I think Uruguay will definitely defeat top teams in top 16 because Uruguay is the only team who win all 3 matches of group matches.

Croatia also won all three of their matches against, arguably, much better teams than Uruguay.  Also, England or Belgium could come away with 9 points tomorrow as well.  If they don't then that group is going to be decided on yellow/red cards.

Interesting (to me) little bits of trivia I learned recently:

  • There have been 20 past World Cups and only 12 different Champions.
  • Piggybacking off of that, 3 of those 12 have only one WC to their name (England, France, Spain), and the remaining 9 have won a combined 17 Cups.
  • In addition to those 12 champions, only 4 other countries have ever made a final.
  • Brazil, Germany, Italy and Argentina have combined for 15 WC titles and 11 WC runner-ups.
  • EVERY country to ever play in a WC final has been from UEFA (Europe) or CONMEBOL (South America).

Based on this info, there are only 7 teams remaining that have a chance to make the final :-P ... Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, France, England, Spain, and Sweden.

That's what makes sports so interesting.    Anything can happen, and does.  The way that Argentina, France and Spain are playing right now, they are less likely to make it to the final.

It was exciting to see the ending of the Germany / South Korea game.   It's not unusual for the defending champion to exit the tournament early.

They don't have the same knights of death prowling the midfield they used to, but you're talking about the machine, here. They're too talented to not at least make it to the knockout. Shocking.

Happy to see Germany out. They haven't played well and with winning the last EC and WC, I didn't want them to get far.

IIRC, Alexi Lalas picked Germany to win the WC in the very first pre game show.

Guys, I totally blew this.  There have been only EIGHT different champions, not 12.  12 total countries ever in the final.  Sorry for the confusion.

The entire complexion of international football (soccer) is changing pretty rapidly. Most of us ought to live long enough to see 12 nations with World Cups.

Who knows? Maybe North America gets one in the not-too-distant future.

Only a casual fan. Rapidly changing. By this do you mean fewer countries and teams dominating?

I'm torn on rooting for Mexico as they eliminated the USMNT, I wonder how the US would have done in Mexico's group though, they would be hard pressed to do what Mexico did. I did enjoy Mexico beating the Germans though.

Oi, my mistake. Forgot how US got knocked out.

I guess gone are the days when you could pick Brazil, Italy or Germany as your horse and you would have better than 70% odds of collecting a payout.

I am not a die hard futbol fan and usually enjoy watching late stages regardless of who is playing but won't mind if Argentina wins cause I want Messi to win one.

Interesting that people hate on Germany similar to how people hate on Yankees and Patriots.

Yep.

It's getting globalized just like everything else. Just look at the top-flight club level. EPL and Bundesliga are full of non-native players. Even La Liga has some 43% of its players from outside Spain and that's on the lower end of it..

That's a confusing sentence, lol.  Fewer teams dominating kind of sounds like the opposite of what I believe you are trying to say.  But I think that, yes, that's what he is saying.  More and more good teams all over, not just the same few powers.  Definitely becoming more worldwide - Africa has some good teams, Asia, North America hopefully too.

There is some potential for "tanking" shenanigans in tomorrow's England-Belgium match, I believe.  It's already known that the winner of that group are faced with Brazil (or Mexico) in the quarters, and second gets Sweden or Switzerland.  Factor in that they'll also know their first round opponent by the start of the match as well.

So if you're either of those teams and you know going in a win gets you Colombia then Brazil, whereas a loss gets you Japan and then SWE/SUI winner, how badly do you really want to win that game?  Top it off with this consideration as well; a draw leaves them tied in every tiebreaker category except the last, which is fair play points.  Currently England leads in that one with one fewer yellow card.

(Mainly, this is just me trying to manufacture some drama for that last round of games, since otherwise there is none. :))

Sorry, I don't multitask well, yes you're right. More towards parity.

Curious, anyone watching via Sling, YouTube Live, Hulu Live, Playstation, DirectTV? How is the picture quality? Anyone from UK streaming in 4K? Hulu Live, the matches can be a touch pixelly, like 720ish or below, sometimes hitting 1080.

Definitely a factor, I'd prefer us to be tactical and finish 2nd, because avoiding Brazil early is huge. At the least , we should treat the game like a friendly.

Then again, is it better to play Brazil later?  Or are they only jelling and getting better as the tournament goes on.  Maybe earlier is better, lol.

Supposedly the English manager said today that they want to win the game. Good for him.

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
