Day 488 - April 29, 2021

Balls between lessons. Shorter time than I had intended as one of my college player lessons went long. Oh well.

Day 67.  Played in a club tournament.  Shot an 83 (no birdies, nine pars).  Three double bogeys:  a GIR + 4 putts, plus two three-putts after missing greens (one from sand, one from a short sided pitch).  I also three-putted a GIR for a bogey.  Eight GIR, seven near-GIR (one of which was a collar).

Oh, and I won the tournament, my first tournament win since July 2019 and qualifies me for a tournament in October I was sad to miss last year.

Day 499:

Hit foam balls with slow swings for about 45 minutes, working on mostly backswing stuff. First, getting depth with shoulder rotation and not arm movement, and second, making sure to incorporate recentering/flow so I don't hang back on the downswing.

At the end, I decided to hit one real ball, and of course, I flushed it and went right through last night's new golf ball sized hole in my net, and put another golf ball shaped dent in the fence. Hopefully my wife didn't hear it because she was vegging out on KUWTK, and there are plenty of other golf ball shaped dents to camouflage the new one.

Day 28 (4/30/21) - Friday night 9-hole league tonight. With wind gusts up to 50 mph, it was one of the most unusual rounds that I have ever played! Although I won my match, I shot a 57...among my worst ever. What bothers me, however, is not the score itself, but hitting poor shot after poor shot. Putting and wedge shots were actually pretty good, but full swing motion on other clubs was uniformly bad. The message is that I need to spend more than 65% of my time on the full swing motion!

Day 19 - April 30, 2021

I spent an hour at the range working on priority pieces and ball contact/direction. Then, played 18. Very poor round, but had a number of decent tee shots. A couple pars. Just being patient with the new changes.

Day 114 (30 Apr 21) - at the putt putt course w/grandson and family in Myrtle to celebrate the grandson’s b’day.  Chose to use it to work on pace of putts and “greens” reading.  Yes a rubber head on a flat stick is not the same as the Odyssey, but to be able to “read” the break was great fun.  Parred most of the holes with leaves of less than a foot on most...even a few aces.  Yes there were some bogies as well.  Good day of flat stick work.

Day 68.  Took a break at one point during the day, went to the nearby golf course to putt.  4' drill, coins.  19 putts the first time, 20 the second (different hole).  Amazingly, second time I made only 5 on first go-around but made 6 on the second (and then took two more attempts for the last one).

Later in the day, hit some balls at home before heading out to the range to get some video for Evolvr.  I also, while I was there, hit several 4-step, 7-step, and 10-step putts, and putted all out;  initial putt was focused on speed and read (more the first than the second).

Day 500:

More work on backswing priority piece. First did some drills to continue to incorporate recentering and flow; this starts with a subtle sway away from target, and then flow back toward target and weight into lead side by the top of the backswing. Next worked on shoulder turn and getting depth without throwing my arms/hands across my chest. After these "no ball" drills, I hit a bunch of foam balls, slow swings, working on getting both concepts correct. Unpacked and set up Live View Pro camera, but it was too dark to use.

Day 20 - May 1, 2021

Played 18 again today. Some good tee shots. No good putting. Miserable score. Depressing.  I need to figure some things out. Staying off the course and going to keep on the driving range. Maybe I need to find an actual golf coach. 😔

Day 29 (5/1/21) -  Pretty busy today, so only 10-15 minutes with the Orange Whip wedge. My focus was on using my body turn, rather than force on the grip, finish position, maintaining good tempo and the low point consistency.

Day 201: Worked on my transition feel with mainly 6 irons. I have a bunch of demo irons I got at various times on the cheap. Worked on set up and getting center face contact using a dry erase. It’s funny but the only blade I have felt really good, Mizuno MP 68, even if I was off slightly. My miss is a bit inside on my training stand.

Day 115 (1 May 21) - first time at a TopGolf range.  Got in some work on repeatable setup and swing.  Worked on shot visualization-focusing on where I wanted the ball to land and seeing it land where I planned.  Felt consistent thru the TG supplied clubs, which look strangely like my Diablo Edge irons....

Day 501:

Did more backswing drills working on recentering/flow and making a good shoulder turn. Figured out a rehearsal for my pre-shot routine to reinforce these pieces. Then hit foam balls with slow swings with 7-iron, and then driver to work on the concepts with a longer club.

    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.

    • Cool here's my tweak, "If a player’s ball lies in the general area and there is interference from exposed tree roots or exposed rocks that are in the fairway or 1 club length from the fairway the tree roots and exposed rocks are treated as ground under repair. The player may take free relief under Rule 16.1b.[But relief is not allowed if the tree roots only interfere with the player’s stance.]
    • I would never do the extended warranty on the $50 slow cooker.  I also routinely reject the extended service plans on those toys we buy for the grand-kids.  I do consider them on higher cost items and will be more likely to get one if the product has a lot of "Electronic Tech" that is often the problem longer-term.  I also consider my intended length of ownership & usage.  If my thought is it would get replaced in 2-3 years then why bother but if I hope to use it for 10 years then more likely to get the extension. I did buy out a lease about a year ago.  Just prior to the lease end date the tablet locked up and would not function.  I got it repaired under the initial warranty and would not have bought it out if they had not been able to fix it since IMO once electronic issues start in a car they can be hard to track down & fix.  They did fix it but when I bought out the lease I paid up for the extended warranty the would cover electronic failures because my intent is to keep that car for another 8-10 years and I just do not trust the electronics to last.  Last week the touch screen went black and was unresponsive.  It reset on the 2nd time I restarted the car but that is exactly how the last malfunction started.  I fully expect to have a claim on that on repair under the extended warranty.  I do not recall the exact cost to fix last time since I did not pay it but I think it was @ $700-$800 and I suspect that will be higher next time.
    • Have you looked at Model Local Rule F-9 Relief from Tree Roots in or Close to Fairway?  You could extend this to cover exposed rocks.  The rule is recommended to be used only for areas relatively near the fairway, a player who hits a shot 20 yards in the woods doesn't really deserve relief.   Players can always take Unplayable Ball relief, they're not required to play it from a rock or a root.  Of course, they hate to take the penalty stroke too.
