Because I think it'd basically be impossible to tweak the current rule in a way that would allow a playable but truly, definitely unanchored broomstick stroke without requiring spandex shirts.  So just enforce a more traditional stroke through club length.

You don't get to do that.

Some things that must be maintained:

  • You don't get to legislate putter length. That's not the purpose of the rule, and some guys need a 37" putter because they're tall. Ostensibly, too, a longer putter is tougher to control, so if someone wants to truly swing a longer putter without anchoring, good luck to them…

The reasons were stated right there in the first post.

@colin007's proposal of no longer than your longest iron allows a normal sized person to putt traditionally with a 37" putter even if they're using hybrids to replace up through 5i.

It also lets you anchor a putter if you're short, or you bend over more. So it accomplishes nothing.

And then you don't need to worry as much about how tight the anchoring rule is because the only way to anchor would be to go Michelle Wie.

Or… to just be a shorter guy, or a junior, or to just anchor the putter to your front thigh if you want. You can anchor a 33" putter if you're 5'10" without bending way over.

Plus, you're punishing someone who carries a 6-iron as his longest iron while rewarding a guy who carries a driving iron? How do you define an "iron"?

If that stance plus questionable anchoring became a fad, then maybe you have to revisit the whole thing.  But that seems pretty unlikely, and you can deal with it if it happens.

So we're going to make a rule that we have to deal with again? A rule that doesn't actually do much of anything (shorter than your longest iron?). No, the point of this discussion is that the second revision should be the last one.

That would apply to regular strokes too.

I don't know of any stroke besides the putter which really could be anchored.... maybe some very short chips, but otherwise it just wouldn't work.
