So he isn't a physicist, that much is clear.

I think the point with Dechambeau though , is that he tries to employ a scientific approach to golf, probably inspired by his undergraduate studies and an interest in the subject. Whether or not this is helpful to his game, slightly hinders him, makes no difference at all or is just a clever way to brand himself, I don't really know. For me, it just makes him more interesting to watch (even if just for the single length irons alone).

To be clear, I am not faulting him for his scientific approach. That is admirable. This site and owner are an example of using science to improve golf.

Perhaps it is more the golf media labeling him that is causing the issue. It is similar to Matt Patricia, head coach of the Detroit Lions. They call him a 'rocket scientist' because his undergrad degree was in aeronautical engineering. But he is not a rocket scientist, he's a football coach (and did a real crappy job the last SB! :-P). Thank goodness he doesn't work for Space X! Boom!

This ^.  And they are really overplaying it too.  It's getting tedious.  Waiting for the "extreme scientist.....of the golf ball.....to the nth degree" comment.  It's going to happen.  Perhaps Zinger or Miller can grumpily make a random snarky remark too.

Yes, it's the media's overplaying of the thing that is the real issue.

I just listened to a half dozen of his interviews from the last couple of years. I didn’t pick up anything that would make me dislike him as an athlete.

He seems to be having a solid year.

Not related to his personality, but it's nice to see another guy with a different looking swing win.

Even if he had a BS and MS in something, winning on the PGA Tour is a far more impressive feat.

True dat.  He may have opted to leave SMU early even w/o the sanction issues.  The lure of big Sunday payday's is tough to ignore.

Yes. But what irks me is his bs interviews where he comes off trying to talk as though he is a physicist/scientist. He isn’t. Does he really have to use the Latin terms for obscure muscles when describing his workout?

Yeah, I agree, but i think he'll stop doing this as he matures. He's a young man and he's probably trying to impress people - he'll soon realise that his golf achievements are impressive enough.

    • Eh. He broke ONE of Tiger's records. Youngest to be ranked #1 in AJGA. It didn't help that Tiger's birthday is in late December, or that Tiger didn't play many AJGA events before he was 15. Did he do any of these things? TIGER WOODS' AMATEUR VICTORIES YEAR WIN(S) 1984 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1985 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1988 Boy's 11-12 Junior World Golf Championships   1989 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships   1990 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships, Insurance Youth Golf Classic   1991 U.S. Junior Amateur, Boys 15–17 Junior World Golf Championships, Orange Bowl International Junior Look at some other AJGA Players of the Year. How many of these names do you recognize? A few, for sure. I assure y'all, I'm not trying to pee in your Cheerios. I just don't get what the point is. Okay. I get that, then. Thanks.
    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
    • Day 1: Spent some time hitting some balls. Working on my hips and a “soft” and straight trail arm.
    • Slight digression on the way to my point. Back in the day there were a lot of people who said that Tiger won because of “the Tiger effect” where people pushed too hard and made mistakes trying to catch him and fell by the wayside. I thought that was BS. It was just that he was that much better than them. I don’t think anything has changed my mind on that.    The hype about Miles Russell is very limited. I’ve seen nothing about him outside of some fairly hardcore golf websites. But I think that the reason those people are talking about him is because he is very good. Same as Tiger. And like I said he just broke one of Tiger’s records. That gets hardcore golf fans to pay attention.
