I have a sneaking suspicion that Mark Leishman will win this one. If it plays hard and fast and with any sort of win, he's the type of player I think can thrive in those conditions.

I think that's a little misleading. I bet if you tossed a ball from the back of the 9th green at Augusta towards the front, the exact same thing would happen.

Oddsmakers still like Tiger Woods' chances to win the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock. No matter that his last PGA Tour victory came in 2013 and it's been a decade since he won his last major championship.

Here's a look at odds for the favorites as of Monday for Westgate Las Vegas Superbook: Dustin Johnson: 8/1 Rory McIlroy: 14/1 Justin Thomas: 14/1 Rickie Fowler: 14/1 Justin Rose: 14/1 Jason Day: 16/1 Jordan Spieth: 18/1 Jon Rahm: 20/1 Tiger Woods: 20/1 Phil Mickelson: 25/1 Brooks Koepka: 25/1 Hideki Matsuyama: 30/1 Patrick Reed: 30/1 Henrik Stenson: 30/1 Tommy Fleetwood: 30/1 Branden Grace: 30/1 Bryson DeChambeau: 40/1 Sergio Garcia: 50/1 Adam Scott: 50/1 Marc Leishman: 50/1 Louis Oosthuizen

I think Woods has a chance. It's a small chance, a less than 5% chance in line with the bookmakers suggest, but a chance nonetheless. Yes, he hasn't won for a while, but Mickleson hadn't won in 4 years before winning a WCG earlier this year.

This sort of challenge requires a complete game, and while Tiger hasn't demonstrated that so far, he's demonstrated all the parts of his game in different tournaments (driving more recently, putting earlier in the season), so it's perfectly feasible (albeit not likely) that it all comes together over the coming weekend. In short, if he plays to his best, he can beat the strongest of fields.

As always, I'm rooting first and foremost for Rose or another British player.

My tip for this years US open is Leishman not because I’m an Aussie but I think he’s due.

He’s from Warrnambool. The wind there is so strong it blows the spots off a Dalmatian and the milk out of your coffee !

Lets hope the wind gets up all 4 days.

Forecast shows Thursday could be a blustery day there. 15-20mph winds, and when you get that on near the ocean and no trees, it gusts pretty good. If they don't get a lot of rain on Wednesday and the USGA doesn't really do much watering, this course could get absolutely brutal. There is lots of dry weather headed there starting Thursday and lots of sunshine all 4 days.

I've been very lucky to play a lot of the top courses in America and Shinnicock Hills is, without a doubt, my favorite. It helped that I played well that day, but I still remember every hole ten years later.

Not to be late to the party, but a guy from my hometown that I chat with from time to time was so close to qualifying for the open.  I believe he shot 3 under on the first qualifying round and then shot like 6 over on the second round to miss the cut.  I think if he had shot even par or even 1 over on that second round he would've qualified out of the Columbus event.  Heartbreaking for everybody that knows him, he works so hard on his game but so does everybody else.

I'm excited to watch this year, Shinnecock seems well set up and I hope it's a challenge for the players out there.  I don't know why, but I feel like the winning score should be within 3 shots of even par for the weekend.  Too low and the course was "too easy" and too high and the course was "too hard" in my head.  The US Open is the only tournament that I have this feeling towards though...

  • Those people waving where the ball goes, informally nicknamed flappers.
  • Ian Poulter had a lot of fans, some female fans asked for a picture, he obliged.
  • One lipstick charger is very useful to carry on your person.
  • Forgot to check out the 7th green.
  • Disappointed couldn't get close to the players at the range.
  • So many flip phones.
  • The food at the concession stands, very uninspiring, guess you need to upgrade your ticket get to the good stuff. The food at tennis US Open is miles, MILES better.
  • Bubba Watson still eludes me, have yet to get to see him strike the ball.

Based on all the talk about the penal rough,

I predict the story this week to be on those - poa, I believe - greens.

Bodes well for Tiger, a la Torrey Pines.  C'mon, 15!

Watched the Celebration of Champions on FS1 this afternoon; the course looks brutal. I'm starting to think this is going to be one of those "even par wins" type of Opens.
