Haas, the 35-year-old son of nine-time Tour winner, Jay, was involved in the accident when the Ferrari he was a passenger in rolled over after hitting a BMW just a few miles from Riviera.

Very lucky to survive a rollover crash.

The PGA article right now says that he was seriously injured, but then that he was released. So Bill Haas was likely not "seriously" injured. He has pain and swelling in his legs.

He was living with (for the week) the driver who died.

He has withdrawn from the Riviera event.

Every once in a while there's a serious car accident involving a tour player. Arjun Atwal was involved w/a fatal crash is one. Not remembering the others right now.

I can only guess that it involved a staggering amount of idiocy.

Not that I wish anyone ill, but there's a bit of schadenfreude in that one.

Lucky to be alive, I'm sure we will get more on this as the week wears on. I would imagine they were driving at a ridiculous rate of speed like Paul Walker was when he was killed. I wouldn't think its even possible to flip a Ferrari at 35mph.

good thoughts out to Bill Haas

stinks for him to be injured and also lose a friend in a senseless accident - I have no idea how I'd feel after that

I'm assuming it hit the other car about half or a quarter hit, and rolled that way. The BMW was involved too.

But I also imagine they were going too fast, too.

It does, and not to be callous in any way, but to look at something as dryly as possible from Bill's perspective… if someone is going to die in an accident, at least Bill wasn't the one driving. In other words, I'd rather die in an accident that I cause myself and have nobody else injured (much) than kill, for example, my passenger. Hopefully that helps Bill to recover, mentally and emotionally, just a little quicker than also having the guilt of having killed someone himself weighing on him.

Obviously I'd rather not die OR cause an accident, or BE in an accident, but at least Bill wasn't the one driving recklessly and got someone else killed.

(Speculation alert: for all we know, Bill was egging the guy on. I'm going with "doubtful" but we'll likely never truly know, and again, yes, this is completely sad all around. Cars are machines with a lot of metal parts capable of moving at high speeds. Be careful and cautious of not only yourself but others on the road while driving.)

Seriously, this entire topic has a LOT of ASSUMPTIONS right now. Even this post assumes the Ferrari guy was at fault. Maybe that's not the case at all.

Any info on if alcohol was a factor?

We don't even know who caused the accident, do we?

The assumption is the driver who died, but it may have been the BMW driver, no?

No - don't know. Could have been other driver. Just wondering if alcohol/drugs involved on either end. (~50% of fatal crashes involve drugs/alcohol).

An awful lot of assumptions going on in here.

Yeah. For all we know, one of the cars could have had a mechanical issue, and nobody's really at fault.

Possible, but unlikely. Usually it's the driver, and half that time alcohol & drugs are involved in the crash.

BTW, it's horrible that someone died. I'm not trying to be a jerk at all, and certainly not laying any blame or making assumptions. Just talking stats.
