, I played same course, same event and I played a LOT better. I birdied 17 to go back to even par for the day. Friend of mine told me it looked like even was playing off for last spot, but birdie on 18 would get me through (this was local qualifying, so through to final qualifying). I hit my drive in the heather right, went for it from there and pulled it heather left and wound up making double to not be in the play off (which wound up being about 8 people for 2 spots). But I digress - anyway, as I walked off 18 green I walked over to the patio where the scorers were and noticed that they had painted a white line on the grass next to that Channel, so they fixed my issue from the previous year, albeit in a way that would have been much more detrimental to my score.
