One I have used frequently is the "Hips Preset Drill."

Just saw this one and it's been really helpful for me, as someone who tends to hang back a little.

Has anyone ever tried that 3 foot circle putting drill in which you try to make 100 in a row? I remember years ago Phil Mickelson was saying that was one of his favorite putting drills.

I have tried and it is amazingly difficult. Even 0 can be a Challenge.

Current Drills:

Make 20 3' putts in a row.

Using a 90 to 90 swing hit balls all starting right of target, drawing and finishing center or right of target. Reverse for fade.

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure I can make at least 0 in a row every time. 😉

I met up with my Granddaughter on the d-range to day.

I was a little late getting there. However, when I did arrive, she had her hitting station all set up. She had a simulated clock face sitting on the ground. Something her highschool coach had showed her.

The ball would sit in the center of the clock face, while her target line ran from the down range practice pole, straight back through the 12, and 6 on the clock face. She also had a straight edge for her stance, that was parallel to her target line.

Her drill was to swing the club head, through the hitting area, from 7 o'clock to 1 o'clock. Obviously the club head didn't go all the to 1 o'clock. It just help with her swing path.

This is not unlike how I was taught to swing to right field, while aiming through 2nd base.

I was also impressed with her actually setting up this clock face. For as much time as I have spent on d-ranges over the past decades, I rarely have seen anyone using a swing training aid. Oh, I have seen clubs on the ground, but never nothing very elaborate.

We went through a small bucket of balls together. Then moved to the practice green for some putting practice.

Happy to say she is showing a good deal of improvementnt.

What kind of things did she use to make a “simulated clock face”?

Yes I have done this drill.  Here is another one like that which will keep your attention.

  • 25 in a row from 3 feet
  • 25 in a row from 4 feet
  • 25 in a row from 5 feet, and
  • 25 in a row from 6 feet

If you miss any you start back at 3 feet.  Also, you must use your full Pre-Shot Routine for each shot.

From my experience, if you complete this without missing a single putt it will take you between 50-60 minutes.  The rule of thumb I use for putting drills is that you can only hit 2 balls a minutes, IF you use your full Pre-Shot Routine for each one.   .... this 2/minute recognizes you have set the ball up, putt it, pick it out of the hole and start again...also you may need a break every 10 minutes or so.

Wooden dowells, with a space in the center for the ball. She placed her feet on both sides of the 9 o'clock position.

I find it difficult to place 10 balls evenly around a hole.  8 is easy because compass points, but 10 is super hard!  Does anyone have any tips for setting it up?  I wonder why he chose ten rather than 8 - you can still do 104 in 13 cycles, and the setup is trivial.  What am I missing?

A full circle is 60 minutes.  Start at 0 and place a ball at 6, 12, 18, etc...

In der bag:
Cleveland Hi-Bore driver, Maltby 5 wood, Maltby hybrid, Maltby irons and wedges (23 to 50) Vokey 59/07, Cleveland Niblick (LH-42), and a Maltby mallet putter.                                                                                                                                                 "When the going gets tough...it's tough to get going."

If 8 is easier do 8.

Many times 10 balls won't fit in the hole anyway.

Having said that, getting them exactly evenly spaced isn't that important. Pretty close is fine. When you place them the first time put a tee near each spot, then it's easier to re-set-up. After you do it a few times it really isn't that hard. In lieu of tee-pegs you can use something like this: 61gmAsXfoVL._AC_SX466_.jpg.4e09748bff4436fdfcd1050787c84f7d.jpg

    • Yea Club Rat said it. I really enjoyed the Senator and the Judge, then over to Grand National where there a couple good courses plus a fun par 3. The one I do play whenever I visit there is Ross Bridge; something about this course that is just good fun. I hope to play more of the courses in the future, but tomorrow is promised to no one, so hope is the key word. Have Fun, iSank

    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
