Hope this is in the right place. I'm about to install a new(er) computer with much better capability than my old one. The shop that sold it to me seemed to think if would a good idea to log off on the webforums I frequent, which I usually don't do, I just stay logged in. He said that's because the "cookies" wont be there and site may not recognize me. Is this correct?

I'm not all that tech savvy, and the guy certainly knew a lot more than me. I had noticed that the datafile backup was much less than the total used disc space. He said the other stuff was programs, old cookies, and cached stuff.

The reason I'm asking is because I "think" I remember my password, but am not 100% sure. I went to my profile to check it out and couldn't find any way to ascertain, or even change, my password. Is all this rigmarole even necessary? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Account settings is where your password is and I frequent many, many sites on multiple computers and I only have odd pop ups from Gmail when I log in from a pc it doesn't recognize.

I don't always log off all my stuff... just secure things like bank, email and stuff like that.

Sorry missed a few steps.  Click on user account then account settings.  If you can't remember the PW you can change it here.

Your new PC will create new cookies for you at all your fav sites but you will have to log in first so I hope you know your UN & PW for all your fav sites.

The rest is, as you said " rigmarole "  I like that!

Yeah, that's kind of what the shop guy said. Log back in so the site can start tossing you cookies to establish you. One more question, what is my UN?

Oops, sorry! Just realized that it means User Name! Duh! Yeah, user names I got, but sometimes the passwords escape me.

All web browsers have options to remove history, data cache (cookies), passwords, etc
Also, a user can select a time period (one day, one week, one month, from beginning of time)
Basically, they are stored in a folder "temp files" on the hard drive.

Do you know the genesis of the term? Back in the day King Edward I conquered the Scots and demanded that the heads of all the clans sign a document pledging fealty to the English crown.

They had to sign on vellum (sheepskin), which was stitched end to end to accommodate all of the signatures. The Scots referred to it as the "Rag Man's Roll", which, in their lingo, translated into rigmarole. Source: Born in Blood, by John J. Robinson.

Thanks all. This helped.

Had to reply to this as yesterday 2 people used rigmarole!  Too funny!

One at work and another when we were playing horseshoes.

rigmarole

I grew up hearing that word come out of my dad's mouth on a regular basis. I think he added a syllable as in "rig-a-marole"

Haven't used that saying in years. But, nowadays I've used "What a Cluster F**K" on occasions in it's place...

Well, to get back to the password issue, I had signed out on my old computer expecting to install a newer one immediately. Unfortunately that did not happen on schedule, so I tried to sign back in on my old computer. Unfortunately, the password the old computer "remembered" was apparently in error! It would not let me sign in!

But, a couple of e-mails from the site enabled me to fix that, and I now have a written record of what my password is.
