I have a 42.5" 3 metal shaft I'd like to extend to 44.5" and put in my driver. Will this work or will a 2" extension adversely affect the weight, stiffness, etc.?

The 2" extension is no problem. Your issue will be with the tip trim of the shaft. Assuming this came out of a 3 wood, the tip has already been trimmed to 3 wood spec so it will play much stiffer than normal in a driver. If it was "regular" flex in the 3 wood, it'll play stiff in the driver.  Apollo makes a steel driver shaft that you can pickup for $4-5. https://www.valuegolf.com/steel-wood-shafts That may be a better option.

@1puttit  is correct about the shaft being very stiff for a driver, being it was originally tipped for a 3W.

As for 2" extension, this could be risky. Many clubsmiths don't advise extending a graphite shaft more than 1". The catalogs say up to 2.5" for R flex and 2" for S and X, but many clubsmiths don't like to do it. You incur the liability if the extended shaft comes apart and hurts someone.

Two things to remember:

  • When you put in the extension, make sure the post (part of extender going into butt of club) is longer than the extension will be. So, go with a 2.5" post for a 2" extension.
  • If you put a shaft extension on a club, this usually voids the warranty.

If the 3 metal shaft is one you really like and hit the club well I would think you might be better served to just buy the brand shaft and put it in your driver. It may cost more, but in the long run I would think you have a true driver shaft and  not a extended 3 metal shaft tipped too strong.

Check out GolfWorks. Lots of individual name-brand shafts for sale this time of year, sometimes 50% off. See if one would work with your driver.

    • Had a birdie lip out on the final hole yesterday which would have given me a 67 and equal my age. But 68 is only the 2nd time I've ever shot that so pretty happy anyway. Golf is a crazy game. Last week I played 3 rounds and only had 1 birdie total. This week after 3 rounds I've had 15 birdies. Playing from the senior tees of course but this is the best golf I have played at anytime in my life and I have been at for over 50 years. Maybe it's time to retire. Ha.
