Just came across a Golf Digest website item listing five possible Ryder Cup captains for 2020. Not sure if these were in order of probability of any other order:

Fred Couples, Steve Stricker, David Duval, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods.

At one time I believe there was an "unwritten rule" that RC captains had to have at least one major championship on their resume. If that's true (and it's possible that it never was), it would disqualify Stricker (although I think he would be a good choice).

I have two other suggestions: Zach Johnson and Justin Leonard. Both are popular among their peers and have played in several Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups. Johnson has two majors and Leonard has a major and a Players Championship. Both are at a similar place in their careers as other recent captains -- still playing enough (or in Justin's case, doing television work) to be in touch with the tour but at a point at which they're unlikely to make the team as a player.

In past years there was some discussion and controversy about the omissions of Larry Nelson and Mark O'Meara as possible RC captains; maybe it's time to revisit those possibilities?

Your thoughts?

What's in the bag:
Driver: TaylorMade Rocketballz (non-adjustable), 10.5 degrees, stock graphite shaft R flex

Wedges: TaylorMade Black Oxide, 52, 56, and 60 degrees, graphite shafts
Putter: Rife Barbados w/SuperStroke grip
Ball: Bridgestone RXS

Does anybody think it's not going to be Stricker? After all, it's in Wisconsin and Stricker is to Wisconsin as cheese is to Wisconsin.

Stricker would be my first choice, but I won't be surprised if Mickelson, or Woods winds up with the job.

Too early for either of them.

If the powers that be cannot reach a consensus; I'd be happy to step in.  The players wouldn't catch any flak if things went pear-shaped...and I'm cheap.  All I'd want out of it is a couple rounds of golf, airfare, and a room.  And a hat...of course.

In der bag:
Cleveland Hi-Bore driver, Maltby 5 wood, Maltby hybrid, Maltby irons and wedges (23 to 50) Vokey 59/07, Cleveland Niblick (LH-42), and a Maltby mallet putter.                                                                                                                                                 "When the going gets tough...it's tough to get going."

ZJ will be captain one day but not yet. Still too young.

Speaking of Stricker, would he be the first ever US captain not to win a major? I know Euros have had some, but not sure about the Yanks.

Well hopefully Stricker has a more engaging personality among the players. Certainly has appeared to be real a nice guy throughout the years. But man what a bore.

Yep.

Hadn't thought of that, but now that you've said it, that makes perfect sense.

Yeah, I agree, but like him anyway. He is a scraper. An overachiever much in the mold of the second string RC Euros that seem to always eek out extra pound than you would expect them to. Captains don't seem to make a huge difference but maybe we can benefit from his underdog image.

Also, not that Stricker is a dino but I am feeling a younger more current player for next RC. Just a hunch.

I think Chris DeMarco would make a good captain.

I hadn't though of this, but DeMarco would be a great captain.  However I believe it will be Stricker and he is good choice too.

    • Hitting some good shots on my golf trip. It's good I can tell when I hit better shots the way I want to swing the ball versus when I use an older swing. Shockingly, the short game has been at worst, not harmful to my game. I am using similar feels to the full swing, in that I try to get my hands down. I've been nipping the ball clean off the turf.
    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!
    • Do you have examples of exceptional scores versus their established handicap indexes?
    • Day 539, April 23, 2024 Mirror work once again. When I get back to swings, I'll just do it A. LOT.
    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?
