Went to the Players yesterday for the first time. It was ridiculously hot and nearly passed out. But 17 at TPC is close to becoming 16 at Scottsdale. It's a place to drink. Unless you're actually around the hole watching, most people at that hole are college kids drinking and not paying much attention even to the golf. Kinda strange. But pretty cool atmosphere. And college girls yesterday were out of this world (I hope my wife doesn't read this).

Course set up way too easy right now. That's why you're seeing the scores you're seeing. I wish tourney officials for these bigger tournaments would grow the rough out and penalize these guys more and narrow the fairways some. If you're going hype up big championship, challenge these guys a little bit. There's no challenge this week.

I think Tiger making these cuts and grinding just to play the weekends is a testament to just how good his mediocre game is compared to the rest of the tour.

I watched Woods' stinger like 20 times. That was a thing of beauty.

Damn Tiger on 63 watch today. Got some easy holes coming up. Should be able to get some birdies on 11 and 12.

That being said, as easy as the course is playing, 63-63 on the weekend still prolly not going to be good enough. Course is playing easier than Whistling Straits did a few years back.

Screw that, Tigers on 59 watch. I saw him at Jacks tournament in his prime. Looked like an Outside Linebacker 🙂

Kidding of course but what an absolute physical specimen for a golfer. Without looking it up he's probably 6' 180# but the way he carries himself you'd swear it's 6'3" and 230#. Walks upright instead of the usual hunched over shuffle that I'm sure most of us employ (I know I do). Just missed a bird on 13, 59 might be out unless hole outs or eagles some. Still, this is the Tiger we all knew was still there. Let's see if he can scare someone.

Spieth right there too. Will the afternoon flight play so well? I doubt it. Harder greens, faster conditions, and more pressure. Morning guys know they have to go low. Afternoon guys play to not make a bogey. This one could get interesting RDN.

Exciting to see Tiger and Spieth going crazy on this course. They'll lose some ground in the afternoon, but both have put themselves in position to have a chance. You can never count those two out unless they're cut. Otherwise they can throw miracle rounds together at any point.

It looks like the ball hit the upslope and bounced over the ridge.

They need to "Doral proof" this course a little bit. That course was yielding similar scores, then they made some changes, and the course got its bite back (and then they took it away). Seeing guys shoot 63s, 64s and 65s as easily as they have shouldn't happen. Takes some of the sting out of this tournament. Moving it to March will help bring some of the wind back, but they need to grow out the rough a bit more and narrow some of these fairways some more. Seems like rough is pretty non-existent this week.

Ran out of steam with the bogey on 14. Should've had a birdie on 16. Still looking like his best round in a long time.

Seems like Tiger can't get into the tournaments early. Plays some great practice rounds and gets flat when there are a ton of expectations on him early in the tournament. They write him off a little and he comes alive. Like to see him shake the early round complacency asap.

I expect Woods to have a good week, he has a solid record here. 2 of his last 4 finishes at the Players are his win and an 8th place finish.

Nice 65 today to jump into the top 10, that's more like what I expected.

I don't like Webb Simpson. I don't like how his swing looks, and he's got a stupid looking face.

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
