How Many Mulligans Would You Need To Win The US Open?

Bar Stool Sports’ Dave Portnoy thinks he could shoot 4 under each day an win at 12 under if he had unlimited mulligans. Apparently the USGA heard his boast and now he will play Shinnecock Hills the Monday after the open. He will have five hours to play 18 and unlimited mulligans. I think he is a bit deluded. 🙂

How far does he hit the ball? If he can’t average 280+ off the tee then he has no shot at it even with unlimited mulligans. 

On another note it was genius argument of all he wanted to do was get invited to play Shinnecock in US Open Conditions!

What the heck are you babbling about? I read the post and it doesn’t change a thing. He will likely take too many mulligans on longer shots and get fatigued.

If he's got good distance and is a decent golfer, he might be able to by just playing speed golf. Hit a bunch of drives quickly until you get an adequate one, move to the next shot, rinse and repeat. I doubt he's a good golfer, though, so I would bet against him.

Me personally, probably 25 or 30. Per round.

I am responding to you agreeing with someone who thinks he's playing 4 rounds.

Sigh. I was agreeing with the exhaustion not the 4 rounds, but point well taken.

To answer the actual question in the post, I'd probably need unlimited mulligans to get to -4.  However there is no way I could do it in 5 hours.  It would probably take me four days to complete that one round.

No amount of Mulligan's would help me. Even if I could do a bunch GIRs with Mulligan's, the greens would render me suicidal. 

Now if the USGA would agree to a "lift, carry, then drop" on the greens, I might do ok.

If it was Tony Romo, I'd say he could shoot 66 in his sleep and probably wouldn't need a ton on mulligans to do so, maybe 1 per hole.

This guy, Dave Portnoy, I'm not sure about. I think he runs out of time before he gets through the round. If he was a decent stick, maybe. But I will tell you right now, Dave could be on the 2nd hole for a while if looking for a GIR on every hole.

This awesome. For a point of reference I was invited to play a scramble and the weather was so bad my team did not show up. I get to play 4 shots each time if I like. FYI they called the event due to rain/wet conditions after I played 12 holes. I was 9 under!! I won the event and felt sheepish since I realized no one was watching and I could have claimed anything.

You have to weigh hitting extra shots and bettering your position vs wearing yourself out. If I hit a decent drive, I did not hit another. It made getting on the green in regulation automatic, but the putting is where you killed it. You have four balls on the putting surface at say 20 feet and then putt one after the other making whatever adjustments are necessary based on how the previous ones rolled. I made 9 out of 12 birdie putts (75%). The last couple of holes the wind was blowing maybe 20 MPH and the rain was coming down real good. I was soaked through to my tighty whiteys, but I was having the time of my life and did not want to quit. I may have had another birdie or two if it had not been for the severe weather.

Playing 1 ball I probably would have only had a chance of breaking 80 one out of four times, but was on my way to shooting a 60 playing up to 3 mulligans each shot.

I would pay $50 to see a 30 minute highlight reel.
