I've been Playing Golf for: 3 years
My current handicap index or average score is: 21.7
My typical ball flight is: currently a slight fade. Used to be a draw to over draw.
The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: duck hooks, big pushes to the right with the driver. Straight pushes and fat shots with irons.

My last lesson with a pro a few weeks ago had me fixing my grip and trying to get me to shallow the club in the downswing. I always thought I was coming in way from the inside but was surprised to be told I was coming in too steep and out to in. I used to be very prone to hitting duck hooks and massive pushes out right with the driver. Now I'm fading the ball, with the occasional slice. With my irons, I still struggle with straight pushes to the right. Since having the swing thought of trying to shallow the club, I've also become prone to hitting my irons and hybrids off the toe.

I recently got fitted for a new driver (Ping G425 Max). Its certainly got rid of my hooks, to the point of me now occasionally struggling with a late moving slice.

Id appreciate advice relating to how I can shallow my club in the downswing and how much further I need to go with this, and how I can get rid of fat shots and pushes with my irons. And any other general advice.

Thanks!

You’re not going to be able to shallow it given where your right elbow goes.

Your swing is too much arms and not enough body.

As in not enough rotation of the trunk in the backswing and/or downswing? Is the right elbow too disconnected?

Thank you.

Look at the first five videos here. Day two talks about shoulder pitch and body rotation. You’ve got power, but are limiting it because you are not using your hips and shoulders to their fullest potential.

Thanks, I’ll get working on it. Just to confirm, the tilt of my shoulders (blue line) should be pointing towards the ball more? And my elbow tucked into my side more?

No to the elbow part.

You don’t turn enough and your arms load much too far across/around your body.

Sorry, I mean no disrespect but I can’t make sense of this. Ive been out practicing today - I physically can’t turn anymore and I’m not horribly inflexible. My back is to the target in the pic above. How does what you say relate to being able to shallow the club more and how does it relate to impact?

What’s happening to my rotation compared to that of a good player?

My pro has always said Im in a good position at the top of my swing. I just need to let the club fall at the top of the swing and has related it to the benefits at impact. He has had me swing under a pool noodle with good effect, so I don’t feel I’m not able to. It’s when he’s taken the noodle away that I struggle. He’s never referenced not turning enough or the arms loading too far around the body. So is he ‘wrong’?

You can’t shallow the club because your elbow would collide with your side.

That’s why your elbow works like this currently.

I disagree you’re turning rates are good.

You have more room to turn your hips.

A couple of drills to help you feel a better shoulder/hip turn are,

  1. Place a 6 iron across your chest and stand in your normal stance. Rotate as you would in a backswing and see where the club head or grip end is pointing. I’m 61 and I can get it to the ball or past, meaning I am rotating about 90 degrees. Others can get way past that. I try and feel the right shoulder going past the top. Remember to keep your rotation centered. Do this in front of a mirror if you can and film it and post it here. This is a good warm up drill too.
  2. Now with that feel of hip and shoulder turn, setup with the six iron and slowly, like a 6 count, rotate back to the same shoulder/hip turn. Don’t let the arms continue to wrap around. I’m doing the drill below, but too fast. I’m also reaching a little higher at the end to feel more turn without letting my arms wrap more. The first drill is similar with the club across the shoulders.

It’s not about turning more, it’s about turning earlier/faster.

@Andy Capped

Here is a video of that shoulder turn stretch. I do this as a warm up before playing or practicing. If you work at it every day and do some other core/back stretches, you may be able to increase your turn.

    • Yea Club Rat said it. I really enjoyed the Senator and the Judge, then over to Grand National where there a couple good courses plus a fun par 3. The one I do play whenever I visit there is Ross Bridge; something about this course that is just good fun. I hope to play more of the courses in the future, but tomorrow is promised to no one, so hope is the key word. Have Fun, iSank

I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
