This probably a tournament not much of us normally pay attention to normally, me include. This year is going to be really interesting, though. They're at a new course called Trinity Forest Golf Club. It's a Coore and Crenshaw design (i.e., the architects  who did Sand Hills, Cabot Cliffs, Kapalua, Pinehurst #2 restoration). It's really minimalist and a lot more strategic that most PGA Tour courses. The Fried Egg has a great overview of the course: http://www.friedegg.co/golf-courses/trinity-forest-golf-club-review

I normally wouldn't watch this event at all, but I'm going to tune in to see what the course looks like and how the players play it. I really hope the tour stays here for a couple of years and players have an open mind with it. It's going to be very different from normal courses, and there will be some complaining from the tour players. Hopefully that doesn't doom the event at this course.

Being a Texas event I always watched it/kept up with it, but yes I agree this new venue is going to be quite interesting. Everything I have seen on the course looks really appealing, and it’s very different from the Las Colinas Resort course where the tournament was previously held.

'The Nelson' is an event on the PGA Tour therefore I pay attention to it; in fact, out of the regular non-major events this is my 2nd favorite behind only Colonial. To me it's really sad that since the death of Mr. Nelson a lot of the top ranked players have stopped going to this event. He is one of the legendary greats of the game; it seems appropriate that the current top players should play this event.

Also, I guess I'm different in this thinking but since I'm a golf fan I look forward to watching all the golf I can on TV. I would never consider not watching a PGA Tour event, or even the LPGA or Champions Tour when I can. To each his own I guess but someone that is a 'golf fan' should look forward to watching golf, reading about such things as golf history, the greats of the game, golf architecture, etc. It's all part of what makes someone a 'golf fan'.

Too bad the field is rather dismal. Will watch to see how Spieth does at least. And maybe Sergio will fix his rut. But I can only watch Jimmy Walker for so long...

People have limited time in their lives. You can be a golf fan without doing all of those things.

I spend 80 hours a week on golf. I probably will watch a bit of this event to see the course, but I don't care who wins.

very interesting course...no trees, no water, and pretty much no rough.  good opportunity for players to increase their fairways hit percentage....i can't decide if I like the course or not, but I'll certainly be watching as much as I'm able to, at the very least its interesting seeing the Tour on a new course.

i've seen it called a "second shot" course, so pretty much everything will be decided by the approach into the green.  Not sure what the wind looks like in Texas for the next four days, but that will be significant in scoring, and could play a big part if it only impacts the morning or afternoon groups Thursday or Friday

Just another of the many great PGA tour events.  If I lived near there, it would be one I'd consider attending.  I wonder which Jordan Speith will show up - he's been anything but consistent of late.

Pretty Gusty Friday/Saturday...on a course with no trees its going to play a major factor for sure. It will play a lot differently than the parkland and club courses they plan on a week in and week out basis.

VERY fast, sloping greens. Lots of wind, different directions. AND yes there is some really rough esp. around bunkers. Setup probably a little soft on 1st 2 days; then it could be hell on wheels (whatever that means!). -Best to all, -Marv

One thing that bugs me about the course is there tee box area. It looks like they just put the tee markers out in the fairway. Other than that I like the course.

Just cause the Champions tournament doesn't warrant a separate thread this week and this one needs help.  One big reason I don't want Jiminez to play well is I hate listening the announcers trying to pronounce his name.  SHHHTTAAAHHHP it.

That's because there's no such thing as a "tee box" area. The tees are clearly defined. They are just longer and that's where you get your variation in distance, which is the traditional way of doing it. No need for a neat little rectangle with 3 others nearby.

Marc Leishman was blazin' today, firing a 10 under (61) that included 2 eagles and 6 birdies. He's 3 shots clear of t2nd (-7) Jimmy Walker, and a big group 4 back in t3rd (-6) which includes Sam Saunders. I'd really like to see Walker or Saunders continue to play well; either one would be a popular champion with Walker just recently getting past a year long struggle with Lyme disease and the Arnie connection for Sam - people would really like to see him win i believe.

I like Leishman a lot. It would be cool seeing him go wire to wire. I prefer seeing Walker over Saunders, just because it’s a great comeback story. If Saunders could win any tournament I hope he wins Arnie’s. Doubt it would happen but would be great story.

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
