I'm willing to gamble that Tiger will win more tournaments on a percentage basis than John Rahm over the next 10 years.  If he stays healthy. Better short game, better mental game, better physical shape, etc.

CBS showing every shot he takes despite being totally out of contention. It would be nice to watch the players in contention, the ones that will actually have a chance to win this tournament. There's about 20 players within 3 shots of the lead but only 8 of them have even been shown playing a shot so far, and many of them just 1 random shot. Major winner and Olympic Gold medalist Justin Rose is up there in contention but apparently he's a ghost because they haven't shown him hit a single shot. But the player that's 8-10 shots out of it who barely even made the cut gets wall to wall coverage. They even cut away from Noren (a leader) lined up about to putt to show the player 8 shots back tap in a 2 footer. Leading off the broadcast Jim Nance says something like "this year our mission is to show every pertinent shot." What a load of crap. You'd think the fact that Tiger is playing the front 9 while the leaders are playing the back 9 would clue them in that he's out of contention.

Do you think they're doing that because it might make for better ratings?

I get your point. For those who are not Tiger Woods fans and are interested only in the tournament, it's gotta be frustrating and boring. But for a lot of viewers, Woods is the only reason they're watching the broadcast.

I'm a golf fan, I tune in to watch the leaders and those in contention. I want to see the event play out and how it got to that point. I respect and admire all the guys on Tour. Sure I have a few 'favorites' - one played at the same college I attended. I'm not pro-Tiger or anti-Tiger.

By the way, Rose is still a ghost as is Mickelson (heard of him?) who's in the top 10 but nowhere to be seen. Odd.

You can find easy examples as to why right here on tst.  Look at how much traffic the threads for each tournament get.  I couldn’t even find threads dedicated to the last couple of tournaments but for those tournaments in 2017, they averaged 30-50 posts.  This tournament is not even 75% complete and there is over three times that many posts.  Heck, there were more than 50 posts on this thread before the tournament even started.

CBS isn’t dumb, they know more people are watching this week than usual and they aren’t tuning in to see Justin Rose.

Besides, they have all tomorrow afternoon to focus on the leaders.

Seriously? Isn't Rahm like 22y/o or something?

I'm not arguing against your prediction and you may very well be right, but at over 40 and having had back surgery, it's hard for me to think Woods is in better physical shape.

J.B. Holmes, in 3rd place, shot a sizzling 65 today - the best round anybody all week has shot. What did we get from CBS? We saw Holmes hit one single shot, a putt. I would have loved to watch him carve up the course today, he might actually win this tournament. I guess i'll use my imagination to visualize how his round went, because CBS is showing some guy 9 shots back on the front 9 hack out of the rough again.

JB Holmes teed off at 9am and CBS coverage started at about 1:15 (after basketball).  Even if Tiger wasn’t playing today you wouldn’t get to see him anyway.

I understand that you don’t care about watching Tiger but you’d have to be blind to not see that you’re in the minority of viewers.

Also, you’re gonna have a whole hour to watch only the leaders here shortly.

+1.  True that.  Nowhere is it more evident in this forum which is supposedly golf fans.  If you want the highest TV rating, no one move the needle like Tiger.

Looks like Holmes did what I was hoping Tiger would do today.  Great shooting by Holmes.

I slightly doubt the veracity of the “golf fan” claim if you can’t spell “Nantz.” Sure you’re not just bagging on Tiger?

He moves the needle.

Also, I fast forwarded through the leaders to see Tiger’s shots.

Actually not. After Tiger was done instead of showing the leaders play they showed a several minute highlight package of Tigers day (didn't we just watch this shot for shot?), then Dottie interviewed Tiger for several minutes (she didn't interview 3rd place Holmes after his 65 today), then Kostis anaylized Tigers swing for several minutes.

You're right, I am really pretty new to golf. Only been playing/watching/following it for 40 years now. Considering golf has been around for centuries I'm just a newbie. And since when is not being able to spell a sportscasters name make one not a golf fan?

I like how you keep saying “some guy that’s 8 shots off the lead”.  He’s Tiger Woods.  He’s arguably the greatest golfer in the history of the game.  And he’s playing healthy for the first time in like 3 years.   Yeah, Justin Rose is great. JB Holmes caught fire.  Luke List can pound the ball.  But, let’s be real.  CBSs viewership probably quadrupled because Tiger made the cut. The casual fan is only watching for Tiger and has never even heard of Alex Noren.  And for us avid golf fans, well, Tiger has earned our attention.

Good! That’s what people wanted to see.

Then you should know what you’re getting.

I don’t care who wins. Unless it is (it isn’t gonna be) Tiger.

I believe you, although I didn’t see it because (and I’m guessing I’m not alone here) I turned it off right after Tiger finished his round. ;)

Started goofing around with my sons Nintendo Switch after that.

Tiger is the story at this tournament. The second story will be whoever wins it. CBS is doing the right thing by showing a ton of Tiger. I watched a lot of this, I found Tiger's round much more interesting than the leaders.

    • I was going to start a thread, but this seems like the place.  Yesterday I played my matchplay match at my local club.  My opponent is a notorious sandbagger by reputation.  The pro once pulled his tournament rounds from the past several years and said that it is impossible his tournament rounds are legit based on his handicap. here is what happened last night.  I am getting 4 shots from him.  His current handicap index is 15.3 i shot 45 on the front.   Was down 4 after nine, he had three birdies and shot even par. I was closed out on thirteen, we halved with a bogey.  That bogey put him one over par for his round.   He then took a triple on 14 and then left. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he lied about his score.   I wrote down on my scorecard what the score was.  He put higher values that didn’t affect the outcome of the match to pad his score and apparently make it not look as obvious.   He shot 36 on the front, but claimed 40.  The higher values for his score were in the online scoring app our club uses.  He did it this way: I won #7. He had a 2 foot putt for par that if he made would still lose the hole.   He picked up and said it didn’t matter since I won.  He took a 5 instead of a 4 after picking up a gimme. on #8 his approach shot on this par 4 was 8 inches.  I verbally conceded the putt but I had hit into a hazard.  I finished the hole with a 6.  Instead of birdie he put in for par. on #9, another par 4, his approach was to 18 inches.  I missed my par putt and then knowing how close I verbally conceded the putt.  I missed my bogey putt, he never conceded mine.  Instead of birdie he put down a bogey. He padded his score by 4 shots on the front.  And then did again on 10.  I rinsed one and made 6 on a par 4.  I putted out and he was fishing balls out of the lake so I drove off to the next tee.  He had 15 feet laying two but claimed a 5.     love to know the odds of a 15 handicap being even thru 12 holes on a round of golf.
